SEATTLE - Electric car owners in Seattle can now fuel up at a station that produces some of its own power.

North Coast Electric cut the ribbon Wednesday on its new electric car charging station that also collects and stores solar power.

The station is the first of its kind in Seattle and will soon hook up batteries that will store power generated from solar panels atop the canopy over the pumps.

Another company, Grid Mobility, of Kirkland, will then manage that power so it can pulled onto the grid when demand is highest for green power. The idea is to move electric cars and green power away from electricity generated by coal- and natural gas-powered electric plants.

"We believe we should not move our transportation from fossil fuels in the tank to fossil fuels to generate electricity," said Grid Mobility President James Holbery.

The solar panels can only produce a small amount of the electricity customers will get when they power up at the station, but advocates, including Seattle City Light, feel it's a step in the right direction. Several more stations are planned for the area.

I might add it's only good for a little time each year, why not CA. FL. NV. etc? Or is it just north coast?

Hi chevelle70ss, North Coast Electric said they did not plan to bill users for the electricity. Given its location, I would suspect that by far the most common users would be their own plug-in fleet vehicles. For the few others that stop by, the amount that North Coast is spending is small. (You could argue free, if it comes from the solar panel, although of course they had to pay up front for the system). The station is fairly unique; it seems to have other ways to pay for itself. One is the generation of electricity from the solar panels, which NCE can either use or sell to the grid. Another is buying and storing energy at night when it's cheap, and re-selling it to the grid during the day when it is more valuable. I think there's also a way to get carbon credits from the clean energy, although I am not familiar with the details.

Nothing is free, Chevelle. We live in a global commons. Obviously the subtraction from the commons is catching up to our species at an alarming rate. There is no free ride on this planet, only the tragic assumption..................

As it is a step in the right direction (i guess) are they going to charge for the "free" power they are passing onto the users? i dont see it working if they do.
