SEATTLE -- Air passengers on a Horizon Airlines flight to Seattle are happy to be on the ground after an engine shut down in mid-flight Thursday night.

A passenger recorded video of the engine on his cell phone shortly after take-off from Portland International Airport. The video shows the propeller coming to a stop after the engine cuts out.

The pilot turned the plane around and landed safely at Portland International Airport.

Passengers said it was an experience they'll never forget.

"This huge explosion, then all of the sudden everything stopped and it got totally quiet and then everyone started to panic and every phone was out," said Jenny Allen, passenger. "We're just thankful to be back."

Passengers not only recorded video, they also phoned their loved ones.

Horizon Air is investigating what caused the engine to shut down.

no passengers were on ther cell phones making phone calls to their "loved' ones. and, yes, this person should NOT have been video taping. looking at the proppeller, he was probably in about row 5 or 6, which isn't the easiest to see when both flight attendants are secure in the jumpseat.

Good job Horizion Pilots. Another day at the office for well trained pilots.

The plane is a de Havilland Dash 8-400, in case anyone's wondering.

A huge explosion would have taken the engine off the wing. I'm sure there was a "noise' but huge explosion? Also these planes as are most multi engine aircraft are designed to fly on one engine and it did. Look out the window and you will see the engine prop is "feathered" to reduce drag which is in the first part of the checklist. The pilot and co-pilot on this flight did exactly what they are trained to do.

People = if cell phones were a REAL threat in the air you wouldn't be allowed on the plane with it.

I thought that on a twin engine plane like a dash8, when one engine quits, the other one takes you to the scene of the wreck! Ahh professional pilots and all that redundant training.....

traveldoc - it was a multi engine until one quit, then it was a single engine. Good job to the crew. It isn't as easy to pull off as one poster made it sound.

So if you are in an emergency it's ok to disregard the safetly rule of ALL electronics shut off? Humans are idiots.

@traveldoc Really? The way you type makes you sound like a stuck up jack@**. "Portland International Airport" should help you out quite a bit. Did you watch the video? I don't think planes have one engine on the right side only....loool

These planes are tested to make sure that they can sustain flight if an engine dies. If you are cruising down the runway and see an engine shut off, you have a reason to be concerned. If one engine dies in flight, it is no big deal until another dies.

not having read this story, I wonder about details. "the propeller" coming to a stop implies a single engine aircraft, as does the silence described. This story is thus incomplete. was this a multi engine or single engine aircraft? the story implies a single engine.

I honestly don't get the point of all these stories. All they do is inflate what we think is a "disaster" in the air. For example, people calling loved ones. Why were they doing that? There was no reason to really believe the flight is in danger. Any passenger airplane with more than one engine can easily fly with one or two engines out. If they are at altitude, they can even make a relatively safe landing with all engines out. From what it seems in the story, no one was ever in any real danger.

@scoty: The pilot was only doing what he is trained to do. It's his job, and it's the absolute minimum you expect under the circumstances.

I was so worried that we would crash land and there would be no more Cornflakes in the pantry when I got home. I closed my eyes, called for my trusty dog and we started praying to our gods, we have different gods. He prays to JackInTheBox , I pray to "Burger KIng", and then I heard a scary noise, it was my cat and woke up from a nightmare. I got up and fed the cat and dog.

Next... Why would this be news any more then anything else? Now days anyone with a cell phone records how much toliet paper is left on the roll just in case they run out....

Maybe him using his cell phone on the flight shut down the engine.
