Rising gasoline prices affecting daily habits

SEATTLE -- Whether it's driving less or going out of their way to find a cheaper gas station, some Seattlites are already changing their daily habits to make room for a few more dollars worth of gas.

"If I could buy something a little cheaper and a little more generic, I might go with that," said Lisa Winston, who was filling up at the Shell Station at 15th and Pike in Seattle.  On Sunday, that location saw one of the highest premium gas prices in town -- $4.17 a gallon.

But even near SW Barton and 15th St SW, where $3.47 a gallon for regular was among the cheapest deals in Seattle, the pumps were still dispensing distress.

"Aw, it's too much, it's a lot, a lot of money," said Kirk Cieszkiewicz.

Nationwide, the spike in oil prices threatens to affect everything from food prices to air travel. The White House Chief of Staff said they are considering tapping strategic oil reserves to stabilize prices, but stress that's only done in rare emergencies.

Part of their concern is that prices going up at the pump could harm the fragile economic recovery.

In just the last month gas prices in Washington state have jumped almost 40 cents a gallon. On Sunday, the average price of regular unleaded was close to $3.65 a gallon.  That's almost 20 cents higher than the national average, which was about $3.50.

Analysts said the unrest in Libya and elsewhere in Africa have contributed to U.S. gas prices that just posted their second-highest two-week gain ever, second only to the increase that came post-Hurricane Katrina.

"I think it's getting a little ridiculous," said Tony Bradshaw, who said he was "eating less, driving less, yeah."

"I drive less, I walk  more," said Cieszkiewicz, who works near the gas station. "Instead of driving the mile between my house and here, I walk a lot."

Washington still has not hit the record high though, set back in July 2008, when gas averaged $4.35 statewide and $4.39 a gallon in Seattle.

Really! I have seen Diesel at over 4.00 dollars a gallon and I'am glad that do not drive a truck. It also ridiulaslas to pay any more than buy gas for your car.

I don't like the twitter like material above the "old style" comments. The messages are too short, the font is too big.

Oh well, the profits of the oil multinationals who could care less whether we live or die and that of "investors (speculators who add NO VALUE for their expense) have taken precedence over all the other industries of Amerika before - high gas prices triggered the last collapse. I s'pose going without 90% of the rest of what we buy is just dandy - as long as the rich get richer.

You don't need King5 to tell you it's "pain at the pump." Just go to the gas station. An electric car is as cost efficient as $0.50 a gallon gas. But the respondent is right, the power comes from somewhere--it's just more efficient per BTU as gas. How about natural gas cars, that's a tested & tried alternative, what's its equivalent in gasoline cost/gallon? I'm telecommuting more, driving less, lucky I have that option. We have two four-cylinder cars which is also lucky but it's still $60 a tankful.

The more EV and hybrid vehicles there are ... there more gas is left for me. FYI .. diesel can be cheaper to produce than gas ..but our refineries aren't setup for that. Diesel is around 30% cheaper than gas in Europe.

@taylorwood, there IS real tension in the middle east now. Darth and the arrogant frat boy manufactured tension in the middle east and prices went to $4.00/ gallon even when they were pumping UNMETERED oil out of Iraq for their cronies. That is the difference.

uponstilts - - your question- the cheapest gas type to make is the highest priced at the pump (Diesel)? - - They will do your story right after they write the one about Why is it that Whatcom County Washington has 2 oil refineries that get crude from the Alaska Pipe line and about 15% or less from OPEC, and yet they pay some of the highest prices. The explanation so far is that they have to truck it out of the area and then back in... that make any sense to any one? - Their poor planning, means we pay more. Any sense? Any one?

@sourdoughjoe- I don't have a electric vehicle. I own a Suburban which does pretty good at fuel for its size. There are plenty of ways to gather electricity other than coal. I'm far from green but would like to become more green as it becomes more re dilly available.

@Sir_Real: Are you serious?!?!? You on the left are as nutty as they come. So now it's because Republicans took control of one branch of the federal government, as to why gas prices are rising so rapidly?lol I guess you no longer can assert that Darth Vader Cheney, and big oil Bush are lining the pockets of their oil buddies in Texas. Might the cause of these rising prices be due to the fact that there is SERIOUS tension in the middle east right now? And it certainly doesn't fit the lefts narrative, and / or mantra any longer to blame Bush / Cheney, so these sorts of articles are far and few between. We certainly aren't hearing the daily drumbeat of "pain at the pump", like King5 constantly aired during Bush's tenure.

Diesel should be cheap as it takes less refining. However, the greenies hate diesel because of the sulphur so they only want it produced in modest amounts. They're refining diesel to the point where, in a few years, your car will probably not run on it. Just like motor oils, the'vey removed many of the additives (without little to no info to us) and peoples engines are failing. They're going to get you out of your car one way or another! (BTW, they care nothing about poverty, the economy, or whether you eat because you produce emissions too).

