PUYALLUP, Wash. – A woman was killed after being hit by an Amtrak train early Thursday morning.

It happened at about 2 a.m. near 26th Street NW and West Stewart Avenue.

No passengers were on board the train and no crew members were hurt. Service is back to normal.

It's not immediately clear whether this was a suicide.

A spokesman with Burlington Northern Santa Fe, which owns the tracks, says this is the 16th death involving a trespasser on their tracks this year. That's in addition to three deaths at railroad crossings.

The railroad can't stop someone intent on ending their life from stepping in front of moving train. This is a tragedy for everyone--the victim, her family and the train crew. Most grade crossing accidents involving motor vehicles are the result of distracted or negligent driving on the part of the automobile driver. Many drivers don't think of trains traveling at speeds of 70-80 miles per hour. Those lights, bells and cross arms are there for a reason. As for Amtrak, it's all we got if you don't want to fly or drive. And yes, their trains are frequently heavily booked, even the long hauls like Los Angeles and Chicago. I would suggest that anyone who complains about the cost of Amtrak take a look at the billions of tax dollars that go to airports, airlines, air traffic control and other indirect subsidies that keep our bankrupt airline industry flying. It's easy to take swipes at Amtrak. It's time the rest of the transportation industry got their share of the guff as well.

If people choose to end their life that way, I wish that they would not drag other people into it. The train crew was just doing their job and now they have to have this memory. Sad.

my nephew and his friend where both struck and killed by a train a few years back....the main problem with the train systems is their "silence is golden" policy. They will never fully disclose what happened just to save their souls. I feel bad for the enginer that was behind the train, yet the sad fact is I'm sure s/he will stand behind the silent curtain too.

I would love to use Amtrak if there's a direct/non-stop line between Seattle to Las Vegas. Unfortunately, there isn't.

That's funny, Morganthomas; I have a friend who wanted to go to California for the holidays via Amtrak and couldn't. All the seats were sold out, weeks in advance. Sucks more to be the victim, whose circumstances we don't know, and to be the people directly involved in the tragedy including any family and friends.

Obviously Morganthomas seems to talk about Amtrak like he actually knows something. I got news for everyone, he's clueless. Amtrak was moving a train to it's maintenance facility in Seattle. Amtrak does this at odd hours to not disrupt passenger or commuter services. That whythe train was empty, just one locomotive and two cars.""HELLO"". Morganthomas must not fly on planes or realize that the US has terrorist or enemies wanting to harm us. I'm sure if we didn't have TSA or Homeland Security, and there was a attack, he would then complain ""why didn't we have security or intelligence gathering"".You can't have it both ways. If you every read the history of Amtrak you would have realized that Amtrak was created by a Congressional Act based on Nation Security. Without competition like the Bus Lines and Amtrak, the airline industry would have the consumers by the throat , the only method for long distance travelers who dont drive. In case of war, trains move troops/supplies.

That's too bad. Amtraks are very quiet trains. Pretty scarey to be close to the tracks when one goes by unexpectedly. If the engineer didn't have a chance to sound the horn she may have never known what was about to happen.

Morganthomas -- After a quick scan of the Amtrak schedule, I found there is NO scheduled train running @ 2 AM. More than likely, the train was being repositioned for the start of the day.

When will people realize you can't beat a train through an intersection? I'm grateful no one but the person playing chicken with a speeding train was injured.

Sorry the woman was killed. Even more sorry there were no passengers on the train. Next to TSA and Homeland Security, Amtrack is the biggest waste of money there is.
