24-hour bars in Seattle? It could happen

SEATTLE - It's the toast of the Seattle bar scene right now - a proposal to allow bars in the city to remain open 24 hours a day.

Supporters say eliminating last call would mean less binging right before people hit the streets.

"Just before you leave a bar it's like, last call, let's get a few more drinks," said Michael Minnis, who was enjoying a lunchtime Bloody Mary at The 5 Point Cafe near the city's Belltown neighborhood.

In turn, supporters say there would be fewer problems for police because there would be fewer highly intoxicated people spilling out into the streets at 2 a.m. as they do now.

"It's a 'you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here' kind of a thing," said Michael Couet throwing back a midday Coors Light. "And of course, they all pile into the streets and it's mayhem."

At Seattle City Hall today, nightclub owners met with both the city attorney and representatives from the mayor's office. Both of those offices indicated they are open to the idea of 24-hour bars.

"In other cities where you can serve liquor 24 hours like London, or until 4 a.m. like New York and Chicago, those are lawful cities," said Crocodile Cafe co-owner David Meinert who attended the meeting. "We're not talking about chaos in Chicago every night."

But opponents don't want Seattle to be New York or Chicago, let alone New Orleans or Las Vegas.

"It'll be a 24-hour party," said Belltown resident Ariel Sanderson.

She likes to enjoy a drink at a neighborhood bar now and then, but worries that things would get out of hand in a neighborhood already dealing with serious drug and crime problems. In her mind, 24-hour drinking would inevitably lead to more noise, more garbage in the street, more drunks in the alleyways and more violence.

"Instead of having an influx of people on the streets between 2 and 3 in the morning, now we suddenly have all these people on the streets for maybe 5 or 6 hours with aggression, too much alcohol and there's a real public safety concern there as well," she said.

Supporters are working on a proposal that would package new noise ordinances, tougher disorderly conduct regulations and more to present to the city council. The council would then have to approve it and present it to the state liquor control board which would then consider a one-year pilot program for Seattle.

Supporters hope to have that ready within a year.

If it were 24 hours I think there would be less trouble, people wouldnt have a timeline to leave the bar (2 am currently) and have a reason to drive home. If the Taxi's are available or buses then we would be like any other city that has the same rules, pilot program.

and with that thought when comparing Seattle to London or New York one must take into account that those cities have exellent public transit systems and taxis. A higher percentage of its citizens ride instead of hopping into a vehicle.

It sounds fun But I can already see a bad morning commute become more horrific when a drunk driver is in the mix. Maybe it should be on Saturdays only.

I really can't afford to drink alcohol at all, it's not in the budget. I have to be places and operate machinery. I can't miss an opertunity because of a couple of drinks. If your out at 3:00 am drinking "more"... you got a problem, if your drunk, your going to hurt somebody... then what? this law is going to be great for emergency services. and the court system. by enabling people to drink that one more drink that puts them over the limit. may as well raise the speed limit to 90 mph! that will raise some money! Its a sick idea at the expence of human life.

as a bartender in the area i see this as half good idea, everynight i call last call and every runs to the bar and for the next ten minutes i mostly pour straight shots, then its clear out time so by 2 am everyone is out side the building, remember it takes about 20-40 minutes for anything to absorb into bloodstream so by now the last few shot just hit them and as much as i try to ask whos driving tonight and remind everyone police will be out dont drive we have taxi's, i know people still do,. I think its a good idea to stay open later just cut alcohol, let bars and nightclubs staya open few hours later so everyone can drink water, sweat and dance some off. later serving like hawaii they stop at 4am and dont close til 6 am. i know of 1 place in seattle that does that and its not a" place for everyone".. Please think this out fully talk to people that work the biz everynight ( police, bartenders, secerity, taxi drivers, denny employees ect) it would be good tips but i see trouble

If I were an owner of a bar or a tavern and I knew for sure this were to happen I would at a small cost to my customers provide a small room, a small bed, a small sink , and a very large toilet.

On the positive side... some of the street people will now have a place to go live... Negative side... Not good with drunks on the road 24-7. At least when the bar closes we all know to stay off the roads at 2 AM... so if your driving to work early in the morning.... now an unemployed drunk can run into you on their way home....

