Disabled frustrated over Seattle Center parking

SEATTLE - The elimination of all the handicapped parking spots on the grounds of the Seattle Center has upset organizations for the disabled.

The spots were removed for construction of a garden and pedestrian walkway between the Intiman and the Seattle Repertory theaters. But, those who can't walk are having a hard time getting to the Seattle Center.

Several replacement disabled spots were installed across the street from the Center. It's too far and too dangerous according to many disabled drivers.

"It bothers me that people in city government make these decisions without thinking of the impact it has on people." says Judye Allman, who is in a wheel chair after a motorcycle accident.

The Center also added disabled parking in the Mercer garage, but disabled vans are too tall for it and it has a block-long sloping grade. In all, the 13 disabled spots have been replaced with 39.

Seattle Center Director Robert Nellams hopes disabled organizations will compromise.

"If you go into this and the only thing that can appease you is to put everything back the way it was, then nothing will ever get done," said Nellams.

I agree with mrmagoo. I've seen all kinds of people with disabled placards hanging from their rear-view mirrors ABUSE disabled spots and with no problem, get out of there cars and walk normally. I even saw one lady walk all over Fred Myer and come out carrying bags of heavy groceries to her car. The woman in the news story is truly handicap and deserves accessibility, but even her potential spots are being abused by the lazy. As for me, I'm a Multiple Sclerosis patient since 2002. I don't have a disabled placard, I won't get one until it is absolutely necessary, and I feel contempt for anyone who abuses that privilege.

70% of people with a disabled parking permit don't need one ! they were just good a feeding their doctor a bunch of bull cause they are to fat and lazy to walk from a parking space that might be 2 blocks away at most

Yeah . . . compromise on paralysis . . . . Now that's an interesting concept . . . . I wonder if accessibility laws have anything to say about the siting of handicapped parking spots.

Lose 100 lbs, you'd be able to walk again.

...compromise...ok, you accept 50% of the disabilities of the disabled public, see what its actually like to be in a wheelchair, no use of your legs at all , then , we will talk compromise...
