RENTON, Wash. -- A parody of Renton police and other public officials posted on YouTube has triggered a criminal investigation into cyberstalking.

The chief says they discovered a series of cartoons on the Internet that not only embarrass and humiliate the people depicted, but also rises to the level of cyberstalking.

Many of the cartoons show animated versions of current and former members of the Renton Police Department, and reflect or distort real life incidents being investigated by internal affairs.

Renton police is trying to find out who made the cartoons.  One of the cartoons even mocks a department employee's right to free speech.

Renton Police Chief Kevin Milosevich says,"We ran the facts of this case by a prosecutor and they supported the information that met the definition of the crime, and were able to obtain a search warrant based on that information that was signed by a judge..."

"That's really not the way the cyberstalking law should be used," says Doug Honig, of the ACLU. He says posting the cartoons could be a personnel issue for the city of Renton, but not a crime.

"In general, you have a right to post parodies on the internet, even ones that people find very offensive," says Honig.

A total of nine videos were posted on YouTube.  Whoever made them would have to have access to internal affairs information.  The chief believes it is a member of someone closely related to his department.

This does reference the "Highlands" in Renton. So why is this cyberstalking? Who made up that idiotic charge?

I just figured it out! This is ANTISEC, the anonymous gang of hackers that just obtained thousands of internal police records. Now I can see why the search warrant was issued.

Just whatchesd the videos. If i was the chief of police or better the mayor, I would launch a full investigation into these allegation of police misconduct, and money fraud. Since I am someone who had seen first hand, the coruption of a police force (IE the lates 80's early 90's Carnation) this can cause the comunity to not vote your levvy in, and it sounds like the County police take your suspects and backup missing patrols, then they will take over the city law enforcement. there is goning to be more symapthy for the whistle blower than the invisgation into him. Time for a Police audit and vote of no confinadnce in the Renton Police force. Hopefully the good officers will be promoted to change the staus quo.

hahahahahahahahahaha......this is a riot, very funnny stuff! So what someone made a parody of an avatar in a police officers' uniform & a punk undercover. There was no mention of the Renton police department in this skit......Sorry but I think we still have first amendment right's in the U.S.A. Cyberstalking is like the young girl in the King County area that had very offensive photo's & her phone number posted on a Facebook page soliciting sex from boys by two little brats.

After watching the video, I'm sure the Renton Police department is headed for a very big lawsuit. That's not cyberstalking, it's free speech. It's parody. The judge and the police trying to stop this should be put in prison.

Since when did parody and comedy become a crime in the US? This is some sick and twisted stuff. The police, in their draconian actions to stop free speech, have demonstrated that the videos correctly display the attitude of the Renton police department.

Okay, lemme get this straight. The Renton police are investigating who made these videos because they are too close to the truth. And no one is investigating the Renton police department. Sounds right.

Whoever in Renton thinks posting those parodies is a crime should be tossed out of office, loose his/her pension, and be banned form practicing law anywhere in the world. The truth hurts, if you're a member of the Renton PD. LMAO

Sounds like a bad time to own a comedy club or be a comedian in Renton. It's really messed-up when thugs have guns, and badges. You morons made the bed, now sleep in it. I have less-and-less respect for law enforcement everyday. Pretty soon I'll be rooting for the (supposed) bad guys.

The chief should never have mentioned it, as it is he has given it legs. Often stereotypes have some basis of fact.

Renton Police are not the only ones being parodied; go search on YouTube for "Ottawa police parody" and you'll find another cartoon that is obviously by the same people.

@roblh31, the ACLU is the quasher of individual human rights. While they might make a flowery show of an ordeal, They are loathe to put the smack-down on the Establishment which largely funds it. Citizen action is needed. Dozens of polite but stout-hearted folks need to walk into the mahogany-lined caves of these creeps, and tell them they are wrong.

What kind of a judge signs such a warrant to allow a cartoonists residence to be completely ransacked for no other reason than to shut someone up? There has to be someone looking into this judge questioning this decision and the cozy relationship that garners such a warrant based on nothing more than hurt pride when forced to deal with their own horrible history of lies, abuse and corruption. What kind of accountability do we have if this judge isn't looked into? Seems to be the common factor among the Seattle, Bellevue, King County, Kent, Federal way and Tacoma police too. This is all costing the taxpayers Millions and Millions. What a racket.Outrageous! This is free speech of disgraceful events DOCUMENTED in court filings, internal investigations and news reports. Are they trying to deter anyone from discussing FACTUAL events in cartoon form? It is our right to inform the public. Some write letters, some draw pictures. This cartoonist will be in for a very large settlement.

As far as I'm concerned, they deserve whatever they get. Their police department is a mess. I lived in Renton for a little under a year because I didn't get the memo about it being such a pit beforehand. I had reoccurring problems with my neighbors and I contacted the Renton PD several times for help. Not only did they make false promises and contradict each other, they even insinuated there was no problem and ultimately I had to move because they did nothing for me. I was highly disappointed in all but one or two of the Renton police I met.

I guess it's different when it comes to "Internal Affairs" and the police department is mocked, because at work, we do it to each other all the time. That "Higher Standard" that the police is held up to, puts them at a sterile level, attaining prude status and a sense of humor is, OMG....forbidden!!! Robots and machines that cannot laugh or smile! My opinion? Witty and funnier than sh*&!
