Boeing inked a deal Thursday to sell 100 737-MAX aircraft to United Airlines.

The 737 model dates back to the 1960s, and is the most popular commercial passenger jet in service worldwide.

Boeing is betting that technology advances it is building into the newest model -- the MAX -- will ensure that airlines are ordering the jets well into this century.

The first MAX deliveries are planned for 2017.
