The Washington State Patrol is investigating a double fatal crash that happened just after midnight in Whatcom County on New Year’s Eve. The crash took place on State Route 539, also known as Guide Meridian, north of Bellingham near Smith Road.

Witnesses have said that the 23-year-old male driving a Chevy Tahoe was driving erratically and at high speeds going northbound on SR 539. The Tahoe crossed the centerline and collided with a Honda Civic driven by a 20-year-old man. Both drivers died due to injuries they received.

Alcohol was smelled on the causing driver and may be a factor in the crash. Neither vehicle had passengers. SR 539 was closed during the investigation but reopened around 4:40a.m.
