ISSAQUAH, Wash. --  A pedestrian walking her dog Sunday evening sustained life-threatening injuries when she was hit by a car.

Issaquah Police Cmdr. Scott Behrbaum said the woman is a 59-year-old Issaquah Highlands resident. They are not yet releasing her name.

The accident happened after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Park Drive Northeast and 15th Avenue Northeast in Issaquah.

Witnessses said a gray Mazda was turning left out of a residential area, heading downhill, when it hit the woman and her dog in the crosswalk.

"I heard a large crash, and so I turned around and I saw the lady, like, hit the ground," said Justin Watts, a teenager who was at a pool across the street. "I heard someone screaming 'Oh My God!'"

The dog was crushed to death under the tire, said witnesses, while the woman struck the windshield.  Witnesses said the man driving the Mazda immediately got out to help, and was performing CPR on the woman when paramedics arrived.

Because the fire station is just three blocks west of the incident, rescue crews were on scene almost immediately.

Dr. Doron Feinsilber said he was exercising across the street, and by the time he ran over, the woman was unconscious and not responding to paramedics.

"They were still in the middle of chest compressions, and she didn't look that stable," Feinsilber said. "I see people in the emergency room all the time, and she looked much worse than what I see."

Medics transported the woman to Harborview Medical Center, where she was said to be in serious condition this morning.

Sergeant Jeff Johnson said the woman had no ID on her and that made it hard to identify her initially.  He said the driver was very cooperative with the investigation.

Stomakflew I hope you read this. I was the girlfriend of the driver at the time of the incident. We are still in contact with each other and have obviously not forgotten this tragedy. I had been thinking about Susan A LOT lately, when I decided to search the accident. I think mainly because it was coming up on the anniversary of the incident. I was saddened to tears to read about Susan's passing. We had been getting updates here and there until Susan was moved out of ICU and then we heard nothing. Will you please pass onto Susan's family that we both are so very sorry for their loss, and for the accident as well. I too, drive by the accident scene everyday, there isn't a day that goes by when passing the scene where I don't think about July 25, 2010. Our hearts and prayers go out to Susan's family. I wish I would have seen this post earlier.

I regret to say that Susan peacefully past away Wed may 25th 2011, according to a family source. She simply stopped breathing and passed away less than a year after this horrible tragedy. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. This is the last posting.

Unofficial update on the victim. It doesn't look like she'll ever make any kind of a full recovery. Shes been conscious for a long time, but her ability to interact with anyone on a `normal` level is gone. This is a sad sad situation and a constant reminder that driving shouldn't ever be taken for granted. Life as we know it can be taken away in an instant. I drive by the intersection every morning and think of Susan. If anybody has an update on the driver of the car, please post, we'd like to know how hes doing. Our prayers are with everybody involved in this tragedy.

Unofficial update, victim is still unconscious and unaware of what has happened/happening. She still has brain swelling and they've done the surgery on her head and broken pelvis. Shes all bandaged up and in casts. Shes in pretty bad shape. Please keep praying...

Unofficial update on the victim is that she is still in ICU today she was in a coma for a while, but appears to responding to voice commands by squeezing her hand when prompted, which is showing improvement from a couple days ago. Shes has not opened her eyes or spoken. She does have some broken bones but they cant operate until she is fully stable which as of today she's not. The swelling has started to go down in her face. Keep praying, shes not out of the woods by any means. Also, regarding some statements made on this site, the intersection is very visible from all angles. The sun was in the drivers face at 7pm, i know i was there when the cops were taking the video/pics the next day at 7pm. The firestation doesn't shadow anything, whether that interfered with his vision I cant say and I really don't care, just passing along the facts.

Nobody is blaming the dog washingtonian. Your comment is useless. If the dog jumped out into the street, the corresponding assumption is that the owner jumped out into the street also thus breaking the law and causing the accident, no fault to the driver. Sorry, I didn't realize you needed that explained to you.

