TACOMA, Wash. – The city of Tacoma has passed a resolution against Arizona's new immigration law and is asking that state to rescind the law. But the city is not going so far as to boycott Arizona.

The Tacoma City Council passed the resolution by a 5-to-3 vote with one person abstaining. The resolution asks Arizona to rescind the law and demands that the Obama Administration enact comprehensive immigration reform.

The law, which takes effect July 29, requires Arizona authorities to check the immigration status of suspicious people. The resolution's sponsor says the law is unconstitutional.

The vote had been postponed a week so that the entire council could vote on the matter.

The resolution needed five votes to pass, and even as the meeting got underway, the co-sponsor, Councilman Ryan Mello wouldn't guarantee it would pass.

Mello says the Arizona law is unconstitutional and sends the wrong message about how police and citizens should relate to one another.

"The relationship between average citizens like you and I, policemen are so important that we have to send a strong message, that we have that really strong relationship between law enforcement and average citizens about how we're treated and our civil liberties are protected," he said.

Dozens of citizens showed up at the meeting – some in support and some in opposition of the resolution.

A KING 5 SurveyUSA poll taken a week earlier showed of 412 people surveyed, 57 percent of Tacoma residents support Arizona's law and 72 percent wanted to continue doing business with the state.

Mello and co-sponsor Lauren Walker revised the language in the resolution, taking out references to a "boycott." Only a fifth of those surveyed said they supported such a boycott.

Not everyone from Tacoma agrees with this foolish action of the council. At election time voters will remember this bunch of busy bodies who can't even keep their potholes filled but think they can tell another state how to handle themselves.

In Arizona, many legal aliens will be inconvenienced due to illegals. Is it Arizona's fault? Nope. It's the illegals.

I'm ashamed of Seattle for its stupid decision to boycott Arizona. Arizona is a pioneer in the war against illegals, and illegals must be stopped. I want Arizona to boycott Seattle and Tacoma! I was going to go to Hawaii for my vacation. Instead, I'm going to Arizona and spend a few thousand dollars there.

I came to this country legally. Coming to this country illegally is cheating. It's not fair. I support Arizona's new law and I hope more and more State will follow.

This is how I feel about this...If I go into another country without my PASSPORT.....I would be imprisoned or worse...so who says that Mexico is any different? I have to show my ID ...drivers license to cash a check...when I get pulled over or better yet to prove who I am....I do not see anything wrong this ...So in other words If I have to prove who I am so does everyone else! And if you CAN NOT PROVE THAT YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE IN THE UNITED STATES ....WELL THEN YOU NEED TO GO HOME!!!!

Things must be good in Tacoma, if this is what their council has to worry about. I'm sure the folks in Arizona will take this resolution with the utmost seriousness.

I don't understand why city councils even waste the time to talk about the issue, we have our own issue's in the Tacoma city area, just take care of those and what happens in AZ is none of our business.

The only reason you get resolutions against illigal immigration passed by these idiots is because 75% of city councilmen in this country don't even know where an egg comes from.

The crazy part is that Tacoma hires illegal aliens through city contracts and thereby is the reason that illegals are coming through Arizona. Tacoma needs to start the same E-verify program that Lakewood has had for the last year, and remove a big reason that illegals come here. If Tacoma is going to be a sanctuary city, I sure don't want to hear Tacomans whining about rapists who were previously deported 9 times. In the meantime, let's boycott Tacoma and shop in Lakewood !!

Businesses profit from the CHEAP illegal immigrant labor! Until businesses are held accountable for breaking the law, illegals will flock to this country. Two fold problem - businesses who knowingly break the law by hiring illegals (paying them under the table at greatly reduced wages!) and immigration laws/policies that are not being enforced. Go ahead Tacoma, make asses of yourselves by opposing AZ, but most people in this country support AZ ! Given a choice, I would rather pay more for lettuce than be forced to continue to support millions of illegals and their families. These businesses do NOT contribute to health care, housing, food, or TAXES for these 'employees'! Undocumented workers do NOT pay taxes, people! I stand behind AZ and sincerely hope other States follow their lead......

Gee, a policy that started under Raygun and encouraged by every cheap-labor-seeking conservative hypocrite since is in no way responsible for the immigration mess. Best way to solve this is throw open the border & use big Cat tractors to load up all the bodies of ppl killed in the stampede. The sight of hundreds or thousands of their dead comrades rotting in the desert sun should be an adequate deterrent. Oh, hundreds of thousands more immigrants would do wonders for the housing industry, since it appears builders cannot afford to pay the constructions workers or landscapers a decent wage :)

I wonder if any of these city councils can point to a single country in the world that lets people just walk in and take up residence. Thats what they are arguing that we should do. And all of those arguments about immigration reform, simple dressing with nice words for let everyone who has snuck into the country illegally stay forever.

