WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. - Many British Columbia residents hoping to save some extra cash under a new Washington sales tax exemption got an unpleasant surprise Wednesday. If they shop in Washington they will have to pay the sales tax after all, despite going weeks thinking otherwise.
"Well that changes things", says Stephanie Greerson, a Vancouver, B.C resident planning a long weekend in the U.S.
A decision made by the Washington Department of Revenue meant B.C. residents would not have to pay the Washington state sales tax starting July 1st, because of changes to the B.C. tax system.
Wednesday, however, a Skagit County Judge issued a restraining order on the exemption, pleasing many state and county governments who argued the tax exemption would have had a negative impact on their budgets.
Additional legal arguments in the matter are scheduled to be heard July 9.
