ISSAQUAH, Wash. – A witness says kids ran for cover under bleachers as a guman fired shots near Issaquah High School.

Police shot and killed the lone gunman. No one else was hurt.

The man, said to be in his 50s and from Maple Valley, was driving his car on Front Street when he stopped in the middle of the street, got out and started shooting, King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Urquhart said.

“A bullet went between me and my friend Tony. We started running and we could hear bullets bouncing off the concrete behind us,” said Shanae Hover.

The man proceeded to walk toward the elementary school and high school, where a youth football game was going on.

“Where we were alongside the elementary school we got shot at about nine times,” said Jason Gerth.

Police emptied the field and evacuated the stands filled with young football players and their families.

“They're huddled under the bleachers staying close together, scared out of their minds,” said Chase Hawkins.

“In my whole life I've never seen anything like this,” said Jack Hover.

The children that live in the house right next to Clark Elementary found themselves in the middle of gunfire.

“I was so scared, I was shocked and couldn't move, I heard the gunshot, I don’t know it was like a like and death situation so I ran inside as fast as I could,” said one boy.

Richard Denbey lives just a few doors down. When he heard a barrage of shots he went outside and saw a herd of teenagers, running toward him.

“Came sprinting down the street, terrified looks on their faces,” he said. “We hustled them into garage  and they were nearly sick to their stomachs with fear.”

David Korpi also saw that group of teens. He was at a church yard work party. He picked up a rock as a weapon and ran toward the chaos and ended up seeing a gunfight between the shooter and police.

"Saw one person off the side of a building and there was a number of shots around that person to probably make sure they were down,” he said.

Susan Waters said she got a frantic phone call from her 11-year-old daughter, who was cheering at a middle school game at Issaquah High.

“Saying there were shots fired and there were police everywhere and I’m really scared,” said Waters. “They locked everybody down, they were all safe immediately.

"Still terrifying," she said.

A couple who came to watch their nephew play football said they got caught in the gunman's crosshairs as they were leaving the school.

Leslie Olerich and her husband les say the man was coming up a walkway, 20 feet from their car, carrying two rifles and wearing dark camouflage.

"I would say we were very, very lucky,” said Olerich. “We could've been in the absolute wrong place at the wrong time ... if he was in that mood, we'd be dead."

The Olersichs quickly drove away and as they did so, the man flashed them a smile they describe as "Steven-King-esque."

Leif Steffny, who was at the gun range at the nearby Issaquah Sportsman’s Club, heard up to 60 shots.

Someone at the club called police and the club was told to cease firing to avoid confusion.

Steffny was able to capture the sound of multiple gunshots on video.

Police managed to surround the suspect on a service road. He was still firing his weapon when he was shot by police. He died at the scene.

At one point a sheriff's department sniper took to the air to be sure there were no other shooters.

“Our priority was to get him to stop moving, number one and to stop shooting, number two. We were able to do both of those," said Urquhart.

Several roads were closed for the investigation:

  • Second Avenue Southeast from Front Street South to East Sunset Way.
  • Front Street South from Second Avenue Southeast to Newport Way Northwest.

KING 5's Natasha Ryan and Eric Wilkinson contributed to this report.

I'm getting tired of outsiders coming into Issaquah and causing mayhem. I'm glad there wasn't any injuries or deaths in this horrible situation which has effected all of us in one way or another. Always have your guards up, because crime can occur anywhere at anytime! I salute Issaquah police department for their quick response and for keeping our city safe. It's nice to know that Issaquah High School, Skyline High School and Eastlake high school are located near a police station, which adds extra protection for our kids.

I think it's safe to say that this guy wasn't playing games. I seems he intended to die, but I think he was also intent on taking just about anyone with him. The curious part is the people driving away who he flashed a smile at. That is rather curious, don't you think? If he was so intent on shooting and killing, you would think he would have just lit them up instead of tipping his cap, smiling and saying, "isn't a beautiful day mam"

considering a number of witnesses reported the suspect firing and the rounds going past their head or hitting the ground around them, I think it's fair to say this guy was likely shooting "at" people. Fortunately at a distance, and was engaged before he close that distance and improve his accuracy. Nice work by the police of containing and silencing this threat. This could have been disastrous.

The US government sold the guns to Mexico so they could turn around and blame American citizens for somehow providing guns to Mexico. Once they "proved" the guns came from some unknown criminal US supplier(s), they would then move to tighten gun laws even further. Those gun sales were all about controlling you, not about money.

Well, @aziza, our own government illegally sold many of them to Mexican drug runners. Many came from Mexican military and police who went to work for the drug cartels. Others come from individual "straw purchases", where they use someone who isn't legally prohibited from owning a gun to buy it and send it - illegally, of course - over the border. And still others come from somewhere else entirely. What makes anyone think that eliminating legal gun ownership in this country will prevent people who do illegal things from finding another source? Laws are only effective on the people who obey them. Criminals, by definition, don't care about the law. Eliminating legal gun ownership only puts law abiding citizens at a disadvantage because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

A tip 'o the derby to the police for quickly snuffing out (no pun intended) this menace. Note to aziza, who said : "invalid? I have an honest question for you. You cited Mexico as a point with their crime and gun laws. Just where do you think the criminals get their guns?" They get them from the corrupt Mexican officials or from the international gun runners who have bribed their customs. Why spend $400 for a US AK-47 when they can get trucks full of surplus at $75 a pop? And . . .with all those headless corpses being dumped, they don't even need firearms. Why do you think we have the GunRunner scandal? obama and crew were trying to show that Mexican crime guns came from the US and all they did was get one of our Border Patrol murdered.

