I wonder if she had been a white or any other non-black female, would this have happened at all where the police tried to issue a citation to them for jaywalking. It seems he was itching for a confrontation. If it were me, I think I would have reacted the same way the girl did because I don't think I would believe that denying a citation for jaywalking would lead to me being arrested. And I'm sure her anger got the best of her because she was thinking the same exact thing I'm stating here. Not only that, but also thinking 'I'm and upstanding citizen and you want to cite me for jaywalking and now arrest me? Are you out your freakin mind!' Not only that, whatever happened to the guy that was supposedly stopped earlier by the same police officer for jaywalking and then released so that he could stop the black group for jaywalking? Was the white guy his ploy in this case so if they asked was it racism he could easily say, 'no, I stopped a white guy earlier' who didn't a citation.

They are armed with a variety of lethal and non-lethal weapons. They can call down a whole team of additional officers if needed. They are trained in close quarter combat. They are to uphold the "proud tradition" of protecting the public that they always cash in on when it is time for a funeral or parade. Fortunately for them, we give them credit for doing this even in the face of these repeated assaults against those they are charged to serve.

I am sorry, but who in the heck would ever shove a cop? I am white and if my daughter ever did that to an officer of the law I would expect her to be tased or punched or whatever it took to restrain her. But here’s the thing, my daughter would never do something like that because she was brought up to respect the people who choose to serve and protect us. With all that has happened in the police force lately, all the killings and attacks, these officers have to be in heightened alert mode, and frankly, scared to death. I don't care how much he is trained to handle things correctly, he is still a human being just like us, and eventually fight or flight is going to kick in just like with any of us that feel threatened. You ask…Did he really think a 17 year old was girl was going to hurt him? Check out the news, 13 and 16 year olds kill people. He had too many people too close to his gun. Wake up people!

What if that was our child, and we were to punch them in the face, we would be arrested for domestic violence, or worse child abuse... the girl he punched was only 17, and she was a GIRL.... so it's ok for husbands to punch their wives because they get into an arguement? or boys to hit girls? does anybody see what I'm saying here? it doesn't have anything to do with, they deserve it they were THUGS, what the heck is wrong with you people? what if they were just scared? thier only in their teens, answer this. if you were seventeen and crossed a street, and you felt as if you were being attacked by the police what would you do, with everything that's going on lately if something like that was to happen to me I don't think I could trust the police to do the right thing, I would probably be scared, and I'm a grown women. what if this was to happen to your child what would you do? what would you say? she deserved it? doubtful

It just seems that the teens today are terribly disrespectful to their elders, peer and law enforcement. I don't think it always has to do with the parents. Many parents teach their children respect and how to act. After a certain age, children will make their own way regardless of what they have been taught. Many choose the wrong direction and many choose the right direction. The ones that choose the hard road seem to get the most attention which brings more children to that side.

It's funny how virtually all of the comments on this site are in support of the officer's actions. This is the topic of discussion this morning at my work and everyone here is critical of "The Punch". Add it to the list of betrayals from the past month or so: Killing the DUI in Everett, shooting the retreating, unarmed, mentally ill man in Portland, Tazing a 16 year old to death (OSP), these are all recent and I'm not even looking. Whether or not you drones like it, the police are losing the moral authority to enforce the laws.

Surprised by how these "thug teens" (as some of you refer to them) responded to the police officer? Someone said "blame the parents". After thinking about this for a while I was wondering what kind of opinion these teens have of their police force and why? Did you know that your neighborhood police force may be dramatically different from the one these girls deal with on a day to day basis? Do you have a patrol car driving by asking you what you are still doing on a sidewalk after you have only been there a few minutes in broad daylight? Asking you for your ID? Questioning you? Alot of what goes on in these nighborhoods would not fly in yours. So maybe these girls have just had enough. Maybe they have been taught that to get respect you give it, and as of yet have not gotten any respect from their police force. I cannot get one thought out of my head... The woman was out of line to attempt to touch the offcer, let alone push him. Glad its on tape, now the evidence shows police attempting to subdue a suspect and situation calmly, while the suspect was resiting then he is attacked by another woman. They both should be arrested and charged. Jay walking, a busy busy road, and a over pass just feet away? Had they been hit by a car then what?, They have a safe place to walk over a busy road built by the city and then dont use it. Then are upset for being detained for J-walking?