I live in Highlands and came out just moments after the accident occurred. I also know the Lady who was hit and our prayers are with her and family. As far as the driver, he had a lot of things going against him. This isn't a matter of speeding, and it does sound as if the dog was unleashed. I didnt see the dog having a leash. Also, the driver was turning during a time in the day when the sun was low on the horizon and was in the drivers eyes prior to the turn. Also the spot where the dog and Lady ran out was in complete shade and its extremely hard to see/avoid. The cops were at the scene well into the morning of the next day collecting evidence and surveying and returned the next day at the same time of the accident to collect photos&video of what it would have looked like from a drivers perspective. They have it handled and for now our prayers are with our friend in the ICU that she pulls through and everyone involved.

I am absolutely NOT placing blame on this pedestrian that Is why i specifically said that I was not trying to lessen the situation. This was an accident. To those of you who were not at the scene (Newlogin) and did not watch this unfold you can speculate all you want. You can say that he was driving recklessly, you can say he just disregarded the pedestrian, you can say he was speeding but when it comes down to it you don't know the facts. When it comes down to it there is a woman that sits in harborview with very serious injuries and two other people that will never forget that this day happened. You can't even begin to imagine the images we both keep seeing. The sad thing is THIS IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. And thank you juststoppingby

newlogin86- Actually he was not speeing I was right behind him at the stop sign coming out of Highlands at wynhaven. He made a 100% complete stop at this stop sign. I saw him with my own two eyes and I WATCHED her movements. I saw everything and won't forget it. You literally can not gain enough speed at the stop sign to the point this pedestrian was hit. There are NO skid marks in the road, not ONE which would have indicated he had been speeding in order to stop his car. Pedestrians do have the right away however, they also have to give drivers enough time to yield. It's a false truth that all pedestrians have the right away just because they are on foot. At my last calculation there were TWO lanes that run through intersection, one in each direction.

Again people it's called an accident! You have to think what if that was your mistake? That you didn't look left again? It doesn't matter if she was walking or running out into the crosswalk he did not see her! It was an accident! Of course if it would have happened to you other people would be saying the same thing about you. There was a hit and run the other day in Tacoma, guess what this guy could have hit her and drive off but no he stopped and helped her for as long as the paramedics got there! Everyone needs to stop blaming everyone for all the bad things that happen there are some innocent people in the world and accidents do happen!

Well Kayleesmommy, you nor I nor anybody will really ever know. She I doubt darted in front of him. Its most likely , she entered the crosswalk, he turned left after looking right and did not look left again. The problem is he should have seen her on the side of the road, and tried to predict her trajectory. That's how I drive, to anticipate the pedestrians, as they have right of way and do not have to stop at a crosswalk that is AT a stopsign. He may feel horribly but he was careless, and you blame the victim saying SHE darted out into traffic. I don't think so!

Cooperative or not, what was he doing? Oh I dont know! FLYING DOWN that road?? Everyone does! NOBODY I mean NOBODY goes the speed limit there. The Highlands drive is 35mph, most go 55 as its 6 lanes wide and looks like a freeway. Same with the off roads to the residential areas. They need speed bumps on it.

That’s where my daughter and I were nearly killed just a year ago. When the driver saw us in the crosswalk on 15th, he sped up and screamed, “don’t ******** cross the street when cars are coming!” I knew it was just a matter of time before someone was seriously injured or killed there. So here’s my two cents! To the insensitive, dangerous and entitled drivers who think just because they live in the Highlands, that laws and rules don’t apply to them. No one is as important as they are, and all the rest of us should just get out of their way. They’re raising their teenagers the same way, so another generation of entitled Americans is born! It’s a VERY dangerous place to walk! It’s up to our city officials, whom we pay with our tax dollars, to stop the speeding and dangerous driving in the Highlands! Signed, “Had it in the Highlands!”

First of all look at my name ARMYWIFE my husband is in the ARMY you usually don't find soldiers living in seattle or wynnhaven as you think this man lives, nice try, he isn't even married. Second, how come he wasn't ticketed or arrested by the police? Oh let me guess, because the police are part of the wynnhaven conspiracy theory? There are 5 protected crosswalks from the point you turn onto Federal up until you reach cafe Ladro. There are NONE after that. No protected crosswalks that run through the neighbor hoods, no protected crosswalks that run to Grand Ridge Elementary school and No protected crosswalks that run up into the Highlands. We need crosswalk signals, stop signs or pedestrian overpasses. We also need more of a police presence in this area to control the people that are actually speeding and that aren't actually yielding for pedestrians. I am not trying to lessen the situation, and pedestrians do have rights, to a certain point, but drivers ALSO have rights. For the records we are both employed, we don't drive fancy cars, we don't speed through the Highlands, we both have small children. I don't own a home in Issaquah because moving back home to Washington was a last minute choice. Our hearts are with the Lady that the accident occured with.