What could Joe and Jane Farmfolk have known about cities, towns or even nearby farms without communications technology? You think Mormons only recently began marrying children? That before YOU came along and NOTICED, that no Muslims castigated their women or beheaded an innocent? More locally, you REALLY think Life Was Better when Joe Average American didn't KNOW his gubmint tortured Guatemalan children, that serial killers could slaughter Native Americans with the full support of the US gubmint or that MDs could kill with impunity? What point in human history was devoid of pain, death, lunacy and misery? Show me an idyllic place & time and I'll show ya stilted information gathering. A lack of information is no reason to assume anything...

Everyone wants to know why the guy did it, but you have to accept that some people are simply nuts - there was no rational reason for doing what he did. And "serious mental health care" isn't necessarily the answer. You can have all the care in the world available, but it does not good if those who need it don't avail themselves of it, and you can't involuntarily commit them to the mental health care that is currently available unless they are proven to be a danger to themselves or others. If the first indication that they do pose such a danger is that they haul out a couple of guns and start shooting, there just isn't much you can do. Restricting gun ownership won't help. Some of the worst violent crime you'll find is just over the border in Mexico, where gun ownership is banned. Violent crime has also risen in Britain, where handguns are illegal. Enforce the gun laws already on the books, and don't unnecessarily restrict gun ownership by those who live within the law.

Hey davidandessi, Why do people need guns? So they don't have to show up to a gun fight with a rock. Seriously, if someone comes into my house with a gun (or my neighborhood, etc..), and the cops aren't around, I don't want to be defending myself with anything but a gun. And yes, it's lawful to protect people, even in this liberal state, with a gun. You lefties should consider that if guns are outlawed, the bad guys will still have guns since they don't obey the law anyway, and we, who are law-abiding citizens will have no way to protect ourselves in a situation like this.

The fact that he hit no one, absolutely no one, after pointing his gun at several people, but not shooting, tells me that, yes, this was suicide by cop. Some people who choose to commit suicide don't have the character to actually shoot themselves, (it's a sin to shoot yourself, make someone else do it for you), or perhaps he wanted his moment of fame. Maybe he was an anti-gunner who was suicidal and wanted to make a statement against gun ownership on his way out, thus didn't hurt anybody. We may never know. How moronic do you have to be to attribute this to the Tea Party though??

I am so very thankfull that he did not harm anyone. I do not usaully believe in miracles but this comes very very close. My daughter and my grandchildren live just up the hill from were this nightmare unfolded today. They need to find out what made this man do such a terrible thing. I do not believe it was suicide. He could have taken himself out, in the woods. I really think that many many thanks should go out to those who kept the children safe and to the police they all did a good job. I sometimes think this kind of thing could be prevented if we had a serious Mental Health Care system for the good of all of us.We may have even more of a need for this when our Veterans return. The Tea party is not to blame (ha ha). I will say that the stress that knowing they want to turn the American way of life into a rich get richer, poor be dammed, and middle class shut your mouth and pay your taxes kind of way of life, sends me over the edge sometimes. :(

Why oh Why do the reports of gunmen running rampant in this country NEVER , EVER, ASK and GET MAD at why on earth these lunatics get easy access to guns? Why do people need them ???? Give me one good reason (and don't say it's to shoot child collecting a ball from a strangers back-yard and rationalise by saying ' the person was trespassing ' ) There's no reason. What happened to responsible journalism. We live on the East-side and have children, and if there are these lunnies with guns in my area, why don't the media investigate this?

As a mom who was under the bleachers with her kids, I would like to give a heart-felt thanks to the police officers who helped us. As we left the football field-- I heard kid after kid say thank you. The officers were clear and knew exactly what to do to keep us safe. There were well over 100 people-- many of them kids-- close enough to the situation to hear clear, loud gunshots. Had the police not acted with authority, it could have been a different outcome. I hope more of us that were there speak out with our thanks. Those that were not there to hear the gunshots and see your kids cry, please pause a moment to consider it being your child on the football field when the police came in to protect you. I have never commented on anything before but am doing so now because the politics absolutely shock me. The kids had it right with their thanks.

Their timeliness was absolutely incredible! Great work, excellent law enforcement! As for the parent who grabed a rock to try and run into the middle of gun fire between police and the sniper, please do your community a favor and move. No one in their right mind would grab a rock hearing gun shots. As for the lady yelling at the police that she wanted to get her son, was uncalled for. A stupid move by her part could cost lives. She should move with the man with rock, it would help to keep Issaquah safer. The students did wonderful and appeared to hold their actions together to keep them safe. Kudos to the students!

I was travelling North on Front Street, at the light near the pool an abandoned siler Kia with California license plates was slowing traffic down because it was in the lane. As I thought about it, I realized that probably it was a stolen care and that someone had abandoned the vehicle. Minutes later sirens sounded, and more and more sirens, police cars etc. After about 15 minutes when I headed the other direction on Front Street the police had a man down on the ground in a turquoise shirt, they had him in cuffs. The police were doing a good job of handling the situation well. This man was not wearing camo. A side note, with respect to the gun range, this morning they held a Gun Safety Class and their own class was using the range, that has nothing to do with this shooting.