My opinion is this(as a black woman) and a human being. Every individual should know not to interfere with police business because you can get hurt. The Police take their frustrations out on there job. I'm sure the job takes a mental toll. Someone could have been shot by a cop who just can't take it anymore. They also teach them that they (the police officer) are the person they need to keep safe at all times. But a well trained cop that has respect for the full aspect of his/her job knows how to do it well and be safe. Which methods to use and when. I hope Seattle just doesn't sweep this under the rug. That video is- what we call in Chi - THE MONEY SHOT. There is always one lawyer who will take your case. If the unfortunate circumstance should ever come that a cop has used brute force against me unnecessarily I will say with every blow, Thank You and tell your children I said Thank You too. Black people if Seattle is mistreated you and making you feel unwanted - Leave.

But no, disrespecting young ladies did not want to accept the authority of the police in this matter, then resisted arrest. This went from a $100 citation at worst to possible felony charges. With a felony on your record, you won't even be able to ask "would you like fries with that" for at least 7 years. Don't worry though, the state will give you money for popping a few welfare kids out. And the cycle of stupid continues.

My comment isn’t going to address who was right or wrong. My father was a police officer in Western Washington for 26 years. For 26 years, I’ve heard all the stories of all the idiots and disrespectful people. And all the while, I look at his personnel file that is 4 inches thick for the commendations, and awards he was given for his service to the community. People forget that. These people aren’t doing this for just a paycheck. They willingly put their life on the line every day for us. They do it to try and make our community a safe place for EVERYONE to live. They are the 1st there when there’s a shooting, a rape, a theft, a car accident. They are human. They do the best they can with the training and information that they are given. Most of the time, they do it right. The job is dangerous no matter where you live. As a society, we should appreciate & respect them for their service for all of the officers and firefighters that do it right every day.

This is not a race issue, this is an issue of BAD parenting. These girls probably were allowed to push and tantrum their way with their parents from the time they were babies. I have several family members in law enforcement, and every day I live in fear of situations like this. They put their life on the line for us. And often some idiot, who has no upbringing, and think they are invincible does something stupid, which puts everyone else in danger. I have been a supporter of King 5 for years, but have to agree, this was pretty slanted and inflammatory coverage. I'm really diappointed.

An Officer, who job is to keep the peace and make sure all are served and protected, including four girls who could of caused an accident, for crossing the street, while traffic is heavy. Worse they got would of been simply a citation from the Officer. But because of their Diverse-Challenged view, they resisted the Officer and physically confronted the Officer. So what the Officer did, had every right to punch the 17 year old Girl to simply stopping her for interfering with the Officer's Duty. She should be luckly for just a punch in the face. She could of been Maced, Tasered, or worse, Shot. As for the Officer, did an excellent job at the time and condition he was facing. Holding every restraint to keep the peace. This situation could of gotten worse, if it was not of this cool headed Officer.

I would have punched her too... In the last 2 months, I have seen SPD write tickets to jaywalkers in the downtown area, one was a white woman, one an Asian business woman, and the other was a white male, I have little doubt that this was racial profiling in any way shape or form.

I am really upset about your use of our public resource! Instead of educating, you hype. You should have used that tape to point out that under no circumstance do you touch an officer without his permission. And most certainly you do not push, shove or attack a police officer. We as a public have charged the police department with enforcing law and order. When they do their job, ( and do it right or wrong in your eyes ) you must do exactly as you are asked by the officer. If there is an issue of right or wrong, you can always bring that issue to the department and you will be heard. You cannot, and you may not, fight with the officer. I have driven down the street many a time when a group of African American youths, children, teenagers, who are 6'2" and 200 # and slowly stroll across the street against a red light and stare down the drivers with that AAAA (angry african american attitude) daring you to honk or say anything. Now the news media is outraged that a teen girl who probably outweighed the officer who was overwhelmed at the scene trying to make an arrest using the least amount of force. The "child" who was as tall and weighed as much as the officer was interfering and assaulted the officer. What would these so called yellow journalism reporters have done. Ingored the jaywalkers and their AAAA as they delayed their travel. I am sure the reporters if taken in a car can accurately tell anyone's age by just looking at them. And always allow any AAAA to break the law or else some ignorant reporter will sensationalize a story.