seattleseattle... I am actually his girlfriend. I AM the resident at highlands at Wynhaven, he is not. Not that it matters. He was not speeding, he was at a complete stop at the stop sign making a left hand turn. He was in the middle of his turn already out in the road when she darted into traffic. As a moral responsibility and because he is an extremly compasionate person he stopped and did the right thing, when so many other people would have just left. This was an honest accident and he feels horribly. He never meant for this to happen and would take it back in an instant. We both feel tremendously for this woman that was hit, her family and for her dog too. The affects of this accident will stay with both of us for a long time to come. I DID SEE THE ENTIRE ACCIDENT. The sad after math is that this finally got a police officer positioned up near the crosswalk as of yesterday afternoon. Even if my boyfriend had been speeding speed bumps wouldn't have helped the situation.

@seattleseattle Armywife is not the wife of the driver of the Vehicle that was involved in this tragic accident. He also is not a resident of Wynnhaven, he does, as others have stated, live in Seattle. He works, as does the young lady who is his friend who was in the vehicle behind him. I don't understand why people have to get on here and try to make nasty comments regarding information they clearly have no idea what they are talking about. The driver and his friend who was behind him, both are suffering emotionally and will live forever with guilt and grief over something they had no control over. For anyone who wants to be enlightened on the true law regarding pedestrians rights, please google WAC132E-16-040 and read number 2. You will find that Pedestrians also have responsibilities. If the dog was leashed, why was the leash found across the street in the opposite direction of travel? Let's have some compassion for this driver as well. Thank you.

Your arrogance and profanity is detestful. Want me to make the license plate # of the car public? It was there for several hours for everyone to take note. Wait, you know that already. So you understand before you and your husband kill more innocent civilians and talk rubbish against the old lady that is grieving the loss of her only one, I am a neighbor of hers. She used to come to the dog park with her dog regularly and everyone loved him. The lady is immensely kind-hearted. Her dog was on leash. Why can't you call 911 and get your story straight? Wait, you were right there. You saw it happen. You just need to make a demi-God of a murderer. It is sad and deeply disturbing to have people like you in our society. May God forgive you. Seattleseattle, your lack of intelligence and garbage you spew is ridiculous. The man is from seattle. I know him. Second, the dog was not leashed. Furthermore washington state law does state pedestrians have the right of way, however are required to leave enough "reaction time" for drivers. Apparently you don't possess the ability to see beyond your clouded, judgmental mind. He was at a complete stop in his fancy schmancy mazda 3 when he made a left turn and the pedestrian darted out to get the dog that she was not physically in control of. And to make sure you understand again, he lives in seattle. Hopefully it sinks in this time.

We have undercover cops all over and will have them for a while. @faceityourewrong - he IS a resident of Wynnhaven. I was there shortly after this happened. Some details have been deliberately kept out of this news. My suggestions are not for just that crosswalk and just this neighborhood. There are some pretty bad spots out here, just as bad and dangerous. If the trees weren't as tall, that intersection would be better. We've asked for a traffic light there just for that very reason. That intersection needs a traffic light.

Sounds like seattleseattle is changing his tune- because the driver certainly couldn't control A) the pedestrian darting out into traffic, B) the lack of speedbumps (which wouldn't have mattered since he wasn't speeding anyway, C) the trees, and D) the lack of a camera... (what good would that have done, proven how wrong seattleseattle is?) Might I add, the driver is not a resident of Wynnhaven. Face it pal, you're just wrong.

The dog was on leash. People from Wynnhaven do turn that way all the time. They have some grudge against the residents here because they can't afford the houses in this upscale neighborhood, they have a 7 year old lawsuit (they don't pay community fees though they use all the community resources) and the lawsuit is because Issaquah Highlands asked them rightfully to pay the dues. We need some speed bumps. We need to cut more trees. We need a camera right there. Wynnhaven needs to pay the dues. And yes, all throughout the Highlands, the traffic situation needs to change.

