Obama rallies support for Murray in Seattle

SEATTLE -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday stumped for Sen. Patty Murray in Seattle on a three-day campaign swing for endangered Democrats, accusing Republicans of thwarting efforts to help small business owners by repeatedly blocking tax breaks for them.

Obama arrived at Boeing Field at 11 a.m., greeted by Murray and other lawmakers. Obama then made his first stop at the Grand Central Bakery and Cafe in Pioneer Square, where he met with local business leaders over lunch.

He burst in shouting, "Hey, guys" to employees, then bought himself a turkey sandwich, a side dish, a salad and a bottle of water. With Murray at his side, he sat at a wooden table with three local business owners who had upbeat stories to tell.

He hoped their successes underscore his broader message that the sluggish economy is rebounding thanks to resilience and federal support, although more than 14 million remain out of work.

"Nobody here is getting too fat and happy. Everybody here is operating on very lean margins," he said afterward. "In the same way they're looking out for their employees, we need to be looking out for small businesses."

Commerce Secretary and former Washington Governor Gary Locke was also traveling with the president and participated in the discussion.

After meeting with the small business leaders, Obama gave a brief public speech in Pioneer Square about the economy, before heading off to two fundraisers for Murray - one at the Westin Hotel, followed by a private fundraiser at the Seattle home of RealNetworks founder Rob Glaser.

Helping small business has become the main focus of his campaign efforts to help Democrats in upcoming November midterm elections.

Small businesses account for two out of every three jobs created. Obama is backing a Democratic bill that would give small businesses a variety of tax breaks and incentives, including easier access to loans, deductions for small businesses and an elimination of capital gains taxes on investments in small businesses.

But Republicans repeatedly have blocked the legislation, suggesting it is misguided and would fall short of truly helping small businesses.

"They won't even let it go to a vote," Obama said. But he said the bill would be the first item of business when Congress returns from its summer recess next month.

"We've got a stake in helping our small businesses succeed. ... Our economic recovery depends on it," the president said.

He spoke on the day of Washington's primary. Murray is on the ballot and was expected to advance, as was the principal Republican contender, Dino Rossi. Murray is a member of the Senate Democratic leadership and her contest is being closely watched by Democrats around the nation.

At the fundraisers for Murray, both Obama and Murray sounded a familiar Democratic theme in a talk to supportive Democrats at a fundraiser -- that Bush administration policies had driven the economy into deep recession and record deficits.

"Never go back to the failed policies of George W. Bush, where my opponents want to go," Murray said.

And Obama again portrayed Republicans as naysayers.

"It's going to take time to bring back 8 million jobs (lost since the recession began in December 2007). Anyone who tells you otherwise is just looking for your vote," he said.

Much of the estimated record $1.5 trillion deficit for 2010 is due to reduced tax revenues because of the recession and government spending programs done under both the George W. Bush and Obama administrations to rescue the financial system and prop up the economy. The federal deficit was just $162 billion as recently as 2007.

Aboard Air Force One on the way to Seattle, White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said Obama believes Democrats "will hold on to both the House and the Senate" despite a stumbling recovery and polls showing vast voter discontent.

In the Washington primary, the top two vote-getters for the Senate seat, regardless of their party, will advance to the general election. Murray was vying for her fourth term.

But Republican Rossi mounted a serious campaign.

Murray's ability to lure federal money to projects in her state has helped her win re-election before, but this year she is fighting against a growing voter distaste for the level of spending and debt adding up in Washington, D.C.

Obama, meanwhile, is choosing more ominous language to describe his vision of the leadership that Republicans would offer should they win control of the House or Senate. He characterizes that prospect as a reckless return to the past.

"They're offering fear and they're offering amnesia," Obama told an elite fundraiser in Los Angeles that generated $1 million for Democratic candidates for Congress. "They are counting on the notion that you won't remember what happened when they were in charge. I think the American people do remember."

Obama left Seattle around 3:45 p.m. from Boeing Field to Columbus, Ohio, where he'll attend more fundraising events there. He'll then head to Miami on Wednesday before returning to the White House.

I'm suprised that he had the time to squeeze this in between Lebron James and Paul McCartney and vacationing at Marhta's Vinyard. Just enough time to support a muslim construction at ground zero. Obama you are a sack! Take Pelosi with you when your first and only term is done. Thanks alot for the unemployemt rates that continue to grow. How long can you continue to blame you un-productive term on Bush? I don't think you need to be told where you can shove your "hope and change".

I read through a bunch of the comments... I wonder if you fruitcakes re-read what you post.... I'm amazed that in as self proclaimed an "educated" citizenry as seattlites claim to be, that they blatantly ignore the obviouse in favor of some fruitcake pipe dream than can't and never will materialize under that feckless, incompetent, in over his head, squatter in the White House.... Everything he does is either a collosal disaster or misdirection from that disaster, by making straw man arguements that you fruitcakes click heals and salute, as soon as he runs it up the flag pole, regardless of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary..... You might wanna start taking stock of exactly what liberalism has actually put in your pocket as opposed to what it has actually taken out, I'm sure you won't be nearly as devote as followers as you seem to be now... xDDDD

Obama and Murray are two peas in a pod. Neither can ever tell the truth about anything. Both are Marxist's who want to confiscate the producer's income and wealth (not their own of course since neither produce anything except hot air) to redistribute to their favored groups-unions, lawyers, homosexuals, men-hating/baby-killer women, criminals, and terrorist's (foreign and domestic).

Obama has no shame. He and his wife are either on vacation or stumping for hacks like Murray. War spending is at an all time high, while Americans need jobs and job training. Illegal and unconstitutional signing statements that he said as a candidate, that he would never use signing statements. Now, they are one of his favorite abuses of power. (for those of you who are in the dark, google signing statements) King 5 would never explain what signing statements are, and that they are illegal. King 5 and other news sources, want to keep your minds focused on stories about Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Knox instead of reporting to you what your leaders are doing to you. The politicians and companies like Boeing and the other military industrial complex criminals are bleeding you to death, from the pictures of Obama's visit, you would think that everything is going great in America.

It is NOT the Republicans stopping small business growth! It is the Democrats. They think government jobs are growing the economy. They just don't get it.....coming to Seattle and campaining for Murray is NOT going to win her another term....she needs to give it up. We do not need another term of her and we certainly do not need another term of him. Small business paying horribly increased taxes (and this IS going to hit us and soon) is not creating jobs.....it is losing more jobs. We small business owners cannot hire people if the government is taxing us more and more. This is ludicrous!

Lets not forget, I-5 gets shut down, inconveniencing those taxpayers, halting transportation of goods and people. Hopefully no one loses their job for being late due to the traffic jam he created.

The first thing these fundraisers should pay for is the expense of the PEOPLE'S airplane.

How did this undocumented Al-Kenyan get elected in the first place? America is surely in decline, Helter Skelter too.

What King5 should be asking is whether the President should be using tax payer money to fly around campaigning for people. Maybe he should stay in DC and I don't know, figure out how to fix the economy, cut spending drastically.
