On what was supposed to be the biggest night of their high school lives, 20 Glacier Peak High School students said they were stranded by a limousine company Saturday night on the side of I-405 after the vehicle broke down.
“It just ruined all of our plans,” said student Luca Haff. “We were probably there for an hour and 30 minutes.”
Haff and her friends reserved a 2008 Cadillac Escalade stretch limousine to take them to the Seattle Hard Rock Café, then to prom, then to The Cheesecake Factory and finally back to the high school. Instead, a 2006 Escalade showed up. Haff said it was in rough shape.
“Everything inside was falling off. The windows were broken, the speakers were broken,” she said, adding that it had no air conditioning.
Just past the I-405/SR 520 interchange, the vehicle broke down. According to the owner of JJ Limousines, JJ Sidhu, the Cadillac had a faulty alternator.
Police helped move the stricken Escalade to the shoulder, but then left, according to Haff.
Haff’s friends said Sidhu arrived roughly 20 minutes after the limo stopped and never talked to them. He called a tow truck, and then left.
“We weren’t spoken to by anyone other than our driver,” said fellow prom-goer Quin Tuckman, “You’re going back and saying holy cow, I was stranded on my prom night.”
Sidhu denied the teenagers were left behind, and that the wrong limo was delivered. He said he was willing to find alternate transportation even though his entire fleet was booked.
“The driver said the parents are coming to pick them up,” he said. “I didn’t bother (to find another vehicle). I gave them back their money and we’re done.”
Haff and the other students deny telling anyone parents were on the way. In the meantime, the limo was getting increasingly hot, with no air conditioning and windows that would not roll down.
“We all could’ve gotten hit,” said Haff.
Eventually, the teens' parents arrived just as the tow truck was preparing to take the limousine away. They caught the last hour of prom before coming home.
“I don’t think I’m ever going to top the fact that I have pictures of me and my date hitchhiking on the side of the road on prom night,” Tuckman said.
