LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles couple who own an aviation industry business have donated $100,000 to keep an aviation mechanic school open for another year.

Los Angeles Unified School District board member Nury Martinez announced the donation by Si and Betty Robin on Tuesday. The couple run Sensor Systems Inc., an aircraft antenna manufacturer based in Chatsworth.

Si Robin says in a statement that he made the donation after learning that financial woes were putting the North Valley Occupational Center-Aviation Center on the verge of relocation or possible closure.

The Los Angeles Unified School District offers a two-year course to train aircraft mechanics in a hangar near Van Nuys Airport.

Martinez says the district is working to lower the $12,000 monthly rent at the hangar.
