SEATTLE -- Seattle's City Council has given its blessing to apply for extended hours that may allow some bars to operate past the standard closing time.
The city unanimously approved a petition to apply for the extension from the Washington State Liquor Board.
Extended hours would not be granted to every bar and restaurant. The city and board members have said only those establishments with a proven record of safety would be granted the trial extension.
Seattle Police have also agreed to a trial period.
Mayor Mike McGinn hopes to have extended hours for specific bars by 2012.
