KENT, Wash. – The Red Cross is helping several families after an apartment fire Sunday.

The fire started at about 11:30 p.m.

When fire crews got to the building in the 23800 block of 30th Ave. S. they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a third floor unit.

Firefighters say the location of the fire made it more difficult to get to, but it was fortunate there were no units above the point of the fire.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading, but several units were damaged by water.

The people living in the unit where the fire started were able to escape just with the clothes they were wearing.

"There was a couple at home, watching TV and were unaware of how it started and they actually struggled a little bit to get out of the unit," said Randy Droppert with the Kent Fire Dept.

The investigation into the fire is still ongoing.

Years ago when Mt St Helens blew up, my husband got help from the Red Cross, and had to pay it back later. Be careful how much help you get from them cause they will get you later (doesn't matter if you donate financially or with blood literally, they are going to get what they gave you back). They are very generous with their help (not)
