SEATTLE - Election returns Wednesday showed school levies passing across the state, as many Washington voters proved willing to tax themselves to pay for education, even in hard times.

Rep. Ross Hunter, D-Medina, said voter approval of school operations levies shows people care about their local public schools and worry that budget cuts in Olympia are damaging them.

Across the state, 165 school districts asked voters to approve a total of $4.6 billion in maintenance and operation levies on Tuesday. Eleven districts had bond issues on the ballot, four districts asked for transportation funds, and another 32 districts asked voters to approve $835 million in capital levies.

Nearly all maintenance and operation levies appeared to be passing, but some districts seeking approval to sell bonds or approval for levies to construct new buildings were unsure of passage. The election results will be certified Feb. 24.

Seattle voters appear to have approved both a $442.7 million operations levy and a $270 million, six-year capital levy.

Approval of the two levies with about 71 percent of the vote was just what the state's largest district needed to hear, Seattle schools Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson said.

"We need the support and collaboration of our entire community to reach the goal we have for our students -- that they graduate from high school ready for college, careers and life," she said. "The consistent strong approval for Seattle levies is just one of the many ways in which our community shows that support."

Meanwhile, a bond measure in the Lake Washington School District was failing in early returns. The bond would pay to convert the district's high schools from three-year to four-year institutions to ease overcrowding in other schools.

A construction bond in Marysville also was failing, and a technology levy in Federal Way could go either way.

At least one school operations levy was heading toward failure: Of the 25 votes counted in the Selah School District election by Wednesday afternoon, 12 were for and 13 against. Some counties had not released vote counts in some levy elections as of Wednesday afternoon.

Rep. Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis, said the elections were a testament to the various districts and how hard they worked.

"I think they see the state failing in meeting the needs of education and they feel like they need to step in at a local level to do it," he said.

Lisa Macfarlane of school reform advocacy group League of Education Voters told KPLU radio that the results of the school levy elections indicate the Legislature should give voters a chance to approve a tax package to prevent further cuts to education.

"Voters want their schools invested in. They want quality public schools. State lawmakers should hear a message that our public schools are our future," Macfarlane said.

Sen. Mike Zarelli, R-Ridgefield, does not believe the successful levy elections mean voters are ready to pay more taxes for schools.

"I don't think you can draw one conclusion from another," Zarelli said. "During good and bad times, school levies have been important to people."

He said this is especially true when the state reduces its contribution to public schools.

Do you ever wonder if the these elections are fixed? I spoke with over 75 people about the election and not one was voting yes?? so how do these levies pass, if the government did a poll and asked 75 people how they would vote and came back no, then they would report that the majority did not want this to pass. THIS IS FIXED, pretty sure of that, probably all the no ballots are just thrown away, can't trust the government!!

I can only conclude the "ignorants" that are ranting and raving are the same ones who did poorly in school (since they don't understand what a levy vote is obviously) which do cost us more in time and money because of their behavior and lack of education.

Holding this election was a huge waste of taxpayer money. These levy votes should have been included on the ballot 3 months ago in November. Instead, we pay for this unnecessary separate election just for levies. What a waste of money that could have gone to their precious schools.

Ya, lets stop passing levies and make the state foot the bill. Oh, that's right, we pay those taxes too. The difference is that we have a little control of how the levies are spent locally. No control of state funds. Relying on the state for all the cash will be a fiasco like the money coming to the states from the fed for transportation. No money if you don't make the drinking age 21, have a mandatory seatbelt law, meet every foolish requirement to get the cash and tell us how every penny is to be spent. There will be laws requiring every kid access to a football program, even though there is not a team within 40 miles. So thousands will be spent to bus 3 kids to a school wioth football. Schools that haven't seen a minority student in 30 years will be required to have a diversity rep on the staff. The one room school in the mountains with 2 students will be required to have a nurse on the staff. Stupid stuff that needs to be controlled locally, not by the state.

I don't want to pay any more taxes then I have to just like most of the comments on here seam to suggest, but not funding education is not an option unless you want the US to become a thread world country. When people stop spending money or reduce the amount of money there spending the state losses money they use to fund schools, roads, extra.

The Snoqualmie Valley levy and the KC Library levies were to renew expiring levies, so not much changes. The KC Library levy went up by about .07 cents/$1,000. The school levies were actually less than the prior amount. I agree that most of us can't afford more taxes. Being unemployed myself I agree that we continue to add more cost to the citizen. Write your representative to tell them how you feel. We should be more worried about what our Governor (Miss No New Taxes) is attempting to do - State Income Tax. That will be far worse.

When do you suppose the next campaign will start for "there's not enough money" ? Once again, this is pathetic.

relax jaybee, its not going to cost you anymore than what you've been paying. And if they would have failed, it wouldn't have put more money in your pocket.

How on earth do these school levies keep passing? I don't think I'm in the minority when I say I barely make ends meet most months -- the other months I don't make ends meet. I have no extra money for more taxes. Is there a money tree somewhere in Washington State that I don't know about? I've lived in three states on the west coast, and this is the only state that passes tax hikes like they won't be paying the bill. For once, let's hold the State responsible for spending instead of us OFFERING to give them more money. For starters, let's repeal that insane public records act that lets attorneys, criminals (prisoners!), and the public in general make a living off requesting public records they don't want and/or need, but then suing and receiving thousands and thousands of dollars for not receiving a few documents that wouldn't change anybody's life. (Totaling millions of dollars (the budget deficit) for all the people who take advantage of this new-age welfare system.)