This was not a SPD Officer hitting some defenseless person. This was a SPD Officer taking back control of a situation that was quickly getting out of hand. He was defending himself from an assault while trying to deal with another person resiting arrest. This could have become a very dangerous situation for the officer. I consider throwing a punch a very mild way of getting thing under control compared to what could have been done, especially it thing escalated more. If the 2 women would have treated the officer with some respect for doing his job,, they may had gotten only a warning and a ticket at most. Now things are much worse for them. That is assuming this was not done to provoke to officer into do something to get on film.

I got stopped for jay-walking a couple of months ago. I got talked to about it, and expected to get a ticket, but he let me go with a warning. The same thing probably would have happened to those two if they were nice and just accepted that they made a mistake. The thought of arguing or fighting an officer of the law has never crossed my mind, and I have met some real A.... not so nice officers too. I don't know why we go to such extremes to protect stupid people. Sometimes I wish the human race would be thrust back into the food chain to cull the herd.

Let's hope the girls learn from this experience and that they don't get away with the "race card" issue. As much as some of you think that jaywalking is not an issue, as someone else beat me to it, they would be calling foul if the officer chose to ignore it and they got hit. There are usually very valid reasons for laws, and this for the safety of all. Also, I've been stopped for jaywalking, I stopped when the officer asked me to, I listened respectfully and I didn't get ticketed. Goes to show that cooperation is the best policy.

First of all... why the heck would you rush a police officer? Thats just stupid. Just because you're a pedestrian, doesn't give you the right of way to the middle of the street. Those girls were stupid to get mad for doing something they aren't supposed to. And then to start argueing with the cop and pushing him. Hes by himself. If that were me, I'd be punching someone in the face too. I don't blame him. This ain't a race thing. He was just doing his job. I keep hearing a lot of stuff about racial controversies with cpos ever since those cops a couple months back mistreated that robbery suspect. That was wrong. But not every cop out there is racist. I just hope people are smart enough to know that its not a race thing and mabe next time people will think twice about how they approach a cop whos telling you to follow the rules. The rules aint there to just annoy us, they are there to help keep everyone safe. These girls deserve what they got. Kutos to the cop!

All these young women had to do was follow the lawful instructions of the officer. Instead they mad the choice to escalate this simple incident into much more than it needed to be. For those of you that are quick to criticize the officers actions, you might consider how dangerous if is for an officer to remain in close physical combat with a suspect, and risk loosing control of his firearm. If you have a short memory, in 2002 the King County Sheriff's Office lost Deputy Richard Herzog in just that type of situation. I thought if interesting that the only comments from the crowd were directed against the officer, how must that have made the office feel, I'm guessing even more uneasy. The bottom line is these girls jaywalked at a very dangerous confluence of streets, and are lucky they didn't get hit by a car. That aside you don't get to choose when and if your going to obey the lawful orders of a police officer, if you think they are out of line do as instructed and make complaint OPA.

Clearly, these women provoked this response. I support our Officers and appreciate the risks they take for our safety! It’s a shame we don’t see more positive stories. These are no doubt high school students acting like high school students. They seem to have respect for no one! That said, this is a very dangerous street to jaywalk on and people do it all the time. The reason - extremely poor bus service in this area! If you miss the bus here you are going to be waiting anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour for the next one. I don't excuse these young people, nor do I think they need to be shot (as some one suggested) for this stupid behavior.

I live in Wales, but visit your city often. The following should be in our minds with these young girls: 1) They resisted arrest 2) They were lashing out 3) The second girl interfered, whilst the SPD officer was trying to deal with a tricky situation. The officer would have felt very much under attack. 4) Two people were in effect assaulting a police officer. 5) The 'crowd' that gathered were no help to the officer, in that he had to be seen to perform his duties or let these girls have their way. They should be grateful that they were not shot dead on the spot. I hope that the officer does not face any hearings. If any person attacked an officer here, for whatsoever reason, then the same treatment would be justified. This is a non story - Get real King 5, support your officers.

For those who think this was wrong or that the officer was not following SPD policy. Maybe you should step back and shut your mouth. The officer’s actions were inline with policy and training. If you don’t know what they are, maybe you should not speak. Also let us all not forget that it still has not been one year since 5 officers in western wa. Were shot and killed on duty for no reason. Wow, this is so way blown out of proportion. The two girls were resisting arrest and fighting with the officer because he tried to do his job. This video is very clear about that fact. The girl who got punched got punched because she was trying to interfere with the officer. He was alone against multiple resisting offenders and did the right thing. If those people who think he shouldn't have hit her are going to cry about it, how about putting yourself in the place of the officer doing his job and see how you would react if two of more people were fighting you because you are trying to do your job. The girl is lucky he did not do worse. But she certainly got what she deserved.

