BURIEN, Wash. - The Highline School District tells KING 5 News, it is now looking for a new head football coach for Evergreen High School, after a Level 3 sex offender, a convicted rapist, wanted by police for not registering as a sex offender, was able to become a volunteer with the team.

Two young women, managers with the football team, alerted administrators that the volunteer was making comments that crossed the line, and made them feel uncomfortable.

The man was immediately escorted off campus, the district said.

"Because it was the head coach’s responsibility to see that the volunteer had passed a background check before having contact with students, we have rescinded the job offer to the head coach," said District Superintendent John Welch.

That volunteer, Lashawn Jamar Ferguson, was convicted of rape in 1998. He is being held without bail in the King County Jail for failure to register.

The Highline district made headlines last month after a male staffer was accused of performing illegal and inappropriate physical exams on student athletes. That staffer has been fired, has had his state medical certificate suspended, and remains under investigation into whether any of his actions constituted a sex crime.

We have a funny lot here. Half you Tea baggers want a smaller goverment, less taxes and more personal freedoms. Yet at the same time you want bigger, better police and more enforcement, longer jail sentences, more prisons and more guns. Well, that math just doesnt add up. I think that procedures were not followed that allow this situation here to evolve, the solutions most of you are envoking is excessive. You are making the punishment for rape more than murder in this State. This area is unique when it comes to sex offenders. Due to the sex treatment facility at Anderson, we have one of the highest per capital sex offenders population in the US. Some register and some claim homeless and are free to wonder where they choose. Our Police force do not have the money or the manpower to chase and find all delinquent offender. Tax increases are voted down, equipment upgrades are voted down, increases in force are voted down and yet you want all this justice......

Level 1 's are the least likely to re-offend, and usually fall into the category mentioned by posters here of a very young man involved with a younger girl, sometimes knowingly and sometimes not. Level 2's are often child molestors/indecent liberties with minors. They are considered a risk to re-offend. Level 3's are the worst of the lot. Usually violent rapists or child molestors, showing no remorse. 3's almost always re-offend. To not register, as required by law, says to me this guy was looking for his next victim, within the Highline School system. Shame on the school for not doing a background check and not protecting their students!

Oh, I totally agree, sonya, now that I am a parent myself. But what I am saying is that someone in that situation should be able to try and make a better life for themselves than to be labeled/treated at as a "sex offender" for the rest of their lives.

All I am saying is that when you see the someone labeled sex offender know the facts before condeming them, look at jessjustice comments, do you feel the friend should be a "Sex Offender" ? The guy in this story obvoiusly is labeled correctly but when people start flinging the label around about every persn labeled as a sex offender it bothers me. I have a freind who is a sex offender. He was 22 and had sex with a female who told him she was 19. 3 months later he got arrested because she was actually 15. How is that fair? Now he is labeled as a sex offender for life. The cops didnt care she lied he was at fault because he was the adult. Do we start checking ID with every person we meet?

to jessjustice...he shouldn't have been having sex with minors he got what he deserved. Thats the right parents have, kids don't have that right to make that decision. I would have done the same thing.

A level 1 sex offender could be something like a 15 year old having sex with her 18 year old boyfriend, against her parents orders and the parents call the police... I had a friend in HS who had this happen, and now this guy is labeled a "sex offender". They had been together when they were 14 and 17... Yet, I do believe that sex offenders should be tattooed on their foreheads and castrated!!!!

soooo charlee2010 do we know this from experience??? I want to know why the school couldn't find this out?? Or do they even run background checks? sounds like it doesn't. I agree ALL sex offenders should be tattooed across the forehead. I don't think they hand out harsh enough punishments. Those that haven't been through it would not understand the emotional torment it causes.

Before you go and criticize the label of "Sex Offender" know the truth about the crime. I agree in this case he should be locked up, a Lvl 3 convictied of rape would most likely put him in the violent and dangerous category. But everyone is lumping all the labeled into one category without knowing all the facts and being educated about what it really means. Just because they are labeled as a "Sex Offender" doesnt mean they shouldnt be able to try and rebuild there lives specially for the lvl1's.

I like chuckstr76 comment, tattoo that jerks forehead and make sure it's big and detailed! Schools are offering less protection for our children, it is very disturbing!

3 on rape as a capital offense. Add all child molesters, murderers and drug traffickers, and this worl would be a lot better.

I agree, rape should be a capitol offense. Too bad our Supreme Court decided that the death penalty is unconstitutional for people like this. People like this should shudder at the thought of what will happen to them if they commit the crime.

He CHOSE to be a sex offender, its not a label! He is a level 3 and should NOT be out in society! What happened to the fingerprinting and FBI/ State Patrol background check that school districts and the state are required to do BEFORE they allow adults around the kids?!?!

Well, perhaps he should have thought about that before he raped somebody... In a better world, rape would be a capitol offense...
