A semi-truck fire shut down eastbound I-90 near Mercer Island Thursday afternoon, backing up traffic for hours and snarling the drive well past the evening commute.
Just before 3:30 p.m. a truck caught fire, shutting down all eastbound lanes just east of E. Mercer Way. The driver made it out safely and the truck only contained salt, causing no hazard materials concerns, but the fire caused a backup of three to four miles long.
Two eastbound lanes reopened an hour later. At 6:30 p.m. the traffic was still bumper-to-bumper on I-90. Traffic eventually started moving around 7:45 p.m. and was finally cleared after 10:15 p.m.