What I would like to know is if councilman Millo represent a special interest group? Just when I think city council has hit the bottom, they pull other one out of the hat. Lets send all of the illegals to Tacoma,WA and let the city council pay the bills. I hope the Gov Jan Brewer runs for president she will have our vote. What part of the consitution is unconsitutional?? Just because you belong to a special interest group doesn't make our constitution illegal. I know that the Liberal Lawyers are trying to make it that way. Let's also make the Mexican Gov start paying for all of these anchor babys and the cost of the illegals to the American tax payer.

tom street. I believe that the gov regulations are stronger. As AZ wrote it, they have to have a reason to pull you over, but with federal law you can profile. If I am wrong sorry, but that is what I understand; Thus, federal is worse. Not that I don;t disagree. I believe we should watch everyone from every nation if they are a threat to the AMERICANS. EVERYONE needs to be watched. That is NATIONAL SECURITY!!! We do not need to call them man made disasters. We need to call them terrorists!!!

I can't believe that we are at war with each other in U.S.A. Tacoma is not smart in following a liberal city(Seattle). They should keep the matters to themselves and we should let the law prevail, as we are a nation of laws. We must uphold them. I understand why so many have hopes of coming here. I really do. But PLEASE keep it legal. This nation is comprised of the demise with the actual natives, So much history has become before us. People should remember how much natives were beaten for their own language, practices. They should remember we were fed rotten meat and diseased blankets. The natives have dealt with a lot in history and it is sad to see that outsiders continue to threaten us as natives now. I seen a sign that read" give me healthcare, no taxes, or we will shoot police." Is that really the mentality, we want in U.S. I, for one will never buy anything in Tacoma and Seattle ever again. The boycott starts here, my friends.

Another tribute to "on beyond stupid". Another City that can't even take care of itself, protesting a State that is trying to solve it's own problems, in the absence of the Federal Government upholding their responsibility. Tacoma, Seattle, and any other governmental agencies, that take this type of action, are out of bounds. Polls show their actions come from the councils own political agenda, and clearly are not representative of the peoples wishes. What is the elected Councils job anyway, to act independently or act on the behalf of their constituency? We don't need nannies to tell us what's right. The Councils need to mind their own business, and do the job they were elected to do.

Illegal immigrants are here ILLEGALLY. If Tacoma pursues this assinine vote against AZ - they are voting for illegality! Americans want secure borders, not just in the Southern states, but all across this nation. Americans are fed up with supporting all of these people who cross our borders illegally. It's time to go after the businesses that hire illegals, which is ILLEGAL. They profit, we pay, and many of these of these poor illegals are nothing more than slaves. I'm against illegal immigration, but I still feel for the people who are being used and abused by the businesses that hire them! The illegals don't pay taxes and their American 'employers' are bilking them and the government because they are also not paying payroll taxes, health care or anything else for these people, leaving that up to the American taxpayers. I say, go after the businesses that hire illegals and shut them down! Deport illegals and welcome those who come here legally.

Arizona is Awesome! I Love this Law. I am sick and tired of paying my hard earned legal money to someone that does not want to follow the proper channels to be in this country. Deport them to an area where they have no chance of getting back into this country. Mexicans can do this, so can a terrorist. What's the difference? They both illegal. Wake up America, The State is trying to stop another 9-11. They should build a fence 20" high with 100,00 volts of electricity going through it. Let there own goverment take care of them.

The governor of Arizona is my hero. She isn't trying to be popular; she's trying to do the right thing for the citizens of her state. This is for ALL citizens, no matter their race or their color. Illegal immigration and violence by non-citizens hurts everyone. Drug trafficking, human trafficking, and violent acts along our southern border must stop.

Give it a rest!! Arizona only did the job the Federal Government is neglecting. It is mandated to them in the Constitution to protect the security of our borders. Mexican drug cartels/gangs are smuggling drugs and even kidnapping and killing American citizens on our Southern borders. Obamunism preaches that we be nice to people, they want to disarm us so we cannot protect ourselves, and they sit in an area surrounded by 24 hour security fearing no harm. Yet the American citizens who live on the borders are being killed if they interfere with the drug smugglers business. Take off the blinders America - we need to secure our borders. I applaud AZ. They have the cajones to do what DC will not.

I don't think any one really has read the immigration laws for this country, and what the people of Mexico really have done isn't what the laws states, and our ancestors weren't able to just come here and stay. I understand why they do come but they are not doing it right. And what about all the drugs that are coming across the border what I here from people in AZ is that they are tired of it, and they want something done about it, I support what AZ is doing, other people from any other countries can't just come here without papers. I am not saying they are not welcome here, just do it the way everyone else has. And there is no reason in this day and age that Mexico can't make their own country better for there people. The citizens of the northern border, have to have papers from down here to visit if they are going to stay for more than a few hours. And we don't need to use unacceptable language towards any person.

Tacoma council - why don't you do what you are paid to do - furnish your citizens that PAY your salary with the services that are required of you. Stop waisting taxpayer money with this rediculous resolution. The Arizona law only allows what is legal under the U.S. and Arizona Constituion and was also voted overwelmingly by the population of Arizona. Read the bill - I betcha the city council hasn't even read it (I mean, why should they, the President's staff hasn't) -- illegal aliens are just that - illegal - PERIOD.