After being pushed a couple times, the officer grabbed and lowered the woman's lead forearm. At that time, the woman wasn't fighting anymore. Then, the classic right cross was thrown to her face. It happened so quick only trained martial artists can spot something like this, but, in a strict sense, the woman is at fault. You should never obstruct or assault a police officer. If your children don't know this common sense, then teach them.

Those situations get out of hand literally in a matter of seconds. My siblings and I were raised in the city and all came through the Seattle public school system. I hope the schools are still fostering a culture of respect for our military and civil servants as they did when we went through. It's a shame to see such disrespect for law enforcement. Men and women who actually risk their lives to protect others, keep order and enforce laws for us. Mobs can get incredibly out of control and dangerous quickly. My brother was arresting a prostitute and barely got her into the vice cruiser before a big group of people made it to him from across the street. If they had got there first, that story could easily have a different ending. I am glad these girls were not seriously injured but the officer's quick action allowed him to gain back some control before it may have become unmanageable. Truthdoctor - First off, if they were white, they wouldnt have gotten a citation for jaywalking in the first place. Second, if they were white, the cop would not have hit her. Third, the police have several options before physical force is used, he did not use any of those options. Forth, Jaywalking in Seattle is something that happens at every intersection in the city. When a police officier goes into a predominantly black neighborhood and issues tickets for a minor violation, that can be conscrewed as harrassment when compared to the amount of jaywalking that happens in the city "white areas",. I would wonder how many other tickets did this officer issue and to who? Yes, the bottom line is dont get into a physical altercation with police. Yes, everyone must follow the law and pay the consequences of not doing so. At the same time, the police need to be equal in their enforcement of the law.

The two young ladies (out of context) had no business instigating any type of contact that police officer. I saw an officer in a very tenuous situation that felt he was in danger and used the proper force. If the african community comes against this officer - they are the racist!

What are these girls thinking picking a cat fight with a police officer?! That being said, the officer had that brief pause after the girl pushed him. He could have told her she was under arrest and arrested her. He announced nothing. He didn't have to turn the situation into a bar room brawl. The girls were interfering and resisting. He went a bit over the top in punching her but she's lucky he didn't taser her.

One officer facing at least two combative people amidst a crowd of potentially volatile on-lookers is now presented as an officer assaulting someone. actually moosegirl the girl was a juvenile but that is besides the point. honestly i probably would have reacted the same way. he was trying to control one girl and then all of a sudden 2 girls are basically attacking him. He made a judgment call and it obviously worked. this could have been solved by just staying calm and talking to the officer like a human being and not freaking out. i mean they were just jaywalking they probably wouldn't have even got a ticket if they would have just shut the hell up for 2 minutes and not flew off the handle like they did.

clearly she was assaulting a police officer... but honestly... considering the scrutiny Seattle PD is under... the officers need to be smarter than this.. Now I will caveat this by saying that I wasn't there, and brief video pieces often fail to convey context... but in my opinion, the punch appears not to have been a necessary part of subduing this woman, and regardless of how "deserved" it may or may not have been, will merely stir the fervor of those already wearing the mantle of hatred or distrust for the police.

King5 shame on you for the way you are spinning this story! Your first video clip should show the entire video, not just the girl getting what she deserved! There is no reason for those girls to even be involved, if you read the story the officer was stopping a man for jay walking! If they would have kept their mouth shut and moved on this officer could have done his job and moved on. I have no training when it comes to this, but it looks to me like the officer used good tactic to gain quick control once the second girl got involved, she put her hands on him, he punches her shocking her enough that he can quickly gain control and get her handcuffed and out of his way. I support all law enforcement!

