MARYSVILLE, Wash. – A semi-truck collision on Interstate 5 caused a major distraction for passing drivers Thursday morning.

At 5:10 a.m., a semi left the road, struck a tree and ripped open the box trailer northbound Interstate 5 near exit 202, near the Seattle Premium Outlet Mall in Marysville.

The cab was destroyed, but the driver suffered only minor injuries.

Police believe the driver may have been fatigued or fell asleep.

The truck was traveling from California to British Columbia and was carrying general cargo that included food and auto parts.

Crews were at the scene all morning cleaning up the spilled cargo and the wrecked truck and trailer.

The driver faces infractions for running his truck off the road. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor.

Over the course of the day, a significant backup developed following the incident.

As of 2:40 p.m., all lanes are clear, but traffic is backed up through south Everett. Drivers are advised to allow extra time and use alternate routes.
