PORTLAND – One person was dead and a police officer was wounded in a shooting in Southwest Portland Wednesday, investigators said.

The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. across the street from Wilson High School in the Hillsdale neighborhood.

The officer was shot in the hand and was taken to Oregon Health & Science University for treatment, according to Lt. Rich Chatman with Portland Fire & Rescue. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

A second gunshot victim, believed to be the suspect, was shot in the head and died at the scene, Chatman said.

“Portland Police Youth Services officers and Central Precinct officers were responding to the area of Wilson High School on reports of a suspicious vehicle. Officers arrived in the area and a confrontation ensued,” said Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau. “The investigation is still ongoing but one officer suffered non-life-threatening wounds and the suspect was shot and killed.”

People working in the area told KGW they heard gunshots before several police cars swarmed the area.

A section of Capitol Highway near Wilson High, at Cheltenham Street and Southwest Terwilliger Blvd., was closed off for the investigation. The Capitol exit off Interstate 5 was also closed.

Around the same time as the shooting, police were investigating reports of a suspicious man in a van who followed two students as they walked home from school in the area.

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales arrived at the shooting scene early Wednesday evening and talked with police.
