Drivers will pay higher tolls to cross the SR 520 floating bridge starting Sunday.

Beginning on July 1, tolls will increase by 2.5 percent, amounting to an average of about $0.06 more per trip, according to Washington State Department of Transportation Director Craig Stone.

That's about $0.10 more during rush hours, and about $0.03 more during evening hours, Stone said.

The increase is the first of four planned tolling increases, that will likely happen each July with review from WSDOT.

"[We] decided to start with tolls lower and do four years of 2.5 percent increases rather than start higher," Stone said.

It's been six months since tolling started on 520. Tolls have shifted some drivers away from 520 onto alternate routes such as Interstate 90 and SR 522.

"Traffic on I-90 is up about 10 percent, but about 2-3 miles per hour slower on that route," said Stone. "People have started sorting out which routes they want to go on and things are starting to settle down."

About 80 percent of drivers who use 520 have a Good to Go pass.