Part 2: The extended hours would also increase revenue in a variety of areas. The city would get more sales tax, The bars would need to hire more staff to cover the extra shifts. Taxis/Town Cars/Limos would be better able to make a living at night. 24 hour restaurants would have a better flow rather then be slammed with a room full of drunks at 2am. Thus more people would be willing to go out at night because more restaurants would go 24hours. As for Ariel, if you want quiet move to the burbs. It's ridiculous to move downtown and expect quiet. A busy city is a prosperous city. So many people work second shift it would be nice for them to be able to go out after work into a city that has some activity.

I honestly miss the "people will drink and drive more" argument. What an idiotic statement. If people are going to drive they are going to drink and drive regardless of the time the bar closes. Most people drinking and driving have a stash in the car anyway so it matters not what time the bar closed. If they are not going to drink and drive,,,, you get the idea. The fact that the bars would stay open 24 hours may in fact lower the DUI rate. Most bartenders do not make you leave the bar just because you've been "cut off", they simply will not serve you any more alcohol and most make an effort to get you to eat, hang out and sober you up.. But when the bar closes at 2am that guy that's been cut off that's trying to sober up has to leave with the rest of them even if he's still bombed, The bar hours aren't going to make any individual drink any more or less then they already do. People that want to drink after 2 have already been to the store and have the stock on hand somewhere.

CarlConstantine, you don't drink, so why weigh in with your holier-than-thou nonsense, you've never even been to a bar, so what do you know about any of this?

dont change the last call time but allow bars to stay open til 4am to allow people to sober up. if you are downing shots at 1:45 and then get kicked out of the bar at 2, what do people expect to happen?

Guess nwcn didn't like the language I used referring to protitutes and other criminals this idea would support. They sensored my preveous comment. I must have been to politically incorrect by calling them the names we all know them by. so sorry if i offended the low lifes that would prosper with 24 hour ready cusotmers available. The wonderful commerace that will take place after last call should really bring the quality of life we so despartly seek here in seattle and the greater western washington area. Brillaint idea council and bussiness owners of seattle. This will give the bars the leway to overserving their customers right up to dawn !

As a bartender, I disagree Ariel Sandersons' opinion. Primarily because it is the sole responsibility of the bartender (and bar) to not over serve the patrons. So as long as the establishment is doing their part to keep safety the number one prerogative it shouldn't be a problem. Furthermore, anyone over the age of 21 can go into a convenient or liquor store and get completely smashed no matter what time of day it is.

24 hour bars, 24 hour liquor sales who cares. I always felt the 2:00am - 6:00am ban on liquor sales was some kind of hold over from the 18th Amendment or some tea totaler woman's rights movement to make her husband come home at night. The Law in Washington State is .08 if you drive, that is all I care about. People want to go out on the town after seeing a play or attending a concert go right a head, live it up all night. Just don't drink & drive.

Not a bad idea. This may be the taxpayers last hope for some relief. Maybe if we drink all night it will help numb the pain of the governments hand in our pocket books while at the same time bringing in additional revenue for Olympia and the City of Seattle. Looks like a win-win.

Not everyone works 9-5. There are a lot of folks that just get off work at 2am. They are not allowed to go have a drink with friends after work.

I definitely like this idea. Where I come from, the city never sleeps. I love to find places to eat and have a drink if I am working late. This could really help commerce.

Sounds like a good idea to me! All you suburban residents that live 10 miles from the downtown Seattle bar scene, this doesn't effect you! People like the girl in the news story who lives in Belltown, but hates chaos, move somewhere else!

This is an excellent idea. However, posters here are missing the point. In the article there is this quote "24-hour drinking would inevitably lead to more noise, more garbage in the street, more drunks in the alleyways and more violence." This is actually not the case. In fact, realistically we can expect the problems mentioned to be lessened if bars are allowed to stay open longer. The problems mentioned are caused by an influx or drunk people having to stop drinking and leave the bars at 2AM. If the extended hours came into effect this problem would be reduced because it would lead to people leaving premises over a much larger range of time - instead of all leaving at once. To carlconstantine, clearly you don't understand this issue, but since you have never been to a bar before and presumably never will, this issue really does not affect you one way or the other! To phhey67 if you paid attention to article, you would see that this is not about encouraging people to drink more

I don't think that this idea will work. Wouldn't this create even more problems than we already have? I've never been to a bar before and can't understand why people would want to go to a bar... Isn't there a lot of people at bars that you wouldn't want to socialize with, especially when they have been drinking? I'm thinking that it would be safer for people to invite friends over to their houses... I don't drink at all an I'm just wondering about this.
