It's a growing battle over math and science in Washington state schools. Businesses say they can't find enough workers who know basic math and science, and they are worried it's about to get worse.

Parents fill their kid's heads with religious nonsense, teach they that science is wrong, that evolution is a lie and then wonder why the kids perform poorly in science class. What a mystery....

The whole concept of "publik skool" today is to dumb America down so the corporatists can import low wage workers or send the jobs overseas. If you want to attract smarter workers try paying accordingly.

I can't say I'm surprised. A year ago, I had to "test" several candidates for a basic admin position to see if they could do the simplest things in Word, Outlook and Excel. One out of 7 had even heard of mail merge, and two knew how to change the margins. And these were adults.

Oh please, say it ain't so. Our public educators are performing so well these days. You know, they can't be fired - ever - unless they commit sodomy in the hallway at lunch time in front of 100 witnesses. Oh, I know, let's tax senior citizens out of their homes (via increased real estate taxes) so we can "enhance the teaching experience" of the no-account "educators" that proliferate the public school system. Now that the reasonable system of testing learned knowledge has been thrown overboard, thanks to a "feelgood" liberlism leadership, Washington State can settle back into graduating 9th graders as if they have actually accomplished a 12th grade education. Does this portend any improvement in the concerns raised in the article? I guess if one can print , not SIGN (because one is not taught to write legibly), ones' name, you can be hired at MickyD's, BurgerKing, and the WalMart stocking crew. Is it any wonder that China will eventually consume this country?

We have the WASL to blame for most of this. We need to return to teaching the "basics" and stop forcing useless testing down the throats of our schools administrators, teachers and students.