This was truly a horrible accident. I know the driver of the vehicle and he is totally devastated and has cooperated fully with the police, doing more than what is legally required. What many of you ignorant people obviously don't know is that this lady was walking her UNLEASHED dog who ran into the road and she darted in front of traffic to get the dog. Regardless of her being at fault, the driver feels horrible. Yes, prayers to her family but also to him. He could not have avoided what happened and before ignorant, ill informed people jump to conclusions you should know what you are talking about before you open your mouth. Because this lady chose to put her life on the line to go after an unleashed dog (which is illegal and breaks leash laws) this man will forever feel the guilt and relives the horror of hitting another human being with his vehicle, when he could not have avoided it. Thoughts and prayers to ALL involved, including the driver.

I'd love someone to post seattleseattle's personal information. The driver in question wasn't speeding, he wasn't "driving a BMW or Benz", and he's neither "rich" nor "busy". This is a tragic accident. I'm sure seattleseattle would be able to stop if someone RAN in front of their car. Why don't you let me know where you're driving, and we'll give it a try- I'll run in front of your car, you can do your best to slow down, we'll see if you stop to administer life saving CPR, and then I'll sue the pants off of you and we'll slander you to the ends of the earth. The driver is DEVASTATED. Don't think for a minute that he wouldn't take it back if he could. To backseat drive and Monday morning quarterback this situation is sickening. If you don't know what you're talking about and you have nothing positive to add, I suggest you shut it.

You know what you need to back off because it was a complete accident. Yes a lot of people drive really fast and reckless in the highlands but that was not the case for this accident. He was not driving fast, he was pulling out of the neighborhood right next to that crosswalk. Yes it is terrible what happened but that could have happened to anyone because the crosswalks in the highlands are horrible especially the ones on the roundabout. But my point is that if this would have happened to you you would have felt horrible and people would be saying the same thing about you. Accidents happen and if he would have been speeding or something yes but he wasn't so do talk about him like he is a crimal!

For this lady, my heart goes out to you. I will pray for your dog tonight. I would love it if someone could post your address so we could send you something. And I would love it if we could remember your dog in a special way. Too many people drive in Issaquah Highlands recklessly, more so if they dont have kids or dogs and are driving a BMW or Benz. I could care less if the driver helped her. He killed her dog and should get at least 5-10 years in jail. It's as bad as running over a baby. That dog is all she had. There's nothing blocking that crosswalk from that intersection - go check! Of course he has to help or else he gets a life sentence. As a highlands resident, I am infuriated. We have complained about this several times, and the HOA doesn't care. They have the "not my baby" syndrome. There are many spots with too many blocking trees and those need to be removed. The rich and busy people need to be given $1000 tickets. And I want to see that driver's name posted here please

its great that they were able to identify her and contact her family. no one should have to be in the hospital; in ICU and not have family near by. Its going to tragic that she will have to wakeup and be informed that her dog is dead. As stated by others I have seen many cars driving too fast throughout the Issaquah Highlands. Most of them have been driving very expensive status symbol vehicles.

I'm not getting into the details of the accident, we are obviously hoping that the lady that was injured makes a full recover. It was purely and accident. This is a very dangerous crosswalk. Marked with little white lines and no other protection which is oddly enough in a school zone. While interviewing with the police I watched another group of young kids come out of the apartment complex and just because there was a police car out front with tape they decided that they didn't have to look for traffic. We also heard on a few different occasions other people speeding up the hill last night as the cops were still doing their investigation. The person that was driving this car was NOT speeding. It's a very very tragic accident and our hearts go out to this lady and her family.

They were both pulling out of the neighborhood. That's it, that is all that happened. I don't know why everyone is trying to make up different stories. I live a couple blocks up from where this happened. I have seen many close calls at this crosswalk because people are driving to fast down the hill or not paying attention. I walk my dog in the same area everyday and never carry ID on me. (Now I am going to start carrying ID.) The intersection at Park and 15th is dangerous. The city should look into changing the intersection into a round-about or adding reflectors something to make it safer. My thoughts and prayers are with the woman and her family.

Any type of accident of this kind of nature is horrible and if you don't find it horrible then there is something seriously wrong with you and you better start looking at yourself. I just love the fact that they consider the Highlands a safe area for people to walk in. It is not a safe place and this needs to be addressed before someone does get killed! Issaquah Homeowers Association, Issaquah Police and the city need to handle this.

