BELLINGHAM, Wash. – People in parts of Western Washington were surprised to look outside Thursday to see snow coming down – and almost a month into spring.
Residents in Whatcom County and motorists in the Central Bellingham area woke up to winter conditions. Snow started falling at around 6:30 a.m. and quickly began accumulating on surfaces and creating hazardous driving conditions.
Trooper Keith Leary of the Washington State Patrol said there were at least four accidents reported that involved cars sliding due to the snow. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
"It's very unexpected. We figured we'd be out of the snow, so instead of getting our boats out, we out to get our skis back out," Leary said humorously.
The Bellingham School District changed to bus snow routes.
By afternoon, residents in the Kitsap Peninsula, Hood Canal and Mason County areas started seeing snow as well.
KING 5 Chief Meteorologist says the snow mostly changed to rain by late afternoon, but showers were expected to continue into mid-evening Thursday with lows in the 30's. Most of Friday is expected to be dry, with the potential for showers south and west of Olympia.