Could someone please do a story or at least answer a question as to why the cheapest gas type to make is the highest priced at the pump (Diesel). Is this just another political move to rip off the public with the demand amount? Seems like when I changed to Biodiesel, it went sky-high because it suddenly became popular, then diesel started climbing above regular. I suppose if I change to one of the hybrids, that too will start increasing just as rapidly. If I was 20 years younger and in better shape, I would bicycle everywhere, as it is I now have a motorcycle, hope I don't get by one of those HUGE diesel trucks. I drive a diesel VW New Beetle when I drive a car. Thank you, (where did my pair of stilts go, I need them now)

@monroe527 said on March 7, 2011 at 8:24 AM "Don't you believe if they went by supply and demand the price of each barrel would just continue to rise anyways. I think they use any reason in the world to just raise the price of crude oil. Hopefully this will hurry up the production of a good electric vehicle." As has been stated previously, where in the heck do you think electrical power comes from? Thin air? Are you using solar or hydro power to recharge your pathetic electric vehicle? You probably think you are being "green" just because you plug it in overnight and pay you exhorbitant electric bill. Wait until the Centralia coal-fired steam plant either goes down or is forced to convert to natural gas or maybe fuel-oil (diesel). Want to see your electric bills go sky high? Better have a good savings account because if you own a total electric car, you had better have thousnds in the bank when you have to replace all of those spendy batteries.

Read the fine print on the EV's Maximum mileage is 100. That is figured on a flat surface at 30 mph. It does not count hills and freeway driving. I put blame on our government for the high gas prices. They will not drill , they will not build new refineries. We have the technology to turn garbage into low sulphur base crude. This situation is BS. If our government was really dedicated to improving the financial situation they have the means and the tools to do it but won't just so they can control the people. Great hope and change.

Gas is high, that sucks. But electric vehicles or hybrids wont help because they only make you think they are good. Electric vehicles are charged at home, the majority of electricity is made by burning coal, which has to be transported which takes fuel from oil, the mining equipment used to get it takes fuel from oil. Therefore you will end up spending more for electricity because their costs will get higher saving you no money at all. Hybrids are the same way, good at first, until you have to fix it. By then it will cost more to fix it then its worth, junk it and start over. Of course car companies know how to produce a small fuel efficient car, but no one wants to buy one because they don't have all the fancy extras that people MUST have.

The Former occupant of the white house was in oil as we all know. The higher the price of oil got, the more money he made. That is proven. Nonetheless- at present the price of oil is not what it was when he was in that office. Remember the "electric car" that was leased in California? Well, all those cars that were great, long range electric cars were ALL destroyed. The Knowlage of how to build them has been around for a while. The issue is, GM,Ford etc- are now looking into those hybrids-by demand of the US govt. If it were up to them, they would not. If gas prices reach 5 dollars a gallon, well I will stop driving. My car gets about 25 on the Highway so I cant complain. I do think that The US should dril for oil at home. If lybia or any other nation rich in oil goes to war it should have then no effect on the cost of gas here at home. we drill our own, and process our own. Forget shipping it overseas and returning it to the USA at a higher price.

It's weird how gas prices were high in 2008, then liberals get elected and they went down to low numbers up until conservatives take the house over and they go right up again.

Progressive policy to block domestic drilling is killing our economy. Alaska has more oil than Libya but progressives would rather see our tourism, industry, and citizens suffer than increase the flow.

Who cares. Quit complaining and just buy 40 mpg vehicle already. I love driving my 3/4 ton truck, but it's time we, as a society, think about driving vehicles that are not overkill. How many time do you see a giant SUV on the road, filled with people or stuff? A truck that actual is hauling something? If are simply commuting from point A to B, lets drive an appropriate vehicle for the task. Those who can afford to waste money and resources by driving the monstrosities, that's fine, it's thier right. But if it's only a status thing you are concerned with (driving a 4 ton Bling Bling), then grow up!

Nothing's going to really change in the US until gas hits a sustained price of $5.00 a gallon. It's funny to hear all the people complaining about gas prices when many of them are paying $20.00 a gallon for thier coffee at Starbucks or thier bottled "vitamin" water. There's still tons of single-occupant commuters in their 4X4 F250's and other sub-20 MPG vehicles every morning on I-5. They don't ALL need those trucks for thier job's.

We have our tax and spend governor and legislature to blame for this. With one of the highest gas taxes in the country. And for what do we owe this great honor? Upcoming tolls on a bridge that was paid for 25 years ago.

It's market manipulation. The countries in turmoil now make up about 10% of world oil supply. These price increases are Wall Street generated. The Chinese and Indians don't exponentially increase their consumption overnight.

This shouldn't be too surprising to anyone. The gas price increase in 2008 was a great warning to all those with hopped-up 4v4's and huge armada SUV's that your costs for using this limited resource was eventually going to climb significantly. The huge demand from hundreds of millions of new Chinese and Indian car drivers has been predicted for years now as well. If you bought a vehicle in the last three years that gets poor mileage(under 30), then you have only yourself to blame.

It is all speculation and you have entities like pension funds buying oil futures. They should make the rule, if you buy oil, you're going to get it delivered to you. This will take the day traders out of it. Nice comment IFLY,It take it you fly a 737? You should be concened, remember what happened to the airlines last time? Maybe we need to lay off overpaid pilots and all stop flying for awhile.

It is all speculation the price of a barrel of oil is not based on supply and demand. But rather what may happen in the future to the supply. The world governments just need to put an end to commodities trading to alleviate the problem. Go back to pricing by supply and demand.
