SEATTLE - One way to get an expensive cup of coffee is by leaving your belongings unattended while you wait in line for your latte. Police are warning against it because thieves are banking on people making that mistake.

In downtown Seattle, some coffee drinkers confessed to using their bags or laptops to save a table while they order their morning coffee.

"I feel safe leaving it there, not because I think nobody will take it, but I think my odds are better that nobody will," said John Gessford-Wilhelmsen.

"I suppose you do leave it unattended for one second," said Caron Roesler. "You are thinking you can watch it."

"I always do that," admitted Daniel Hernandez. "I feel secure about the city. I always leave everything and nothing happens to me."

In New York, it became such a problem detectives began conducting sting operations to catch coffee house crooks, according to a report by The New York Times.

While it is a preventable crime, Seattle police see it daily.

"We respond to these types of calls probably a dozen times a day," said Officer Mark Jamieson. "Crime is going to happen and sometimes there is not a lot we can do about it, but with this the owner has all the power."

Maybe you just gotta make sure that the thief tries to assault you when you attempt to stop them. Maybe the following will help clear things up a bit. The statute in Washington state appears to be very simply and broadly stated. The law allows use of deadly force in the lawful defense of oneself, a family member, or any other person, when there is reasonable ground to prevent action(s) of the person slain to commit a felony or to do injury or harm, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished; or in the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, on those in their presence, or upon or in a dwelling, or other place of abode, in which they are. Washington state doesn’t have a specific Castle Doctrine law, but has no duty to retreat as precedent was set when the State Supreme Court found "that there is no duty to retreat when a person is assaulted in a place where he or she has a right to be."

hebeshebewebe - We used to burn women who could float at the stake because we thought that they were a witch. We used to slaughter 1000's of Native Americans because they were savages. We used to enslave Africans because we thought they were not human. We used to not let women vote because we thought their voice was not valid... See where I am going with this? I am certainly glad that I live in the real world, not YOUR fantasy world. Look around, this isn't the old west. I am not sure if you're aware of this, but even if you have a CCW, it's still illegal to dump a hollow point in the head of a purse thief, no matter how much you think it's in your rights to, it's not. That is not fantasy, that's reality.

freemontroll once again checks in with his fantasy world opinions. Scumbags who steal others things deserve whatever they get including a full metal jacketed hollow point in their worthless head. We use to hang horse theives and cattle theives in this country and people knew it.

Yeah Stryker, that's a good idea! If you want to spend some quality time in a 10x10 cell. I sincerely hope that was an attempt at humor, and if not, I really hope you don't carry a firearm...

Hope they got permission from that dude in the background for using his photo - otherwise I see a libel case in the making.

True, people shouldn't steal things. However, in the real world, there are criminals. Perhaps the concept of putting your items on a table and turning your back on it is a nice fantasy, it's also not real smart. Do you lock your front door when you leave? Do you lock your car while you're in the theater? Then why would you be so stupid as to set down your expensive laptop and expect it to still be there? Better idea: Keep your stuff with you as you go through the line, then see if there's a table when you're done, like anyone with a sense of fairness actually would.

Headline should read, "Thugs target nieve liberals". Liberal like to pretend bad things don't happen in the world. This attitude just makes it easier for the thugs to operate.

"Here is a case where the police blame the victim." - gabriel1150 The police didn't blame the victim. The police said that the victim could have prevented the crime. The police can't be everywhere all the time to prevent every crime. But sometimes crime victims have the power to not become victims in the first place. This is one of those times. You are right, we should be able to leave our belongings on a chair or a table while we order our coffee without having to worry that they will be stolen. But that isn't the real world we live in.

Here is a case where the police blame the victim. Leaving something out unattended for any length of time is not a good idea, but it is not an invite to having those things stolen. People who steal are thieves and there is no excuse for it. They should go to jail and honest people should have the right and freedom to feel safe for themselves and their things.

Keep an eye on it and when some scum bag grabs your belongings, you knock the stuffing out him. Ladies, I know how you are over your purses, so if you don't want to brawl, keep your stuff with you.
