Three Seattle Police officers suspended for using vulgar language

SEATTLE – Three Seattle Police officers have been suspended for using vulgar language while making an arrest.

The incident in question happened on Capitol Hill in March of 2010.

Two squad cars with four officers pulled over alleged gang members who were allegedly driving recklessly.

The suspects were Latino and were using vulgar language. The three suspended officers were white and were also using vulgar language.

Officer Brett Schoenberg, referring to male genitals, told a suspect, "(blank) my (blank)."
Schoenberg was suspended for 20 days.

Officer Casey Steiger told a suspect "I’m going to break your (blanking) neck."

Steiger was suspended for 15 days.

Officer Corey Williams said "I’m going to skull (blank) you and drag you down the street."

He was suspended for 20 days.

The fourth officer did not use profanity and was not disciplined.

The vulgar words were recorded on police car dash cams, but the videos are not being released to the public.

The officers justified their gutter language, saying "dealing with obvious gang-bangers, it's the way we have to talk to them, to de-escalate the situation.”

But the police office of accountability ruled the profanity lacked professionalism.

Police policy does allow occasional use of profanity, but it is discouraged.

The three officers are going to appeal the severity of their discipline.

the funniest part of this whole thing is that the individuals stopped by these officers refused to cooperate with the Office of Professional Affairs. I gotta say this, Seattle, be careful what you wish for. Between the media and the liberals who think crime can be dealt with using hugs, you are going to do nothing but discourage SPD to go out and do their jobs. Why would a Seattle Officer go out and put his career in jeopardy trying to do the right thing when they know they will be worn out in the media, and by the liberals who pressure the department into making such ridiculous disciplinary actions? then, to top it off, King 5 has a vindictive female reporter with some kind of axe to grind that is making one officer her personal target. stay classy, seattle. see how far it gets you

If nothing else, this is simply unprofessional. They should be ashamed of how they conducted themselves. This is not a Liberal-conservative issue. Another poster on here mentioned that we "liberal fools" should go down to Mexico and see what no authority looks like??? Really??? Sounds like you have fairly low standards and low expectations. Comparing us to a disfunctional government. Thats pretty sad and makes no sense. Who on here is saying the police should have no authority? Not me, and not anyone else on here. We are saying they should conduct themselves like professionals. If they want to be regarded as professionals than they should conduct themselves as such. FBI, ATF, DEA and all other Federal Law Enforcement Agencies have higher standards for professionalism, and local agencies should be the same. In most cases, local agencies pay more, so there is no reason they should not expect more.

Actually they were rewarded with paid vacations! They were suspended with FULL PAY.... I'm surprised that they were not promoted. Chief Diaz needs to be FIRED! Most people in Seattle are in complete denial and support the police even when the murder Indian wood carvers and black guys that are not armed. No matter how much misconduct the police do in Seattle, they have the full support of the general public and City Council.

Funny how the fair and impartial media failed to mention the gansters who said they were going to come to the officer's homes, murder them, rape and murder their family members, and burn their homes down. Yet the police are the bad guys... And FYI: suspension means UNPAID. This is no small punishment. Think if you own a home and have kids, and your family had to go without your income for nearly a month.

Threatening to murder someone and have sex with a piece of their dead body, and inviting someone to commit an act of homosexual sodomy on you is not what I would call de-escalating the situation. It is quite the opposite, in fact. These problems with childish behavior will go away when people stop making pathetic, laughable excuses for them, and not until.

It's just a simple suspension to keep the liberal fools happy. It didn't say suspension without pay. Good for the cops, now they get a few days off to relax. For the liberal fools out there, go to Mexico for a few days and get a real taste of no authority. I doubt you'll make it back.

Sounds to me like they threatened a citizen's life? I don't think anyone who threatens people's life should carry a gun and a badge? Who are the morons allowing these punks to even carry a badge? With Birk, and the head stomping and doing what the mexican out of you? Seattle Police force have proved to me to be a organization that is a danger to the public. Now people will have the right to also state they were afraid for there lives when dealing with Seattle Police Dept. Citizens now can use the same BS line POLICE do, I was scared for my life! At least now over the past year we have proof they are a danger to citizens.

