SEATTLE - In this economy, you don't hear many stories about companies extending or improving benefits to employees.

It might be what some staffers were thinking at Seattle-based Social Strata on Monday when the boss called all the employees together to make a big announcement.

Sandor Wallace says there was "an odd silence."

His colleague David Dreeze says he saw "eyes light up, and jaws drop" after what CEO Rosemary O'Neil had to tell them.

"We told our employees that we were going to have from now on unlimited paid leave," says O'Neil.

That's not a misprint: Unlimited Paid Leave.

"First, you could hear a pin drop. There was some surprise, they weren't sure we were serious at first," says O'Neill.

She says she was inspired to make the change after reading James Collins' book "Built to Last."

"We thought we want a company of leaders and a culture of discipline," says O'Neill, "When you treat people with respect, which is the essence of the policy, then they rise to the occasion. I really truly believe that."

The company specializes in building social networking sites and forum-based communication for other organizations, and its employees can already come in at different hours or, as Dreeze says, "It's nice not to punch a clock and know what your responsibilities are, come in and get 'em done."

O'Neill believes the policy will be "self-policing." She is not worried about people abusing it, but that if anyone does, they'll "weed themselves out.

That may be good news for anyone looking to work at the company, because right now, O'Neill says she's not hiring.

I got heckled for taking time out for a funeral when my Grandfather died, I would LOVE it if my employer gave us some slack. I mean, you can't please everyone, but you can try. Sometimes life happens, it would be nice not to have money loss on the brain when something difficult has taken over your personal life. Brief though it may be, the time and money is appreciated these days. I give kudos, but I agree that a follow up with this company would be ideal.

My bff used to be a teacher in a New York school district that adopted this philosophy. It was and is a raging success. Absenteeism is actually down from before the policy started. The only time they had a slight raise in absenteeism was when some of the staffers lost family in the World Trade Center attack. Certainly an understandable reason for the spike. I think it is so sad that some of the naysayers have so little faith in other human beings. My friend, who was near the trade center when it went down, said she will always be inspired by the goodness in people after that horrific event. BTW these naysayers must be a blast to work with.

At last! An employer that understands the concept of treating adults like adults(and they will behave that way.) Nicely done.

I think this is a good idea if you have good employees. My job has kinda evolved to this. Nobody really understands my job, and the hours that I need to work can be really strange sometimes. I go in and do my work and leave. I see other who are forced to work the 9 to 5 thing and realize how much time they waste. They have to be there certain hours no matter what. I end up working 40 to 50 hours per week, and I do three times the work that the 9 to 5ers do. If I have a day that people are not expecting me, and I am caught up, I simply do not go in. Of course, there are people without good work ethics that would abuse it. Well, if they are doing the job, you get rid of them and find someone who appreciates this kind of atmosphere.

Working for a company that buys into a lot of Jim Collins' philosophies, ideas like this do work for great companies. Look at Google for an example. Good employees will love this and honor it and I bet their productivity does go up.

People are posting negative posts because they are JEALOUS. Typical uneducated response to someone else's fortune. I hope this works out great for the company. When you treat your personnel as if they matter, you will generally get their best work. Those who will take advantage will be gone, to make room for those who will do right by a company trying to do right by them. Kudos to Social Strata!

Why so much opposition to this. I think it is a great idea. People love the policy and in order to not get it taken away they won't abuse it. Those that do would abuse it, would do so under any policy. I think it's great and that in case of emergencys I could take a few days off without worry.

This is a stupid gimmick. One which the company doesn't intend to honor.

"O'Neill believes the policy will be "self-policing." She is not worried about people abusing it" Chris Daniels! Please do a follow up on this in 6 months or a year!

Take a leave and come back to find your company no longer exists.