I understand what the article is stating, so please quite judging my ability to read. The information I have heard came from someone who helped at the scene. Not saying it has anymore truth then this article, everybody knows how great the game of telephone can be. Just bringing it to the table.

From what I've heard this woman may have been trying to chase after her dog that had gotten loose. Under those circumstances it could have been just a horrible accident. I can't help but feel terrible for the woman, her family, the driver, and those who came to her aid. My prayers and positive thoughts will include all of them.

This should be a major wake up for the homeowners up in the Highlands! The good thing that did happen was that this person who hit her, did stop and give her medical attention. I command this person for that. We me being a homeowner up in the Issaquah Highlands, I am shocked and amazed that something like this has not all ready happen! The homeowners that lived up that are so much in a hurry that they would soon run you over instead of letting you across a X-walk or worst yet blow there horns at you because you trying to cross the street. I hope and pray that the woman that was hit will be able to make it and prayers to her family also. Maybe it is time that the Issaquah Police and the City Officials start taking notice before someone else get hit or God forbid gets killed....

This very thing is why I carry RescueVoice. I can update my information as many times a day as I want to, I can even say where I am walking my dog at. It's endorsed by the Firefighters, King County Paramedics and Washington State Fire Chiefs. I just don't want my family to hear about it from King5 the next day. rescuevoice.com

Seems the losers of this comment section did not or have not contacted the mayor of Issaquah to ask your questions you are asking.. Get some guts.. Any moron that hits someone in X walk is brain dead.

Jolly, Editors have updated the article (even changing the Headline). Reports last night were that she did not have any ID and she was Unconscious. They did not have her name and no way to contact her family. Good to know that they finally have that information and that they have updated the article to let us know. commentliberterius, Very good use of sarcasm. At least I hope it is sarcasm.

The article says it made her difficult to identify INITIALLY and that they are NOT YET RELEASING HER NAME, meaning that they have it, but they are just not telling the public yet.

This story is a good reminder to us all that it only takes a moment of inattention to have a real serious accident when driving. As tragic as it is I am relieved to read that the driver stayed on scene and attempted to help as much as possible: we hear of too many hit and run accidents.

As previously stated please provide description of woman and her dog. I live in the area and was walking my own dog and saw the police and tape. I even saw the reporter standing around talking to the camera man and a couple of young teens. With all the time he spent there before his standup for the 11:00 pm broadcast he should have collected the description and insisted the editor include it in the print version. If the person has been identified the editor needs to include it in an update to this article. News organizations and reports are not just there to fill in space between commercials. They are supposed to help others. That includes giving descriptions about victims without ID.

Does anyone have any information on the type of dog she was walking? I might recognize the person based on the dog's description.

I live on Park Drive and know from experience that this happens to be a dangerous cross walk. People drive too fast going down hill and there is a curve right before the cross walk area. My thoughts and prayers are with all concerned.

So sad to hear. Our prayers our with her. The only thing I will say is this is why you should ALWAYS have your ID on you when you go out. And if not your ID, something that can give a clue to who you are, even your cell phone will help ID you.

What a terrible accident. Good for the driver doing the right thing and owning his mistake. That poor woman... May she recover fully and quickly.

Wow...Owen Lei....next time the police ask the media's help in identifying an unknown person, you might publish a little more information than "a woman with a dog"! Approx. age, hair color, race (it's ok, to state whether black, white, hispanic, asian - we come in all different colors you know), build, weight, etc. What an incredibly ill-written piece of journalism. Pity too that your editor didn't notice the gaping hole in your story.

My husband, dog and I drove past this on our way to the Bark Park in the Issaquah Highlands. Not knowing on our way up the hill what had happened, we assumed a fender bender (I saw the sheet behind one of the back wheels but I guess it didn't register at the time). After an hour and a half later coming down the hill, the police, yellow tape and car had not been moved. We stopped as we were being rerouted through another neighborhood what had happened. The police told us. We were so upset thinking about that poor woman and her dog. Then we realized it was the dog under the sheet. I pray the woman survives. Maybe they could scan the dog for a chip to identify the woman - the owner's name would show up. Guess dog had no tags... Our thoughts and prayers go out to this woman and her family.
