TACOMA, Wash. - Tacoma Police and the Tacoma School District have launched a crackdown on disruptive bus riders.
Beginning today, undercover police officers will be joined by uniformed Pierce Transit police, security officers and service supervisors in what's being called "Not On Our Bus."
They will be riding on the buses and conducting spot checks at bus stops and boarding areas near high schools. They'll be taking a "zero tolerance" approach on any unlawful or disruptive conduct on the bus routes, at transit centers and at stops near certain high schools.
Emphasis will be given on transit routes 1, 2, 10, 11, 16, 42, 51 and 53 and near Foss High School, Lincoln H.S., Mt. Tahoma H.S., Oakland H.S., SAMI, Stadium H.S. and Wilson H.S.
Some of the things not tolerated on buses are:
- No smoking or drinking
- Playing music without earphones
- No loud or raucous behavior
- No littering
- No skates or skateboards
Riders who break transit conduct codes can face a possible $1,000 fine and barred from riding a bus for 90 days.
Last year a similar crackdown saw nearly 70 people thrown off the bus for bad behavior.