Gosh there are a few mean people commenting here. When I was young I knew that the police were there to protect and to help me. That is what I was taught. I was also taught to treat every person with respect, especially in the carrying-out of their job, as I would like to be treated. That being said, who educated these children and told them it was fine to resist a police officer? What kind of moral laxness gave birth to this type of disrespect in these children? This is what makes this incident sad to me. Both of the little buggers got what they deserved: commit the crime, do the time. My support is totally behind the police officer. I respect him for having restraint. I would have tazed her just because she dared. I have lived through many Seattle Police experiences. King 5 should not be building a case that this is related to any other incident unless you have additional facts. It's ridiculous that the news would try to paint the SPD in a negative light when they are simply doing their job. Whatever this woman's issue with the officer, she completely had the option to speak to him or contest his ticket/fine at a later date rather then act like some rabid animal. I would've punched her too. If we criminalize the SPD's actions then soon they will not touch anyone, talk to anyone, or do anything and then what are we paying taxes for and exactly how are they expected to ENFORCE the law. They aren't paid to reiterate it - they are the police FORCE. My only real issue with this is that the SPD are ALWAYS more concerned over stupid victimless crimes like jay-walking when they should focus on rounding up half the psychos that meander downtown harassing everyone at all hours of the day now. Or enforce the laws that do affect others such as the smoking ban near public entrances and bus stops. It's ridiculous.

The presentation on tonight broadcast was meant to inflame the audience. This was a case of two people assaulting a police officer. He defended himself. The one that got punched is lucky that's all she received. It was fairly clear from the WHOLE video that he was trying to deal with the situation. They were resisting and not complying. King5 spun this all wrong instead of showing the whole video first you fan the flames and only at the end tone it down. Shame on you, on the two women, and especially on the one with the video camera. Nobody can take that kind of scrutiny when you are editing for effect. The police have to deal all kinds of bad situations. Many start out at benign and can quickly escalate into a dead officer. They must be ready to react immediately and second guessing that split second on the third replay from the safety of your sofa just isn't fair.

The officer obviously didn't WANT to punch anyone and just wanted to do what we have law enforcement here (trying) to do in the first place, until the other gal jumps in and as you can tell from the video, broke her away from the officer. At that point she becomes a criminal herself by obstructing justice and our officer has to take control. I wouldn't feel 'sorry' for her. In fact I believe the officer ended up being overly lenient if all she got was a J-walking ticket.

This officer did exactly as they are trained. When agression starts, you stop it by strong enforcement. The girl clearly was going beyond her bounds in her involvement. She refused to communicate things properly and made it a physical debate. The man recording the event is uneducated to what an officer must do to keep the peace. Don't attack an officer and you wont get punched. Attack in any fasion and the officer will respond per their training.

They used to like the job but now that so many people disrespect them and don't support them they are not doing their job anywhere near what they used to. Morale is do far down amoung cops it is scary. Many don't like coming to work and they no longer like serving the public. In fact they have come to really dislike the general public. So, anger, frustration and bad decision making are the result of an American public gone terribly wrong. I personally don't give a rip what cops do to losers in this society. They have no rights as far as I am concerned and I bet if our founding fathers saw what goes on now days. They would re-write the constitution.

First off...."Never assault a police officer" as you can plainly see the female put her hands on him first..........this is near Franklin H.S....I counted atleast 20 people around him....this is in a area that is known for Gang violence..... he is a white officer..and of course they are going to put on a show......poor black neighborhood being picked on by a white officer profiling.....pla..lease!!!....every ethnic nieghorhood trying to be the next.... "Rodney King".......got get paid!!!!....she assaulted him...she interfered with an arrest....and she got punched...serves her right!!!.....Justice served...don't do the crime, if you can't do the time....no...don't do it

I think he had every right! He was alone, they resisted arrest and then she attacked him when he was arresting someone else! He has a right as a human being as well to not get attacked and as an officer to stop idiots like these people from thinking you can attack the police! This is justified! Good Work Seattle Police... don't let this bad story put you in a corner! You fight a cop man or woman, black or white... YOU WILL BE STOPPED AT ALL MEANS! He has a gun on his side... I suppose it's ok for these idiots to grab that and shoot him too right? you are all idiots!!

The raw video shows the majority of why the officer felt threatened. And as for "anger management" both women showed NONE whatsoever.

When your dumb enough to get in a officers face this is what happens. The other lady and I use that term losely should have also been arrested for interfering with an officer. As soon as she pushed the officer it was assault on her part.

Your cops are OUT of control!!! Off duty they pull their guns on people because they have road rage!! In jail they are taped beating a teenager now it happens again.... They get caught on tape watching a teen be beaten up… Be proud SEATTLE !!
