SEATTLE -- Wildlife officials report at least 8 sea lions have been found shot to death in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks.

Both the Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the deaths. The bodies of seven sea lions were recently found on the Nisqually River, all apparently shot. On Monday, a sea lion was found dead on West Seattle's Lincoln Park beach.

Bullets were found in each of the bodies of the sea lions. A necropsy performed on the sea lion found in West Seattle also revealed the animal endured a shark bite, and had twisted intestines, according to the animal protection group Seal Sitters.

Investigators said they do not know who killed the sea lions. The penalty for poaching a sea lion could range from fees to possible jail time.

One of the sea lions found on the Nisqually River was a Stellar sea lion, federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. The one found in West Seattle was a California sea lion, which are a protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Almost two years ago, five sea lions were found shot to death on West Seattle beaches. In that instance, the Humane Society offerred a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Thank Humane Society of America for not allowing USFWS to go ahead with their well-thought-out, well-researched management plan. Vigilantism is what you get when you do not allow wildlife managers to manage. And to the guys blaming the tribe: you're as clueless as these "animal rights" crybabies.

Tribes are sovereign nations within our borders. They have their own sets of laws that apply to them. During certain activities, like fishing according to their treaty right, our laws do not apply. Not all laws apply to them.

Are indians exempt from our laws?

OK, I get the part about Endangered Species Act protection. Why are overpopulated species of sea lions federally protected under the Marine Mammal Act?

I believe the ignorant don't have the capacity to use good judgement or common sense in decision making. Their first and only act is always an act of violence. In plain speaking terms they're mentally challenged or in other words... A Meat Head.... So Whats Your Beef ?

ToddRoll? Especially if they regularly eat the fish that live in our toxic waters!

One might imagine it's just a matter of time before fisherman are found dead in the water.

Personally I can't find a reason to be upset. I just hope the person who did it does not get caught.

Sorry, I'm not buying any fish stories that any of the comments that have been made. The seals did not cause any problems....man did! Commerce said "we need more salmon!" and of course, then came the hatcheries to provide for those wanting more salmon, thus, more seals because of the salmon harvests. One occation, in particular, was the year that the orient no longer needed or wanted our low life chum and the sound was littered with dead salmon for weeks on end, but there was an over abundance of returning seals and their multitude of off-spring feeding off the carcuses. We created the problems, it's the eco-system that we should be worried about.

Not steelheaders, as the Nisqually really has no remaining steelhead run left. Most likely it was tribal netters, and I believe that they have the ability, legally, to cull seals and sea lions, just like the salmon farms. Could be wrong, but those are the folks who are on the river at this moment.

I have to admit.. it is extremely frustrating when more than once, we have been reeling in a salmon and the seal steals it away.... they just follow the boat around waiting to take the salmon away from you when you catch one... and are seasons are already small, so we are not over fishing... we hate them, but also are not doing anything about it...thats the way it is.

@CrichSeattle "Local" Seattleite here. Sea lions are a very small part of the Salmon problem in the PNW. If you want to help the Salmon population, then help us prevent over fishing. Or better yet, help us solve the problems that dams pose to salmon, because fish ladders are not a good solution. In any case, randomly, inhumanely shooting sea lions is not a good solution. Even if the sea lions did cause a noticeable change in salmon population (which they don't) they should be trapped/killed in a humane way. Not shot on the beach. My guess is that the native net fishermen are smart enough to know that killing a dozen or so sea lions isn't going to make enough of a difference anyway, and the real culprit is just a sick, twisted, nutjob with a gun and too much free time.

Sir_Real , then go move somewhere that doesn't have marine life (like maybe Gingrich's moon colony).

College kid, maybe you aren't from around here, but the California sea lions are here because their food supply has been wiped out by overfishing in California. These California sea lions and also stellars find a captive population of salmon circling the waters outside the entrances of rivers and especially the Hiram Locks. It's easy pickings for these nimble mammals, and no matter how many times they have tried over the years to trap and remove the creatures, they return faster than the vans that have released then down south. With the fragile recovery of the salmon populations always in doubt and the restrictions on commercial and sport fishing anglers becoming tighter and tighter each year, locals really do resent non-native marine mammals decimating the wild fish populations. If I had to guess who was shooting them, I would guess it's the native net fishermen. They most resent the sea lions and ignore any federal regulations as an irritation rather than a deterent.

Why would someone shoot it? The only somewhat logical reasoning is that maybe it was suffering from its other injuries, and someone put it out of it's misery. Even then, you'd think they would have called authorities about it. Any other reason is completely inexcusable.
