With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, law enforcement officers who belong to a DUI task force in Puget Sound will run extra patrols through Monday.

“St. Patrick’s Day tends to be a pretty heavy alcohol drinking holiday,” said Bellevue Police Officer Scott Montgomery.

Officer Montgomery was joined by other officers Friday night with a focus on the east side.

The holiday, he says, tends to bring out a younger crowd.

“Generally tend to make poorer decisions, meaning they want to get in their car and drive,” he said.

Signs of impaired driving include slow reaction time, swerving in and out of lanes, and forgetting to turn on a vehicle’s headlights.

“Our entire job is doing nothing but go out and enforce the DUI laws,” Officer Montgomery said.

According to Officer Montgomery, the holiday is second only to New Year’s Eve when it comes to DUI arrests.
