SEATTLE -- A new Seattle Police program hopes to build bridges between officers and the community through a little socializing.  The program is called “Living Room Conversations” and it involves small group gatherings between officers and residents.

These "conversations" are designed to break down the barriers by bringing everyone together in a more comfortable atmosphere.  The department matches residents willing to host an event with the police officers who work directly in that neighborhood.

Monday night, Katherine Logan invited friends and neighbors for a gathering at her Seattle home.  More than a dozen people spent about two hours getting to know the officers and asking questions about crime.

Seattle Police say the program is just one of many it's using to reach out to the community.   Sergeant Jay Shin has attended several.

Shin said, “I think when citizens can trust the police and police can trust the citizens; only good can come out of it.”

The department has hosted about 30, including one at Victoria Romero’s Mount Baker home.  She said the event gave her community the chance to be heard about concerns in their area.

The program started before the Department of Justice released its report about issues within SPD.  Many officers hope positive interactions like this will counteract some of the negative feelings people have about the department.

This is definitely out of the box thinking and in a good way. A lot of people don't feel comfortable talking in large, sterile conditions, but in a smaller setting like someones home...what a great idea. Small steps in the right direction, are still steps in the right direction...nice job SPD!

How about firing officers who lie on their reports? We can't even count how many have been PROVEN to lie. Our freedom depends on it. How about officers being able to take the fifth and stopping investigations into their abuse and rights violations. nearly 100% of the time according to the federal investigation this has happened. How about firing Kathryn Olson who bilked the tax payers out of 3/4 of a million dollars as our civilian Director who's job was to oversee the OPA and report to the Mayor and the City Council. She failed miserably and we are all paying a horrible price for this blatant department wide corruption through investigations, lawsuits, settlements, and both prosecutors and defense lawyers. The tax payers paid for all of this not the police. It is effecting budgets across the board.

@William_Stewcf8, Not sure where you are located, but it isn't far enough away. I can still smell your B.S.

Yikes - the LAST place I'd feel comfortable talking to a cop is in my living room - call it a guilty conscience. For all of me, the best PR the SPD can have is the officers working security @ various retail outlets in Seattle, most of those guys are downright cuddly!
