Poll:
Should libraries filter out adult content on computers?

SEATTLE – A Seattle mother is speaking out after spotting a man viewing porn on a Seattle Public Library computer in plain view for everyone – including her 10-year-old daughter.

Julie Howe tells The Seattle Times the computer was located next to the popular DVD section at the Lake City branch.

When she approached librarians about it, Howe says she was told that it's library policy to not censor people’s access to information. The only exception is on computers in the children’s section, which are filtered for content.

A library spokesperson says the library is considering moving the DVD section somewhere else in order to cut down on inadvertent viewing of computer screens.

Want to know what happened when Howe approached the man who was watching porn? Read more at The Seattle Times.

caerleon: Sound is omni-directional, while sight is focused. Librarians are focused on the omni-directional to be ejected.

dakotanative: You obviously are from North or South Dakota. Maybe you have not been here long. Having sex in front of a window, or running around naked with your curtains open is NOT illegal in WA !!! I quoted that from a 911 call.

This is no different than having a sex act going on on your front window, or running around naked in your house with your curtains open. You will get arrested. This is worthy of a 9-11 call. Kids are being exposed illegally.

Did her mother never teach her that it's rude to look over other people's shoulders?

In your example, that might not be a hate crime but the subsequent assult of youth might be.

I find it interesting that we are talking about first amendment rights at the library and on this very forum. A forum that is run by a newspaper, a champion of the first amendment, heavily censors the comments on this very forum. Not for breaking any of the bylaws, but because they don’t fit into the editors agenda.

Librarians are notorious for asking people to please be quiet - are they not? If Sound can be distracting, then why not Sight? Why would one sensory experience have more liberties than the other? If someone started speaking out load at the library, launching into some kind of a misogynist diatribe - wouldn't a librarian ask them to stop or leave? Why is viewing something different? If an Aryan Youth purposefully went to a library, in a largely black neighborhood, and started viewing graphic videos of the KKK lynching black people - would that be considered a hate crime?

I think the city should pay for computers in the local X-Rated video stores. I may need to get online while watching some porn.

Yeah, no kidding. Move the computers at tax payer's expense?!? People, this is ILLEGAL ACTIVITY in a public location. Yes, there are laws that support preventing the viewing of this material in the public view. This is our library people, if the library won't uphold the law (and shame on them for not supporting the public) then the police should be called and the person arrested because he was BREAKING THE LAW. There are reasons for such laws. Whatever "I have the right to view it" go home and watch it in front of your own minor children. This is where kids go to research their papers and do schoolwork. Don't move the computers... then that "hidden" location is where your kids are going to have to go look up stuff. Please use some common sense. I say mail the libraries, and your state representatives. We pay for the "public" library, shouldn't it be a safe place? I for one would not want that material in my view let alone every child who happens to be wandering around in the library.

Interesting that a adult store with x's on the marquee is banned because it hurts the children, but allowing the kids to view stuff not allowed in the adult store is ok.

Adult content is always censored from pubic viewing. It's hidden in Adult book stores or discreetly covered up in convenience stores. So it would seem reasonable the library would either put the computers in a more private setting or make the adult content unavailable.

Freedom ain't free folks. We all have to compromise to live in our society. This guy in the blue jacket is an idiot, but I applaud the Seattle library's policy. It might not be popular, but it's correct.

Well, baz, this is not the forum for health care, but since you brought it up. Maybe we shouldn't force the leeches of society to by health insurance. Instead we will reward those that do. Let's make it a two thousand dollar tax real for the responsible people that do by insurance. No penalty for not buying. Just like marriage or kids. You choose to do it, you benefit. Decide not too, no penalty.

What does this say about where our society is headed? On one hand we are being forced by the Obama administration to buy health insurance and on the other they claim they can not sensor this filth from the plain view of children in a public library. If this is the kind of change that an amoral society brings with it. The government can keep the change!

Since the library can choose what books to buy, can it not choose what web pages to subscribe to? Could having its own server or web site before it reaches the library work? The library could tap into its own web server that carries things the library would like to have. That would not take away peoples right, as it wouldn't be there to begin with. heehee my first reaction upon reading this story.. grab a dozen friends and some popcorn and sit around the man and just like it was his living room. Free speech means we can talk and distract and point out the man's bad taste in woman. Come on over to my library... I'm creative :) I had children :)

You want religion out of government, you got it. Atleast the Parkland library has the screens set down in the table and have screens that are hard to see if you are not in the chair. It is great that we have the right to do this in public. It is sad that people actually take advantage of the opportunity.

Nice, now our public libraries have turned into those slimy peep show booths in the red light district. I wouldn't use the computers in a public library without bleaching down the computer and cubicle- yuck! Takes a real pathetic and desperate individual to view this in a public library-
