SEATTLE - It is the one leftover nobody wants - all that greasy, used cooking oil you end up with after creating a Thanksgiving feast. Well a Seattle company says they want it and they are making it easy for you to dump your oily problem on them.

General Biodiesel has installed 'Biofuel Banks' at nine sites around the area where you can take your grease, any day, any time of day, of dump it. They will use it to create biodiesel fuel that they sell to local business to fuel their fleets and other machinery.

"We take any kind of vegetable oils, anything you fry with," said Elisa La Cava, a Business Development Associate with General Biodiesel. "So if you're making turkey or chicken, just put it into a container and you can drop it off when you go grocery shopping."

By pulling in greasy deposits from residents and several area restaurants General Biodiesel says it can produce hundreds of thousands of gallons of the fuel.

Drop-off sites

Simply pour your oil into any one of thecollection tanks for recycling.  The tanks are available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week in the following locations:

Bellevue - Crossroads Golf: 15801 NE 15th Street

Burien - Municipal Parking Lot: 634 SW 151st Street

Georgetown / SODO
  • General Biodiesel: 6333 1st Ave South. Tank is located mid-way along the river side of the building by glass doors
  • Republic Services: 54 South Dawson Street

Madison Park - Bert’s Red Apple: 1801 41st Avenue East. Blue barrel is in alley behind store

Mercer Island - Presbyterian Church: 3605 84th Ave SE. Tank is located just inside the North Driveway

Olympia - Thurston County Hazardous Waste Division: 412 Lilly Road NE

Renton - Republic Services: 501 Monster Road SW

Sammamish - Safeway: 630 228th Avenue NE - Tank is located behind the store

Shoreline - Central Market: 15505 Westminster Way N. Tank is located to the right of the main front doors

Here's an idea... the company could give donors a biofuel credit to compensate them for bringing in their cooking oil. This rewards people for contributing and gives them an incentive to actually use the biofuel being created.

I have been home brewing my own biodiesel for years and they did me a favor by taking my hazardous glycerin off my hands when nobody else would help. Go General Bio ! xoxoxox Sally K.

A good solution to an otherwise messy problem of how to dispose of used cooking oil AND you will be helping to reduce polution. Sure, keep the oil and make your own biodiesel to fuel your own vehicles. However, most of us are not equipped to do that and want a more eco-friendly way to dispose of used cooking oil besides pouring it down the drain.

Are they anticipating the cleanup involved? People dumping old grease everywhere. The local rats are going to love these dump sites.

Since we have to PAY such a high price for oils from our local store....General Biodiesel should PAY YOU for what you bring in as it is part of recycling. They are a multi million dollar company raking in the money from the oils YOU bring in. As long as our fuel prices are breaking $3.50 a gallon You should put a hold on GIVING that oil away for free.
