SEATTLE - Seattle Police say nearly two dozen "smash and grab" burglaries are most likely connected. The crimes have been plaguing West Seattle, Burien and White Center for weeks.

Police say the burglars appear to be targeting small businesses and specifically their cash register or vending machines.

"They threw the rock in," said Uptown Espresso owner Dow Lucarell, "and made a b-line for the register."

His shop on Delridge Avenue SW has been hit twice in a little more than a week. Both times, the burglar or burglars took the entire register and hauled it out.

"That's not good problem-solving," said Lucarell.

There are other similarities. The crimes happen between midnight and 5 a.m., and many have been along major thoroughfares.

Gauhar Faruqi's Zebra Print and Copy, on Fauntleroy, was also victimized twice.

"And all they took was a vending machine," he said.

Police aren't sure if the burglars are using a getaway car, but say businesses should think twice about security and placement of registers. But they plan on increased patrols in the interim.

"Enough is enough," said Lucarell.

You've been traumatized obviously. I empathize with your name calling though misdirected....No worries I can take it, though I don't condone your behavior either.

I empathize 100% with anyone who has been victimized. Law enforcement can't be everywhere at once unfortunately, but overall I beleive they are in those jobs because they care and probably can also relate to the rest of us out of having been taken advantage of at some point in life. I'm fairly confident cops wish they could help all citizens. I would hope that all the victim's out there know the importance of keep things in perspective too. Don't let the injustices in life eat you up alive. Although robbery is abhorrent, it can be understood when viewed from the cultural perspective of the robber. Understanding the reasons for actions does not mean that one condones the actions. I advocate for people to be more proactive up front, and understand that we must protect ourselves and the property we own from those less capable of being law abiding citizens. We all know the moron's are out there lying in wait, looking for their next victims.

@smallbusiness: And there's not a d@mn thing one can do either. Considering you only get a few months in jail if you don't have a gun, who the heck cares?!?!?! At this point, I am pretty sure I know who burglarized my shop. But the cop refuses to do any forensics! He says the city won't pay for it, unless it's like a homicide! So if any burglars are reading this, you now know you are rest-assured in Seattle and have the green light to break into any neighbors' business or house... cause cops don't care.

Getting robbed is no easy feat. Especially for a small business owner. Even if you get burglarized and you place the money somewhere else, the cost of replacing windows, paying contractors, and alarm systems is costly. It is unfortunate that they are targeting small shops, independent owners who are trying to survive in this economy. I really hope they catch them.

advocate11111: You're a f*cking moron. I just got burglarized twice in my woodworking shop. You must work for the insurance companies. They usually will hit twice, cause they are lazy and uncreative. I am sleeping in my shop now, if they meet me there, I will send them back to their creator.

Is it legal to put explosives in the cash register?

Moral of this story....If you get robbed once, change your policy. Stop keeping your money in the register overnight. Obviously not too difficult to figure this one out. Sounds like a scam to me....but maybe not. Just my opinion. BTW Sounds like a potato gun type projectile device would be required in order to move the rock with the force required to hit the wall after penetrating the glass. No disrespect intended.....but this is the definition of a lame business owner among other things. Thanks for the story King 5.