This astounds me, since we all know that criminals are polite and respectful, and usually really like going in to handcuffs as they commit illegal and harmful acts to those upstanding in this society.... Let's just make it so the police are only equipped with a wagging finger at the criminal rat set, that would make us all safe. Seattle, you are in grave danger with this trend of villifying those that protect and serve us, dealing with the lowest levels of evil, that you can't imagine. Keep up the good work, stripping our law enforcement of any pride they have. I know I feel safer already with these suspensions...not.

I am encouraged by these suspensions which seems to be a positive effort to raise the professionalism of the SPD. Too bad the officers felt comfortable in the first place using this kind of language with anyone, even a suspect that is dishing it out. This was a byproduct of an underlying management and/or union attitude that was all too willing to insulate officers from consequences of bad behavior. I am always more inclined to take the side of police officers in most conversations, but it is imperative that they conduct themselves with professionalism.

SPD wont release the video because it makes them look a lot better, if they would release it, you would then see the truth of what SPD is made of, just a bunch of kids with authority and a gun that came with the job. If you would see the footage, your respect and interest in SPD will vanish.

Having to deal with the Gang Trash, and now on top of everything else, you are piling the Seattle Liberals on top of the cop. Forget it, I would rather be a garbage man. A lot less stress. We have also heard racist and sexist remarks, we should hear them again and use them freely as well. I am sure we have all seen a naked body or two. In the same manner that we have been anesthetized to language, everyone should run around naked including the cops. Honestly though, disrespect, threats and insults never make for a better situation.

A simple F-bomb or something would not be a big deal but the phrases that were used are the problem. I mean the last 2 quotes from the officers ("I’m going to break your (blanking) neck." and "I’m going to skull (blank) you and drag you down the street.") could easily be considered threats which opens the door for charges being filed. When has insulting, demeaning, threatening or challenging a person in such a manner ever made things more calm? When their supervisors addressed them about the situation you think they told the supervisors "I’m going to break your (blanking) neck." so they could "de-escalate" getting chewed out?

This is just sooooo wrong! It proves that you CAN overdo political correctness. Monroe527 said it right - When you are dealing with trash you have to talk trash. I'm also positive they don't take their "work talk" home with them. Just drop the case and let them get back to work - and fire the nut in the Office of Accountability.

Yet amazingly, None of the officers that have been caught lying on their reports and making false statements are punished at all. with the stomp video they ALL lied. With the shove downtown that officer lied to paramedics saying Christopher Harris ran into the wall head first instead of being shoved backwards. with the Asian cop downtown who he admitted lying in court. with the girl beaten in king county jail both officers lied on their reports. None were disciplined or fired for their lies yet every single case before is now in question. Such disgraceful leadership from both chief Diaz and Sue Rahr. Time to vote out all King County and Seattle city council members who sit in silence while these LIARS are free to abuse our rights again and again. I wont be voting for this mayor again either. They disgrace the people of Seattle and King County.

They should have never been disciplined for this. When you deal with scum and POS people you need to be able speak the language they will understand. This chief and mayor need to grow a back bone. The people that those officers were dealing with really shouldn't have a leg to stand on. I'm sure they put complaints in against any law enforcement they come in contact with. This is getting out of control. If you do law enforcement right you can't avoid complains but they will always come from dirt bags like this.. Who in any other country would get slammed on there face and people could say anything about it. SPD need to get vulgar lang. put into there contract like King County that why they can walk away from these situations with no problem.

The frofane language could be appropriate in certain situations but what they said is more the issue the actual context. Seattle PD has a lot of work ahead of it. These two officers are being made an example of and there will be many more until they get control of the officers and hold them accountable. It is the Command of the Seattle Police that allowed all this to get this far.

clear2copy, why don't you just come out and say you're a cop? "Establishing a command presence" has nothing whatsoever to do with the vocabulary of a 14 year old boy. Establishing a command presence can be done by giving commands and then enforcing them. And no, that does not mean pushing someone backwards into a wall when their hands are being raised, or shooting a drunk Native American, or tossing a girl around in her cell like she was a rag doll. I understand perfectly these are not merely wayward children the cops are dealing with, but the cop's behavior makes them look undisciplined and poorly trained. Do you want to learn how to establish a command presence when physical intervention is required? Visit a martial arts class. Tell me how much vulgar language you hear. Then tell me vulgar language is a tool used to de-escalate, and establish "command presence".
