NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -  An off-duty Las Vegas police officer killed in a shootout with intruders in his own garage grew up in Yakima, where he graduated in 1997 from Davis High.

Trevor Nettleton was killed just after midnight Thursday.

"He was standing in the garage with the garage door open when he was attacked by multiple suspects," said North Las Vegas police Officer Chrissie Coon. "It looks like it was an attempted robbery. There was an exchange of gunfire."

Nettleton, 30, was married with a 2-year-old son and 2-month-old daughter and had been with Las Vegas police three years, police said.

Nettleton's family was in the house during the shooting, including his mother, who was visiting for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

Speaking with KING 5 News, Nettleton's stepfather, Peter Austern, who lives in Tacoma, said Trevor was working in the garage, making a toy for his son, when the shooting occurred.

Austern said Trevor was shot in the chest, and managed to make it inside the house, where his mother was just coming out of the guest room.

"She had no idea what was going on," he said. "She put him in her lap ... he died in her arms," said Austern.

Trevor's brother, Ryan, just returned home to Tacoma, on emergency leave from his post in Iraq.

He said since their parents were both Washington State Troopers, both he and his brother dreamed about becoming police officers from an early age.

"He wanted to be a cop so bad when we were kids, and I wanted to be one, too," he said. "So we decided the best way to pursue that goal was to become military service members."

Trevor was a 10-year Marine Corps vet who served in the Bush White House.

Police said plans were being made for a funeral with full departmental honors.

Ryan Nettleton is now on emergency leave from Iraq, home in Tacoma before traveling to Las Vegas for services.

"I'm going to say goodbye to my brother, I'm more worried about my mother. It's bad enough when a parent outlives a child, but to have your child die in your arms from a murder. I can't imagine.," he said.

"Can you imagine anything more horrific than this?" said Austern.

The family has set up an account at Wells Fargo Bank, called the Ryan Nettleton Relief Fund.

Three people have been arrested in the case. Saul Williams Jr., 20, was booked in a North Las Vegas jail on multiple charges, including murder with a deadly weapon, authorities said. Prentice Marshall, 18, was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and will be booked in jail once he is released from the hospital. A 17-year-old, who name was not released because he's a minor, was booked on the same charges and held at the juvenile detention center.

How very sad that you can't even stand in your own garage with the door open anymore. Good Lord what happened to the days that we didn't even lock our doors? My prayers are with the family and friends.

I am almost at a loss for words, this is so tragic on every level. All I can say is, this man is a hero, and his defense of his home was probably the only thing that prevented these monsters from getting into the house and harming the entire family. To the loved ones, sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers. To the three soulless thugs who did this: you deserve the worst we can dole out to you.

Dear Jesus, I pray that you watch over this family and help them find peace. I pray that you give wisdom to the police so they can bring justice to this horrific case. Fill the hearts of this family with your presence and love. They need you more than ever right now. I pray this in your name, Amen

I have known Trevor since we were 6th graders at Franklin Middle School in Yakima, and although we have not had contact into our adult lives I remember him as a good kid. This is terrible.

Take all 3 of the dirt bags out & hang them in public. They don't need to go to trial

Royalsts1, I am so sorry for your family and your loss. Not trying to be cruel but maybe you could join each other and drive to Vegas would be much cheaper and you could all be together to suport each other. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

I am saddened to hear of this. It is so obvious that we have so much anger and hatred in our country. It is very hard to hear of things like this, especially to the people that serve us and put their lives on the line as their career. My prayers go out to his Mother and Father, Wife and two children, and all of the other family members (Brother) that are so deeply affected by this senseless event.

Why are they not charging that 17 year-old as an adult? Spread his name all over the news. Those poor babies have to grow up without their father because of his involvement. I feel horrible for his mom. I, too have had a child (Infant) pass away in my arms and it is a horrible feeling when you know you can't help them. My condolences to his wife and those precious babies and the rest of his family.

I bet they will have to segerate them from the general prison population, because a lot of them have moms they love. Because if they do not segerate them and they hear he died in his moms lap and arms, we know what will happen to them. We read about people getting shot almost every day, but to make it inside and then die in your moms lap and arms, that broke me up. If they do not get the death penalty, they should get more time for the anguish they caused his mom.

These 3 animals need to be punished to the extream - what they did was horrible. They took away a beautiful life and destroyed a wonderful loving family. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, I will be donating today and hope it will help ease the financial burden so the family can grieve. Trevor Nettleton, God Bless you and may you rest in peace.

Why should they be segregated? Let the other prisoners know who they are and what they did. Why should tax money be spent to protect them? Let them fend for themselves. They ambushed this poor man in his own home. Let them rot in the general population.

too bad the north las vegas police department didn't try to save the taxpayers some money. I agree with the public hangings. maybe they can implode a casino with these criminals inside.

That is the point Deniseh. You read where they challenge lethal injection as being cruel. So if they threw them in with the general population and we know what would happen, that would really be considered cruel. Our constitution protects everyone as we know.

God Bless this family and protect them from the idiots who leave ridiculous messages on this site. As a Correctional Lieutenant at a California Men's prison I can tell you that these men just earned their bones and not one convict will bother them in the least. They killed a cop! To them they did good. Sick world we live in but the good shall prevail. My prayers and thoughts are with this family and I hope that the Las Vegas police dept helps get the family there to Vegas.

Dark one if you will read carefully,it is not whether he was a cop, but you take the mom factor into it. A child she expected live longer than her, her child dies not out on a lonely area, but in her lap and arms. Again you may be a correction officer, but I have been around the block big time and I know people who know others who have been in prison. We read about people getting shot every day and this one did not bother me until he made it inside and his mom happened to come out at that time
