BURIEN, Wash. - The Highline School District tells KING 5 News, it is now looking for a new head football coach for Evergreen High School, after a Level 3 sex offender, a convicted rapist, wanted by police for not registering as a sex offender, was able to become a volunteer with the team.
Two young women, managers with the football team, alerted administrators that the volunteer was making comments that crossed the line, and made them feel uncomfortable.
The man was immediately escorted off campus, the district said.
"Because it was the head coach’s responsibility to see that the volunteer had passed a background check before having contact with students, we have rescinded the job offer to the head coach," said District Superintendent John Welch.
That volunteer, Lashawn Jamar Ferguson, was convicted of rape in 1998. He is being held without bail in the King County Jail for failure to register.
The Highline district made headlines last month after a male staffer was accused of performing illegal and inappropriate physical exams on student athletes. That staffer has been fired, has had his state medical certificate suspended, and remains under investigation into whether any of his actions constituted a sex crime.
