Anti-gun groups take aim at Starbucks' gun policy

SEATTLE -- The debate over gun control comes to Seattle and lands at the doorstep of the first Starbucks store.

Three anti-gun groups - the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Washington CeaseFire and the Washington State Million Mom March Chapters - rallied at Seattle's Victor Steinbrueck Park today to urge Starbucks to change its policy on customers with guns.

Currently, wherever the local law allows it, Starbucks' policy also allows customers to carry guns in its stores. The company says all its outlets complies with 43 states that have open-carry weapons laws.

So far, the campaigners have gathered over 30,000 signatures, urging Starbucks to ban guns in their stores. The petition demands Starbucks "offer espresso shots, not gunshots."

"I think Starbucks will eventually have to declare all of these gun-free zones," said Ralph Fascitelli, president of Washington CeaseFire. "The vast majority of people, we believe, do no want guns. I mean, mothers with children do not want guns in Starbucks."

The Brady Campaign says so far, Peet's Coffee, Buckhorn Grill and California Pizza Kitchen have listened to customers' concerns and barred the open carrying of guns in their establishments. "We have been contacted by Starbucks customers," said Brady Campaign spokesman Brian Malte. "We're representing them. We feel strongly as they do that guns and latte and coffee do not belong in their stores."

However, some anti gun speakers were heckled.  Heidi Yewman of Washington's Million Mom Walk was accused of "fearmongering."  A group of gun rights supporters say guns in the coffee shop will keep Starbucks safer.

"Unfortunately, criminals don't care, and if they believe that Starbucks is a free haven - 'Oh, this is a gun free zone' - guess which place is going to get robbed," said one gun rights advocate.

Gun owner Sheri Sipin said private handguns might have changed the outcome of the shooting at the Parkland Forza coffee shop where four police officers were killed.  "I know if I were there, I would have shot him, " Sipin said. "If I had my gun on me and he shot at those police officers, I would've been right there. I would've backed them up."

One customer in Seattle said it's a good policy because of the big customer base who agree with Washington's law on guns.

"There are probably I guess 92,000 NRA members in the state," said Jim Beal, gun owner. Another customer, Brandi Israel,  said the choice should be Starbucks'.  "It's been like this for how long now? So why change it now?"

The groups planned to deliver the signatures to Starbucks' headquarters today. Meanwhile, Starbucks has released the following statement in response to their open carry weapons policy:

We recognize that there is significant and genuine passion surrounding the issue of open carry weapons laws. Advocacy groups from both sides of this issue have chosen to use Starbucks as a way to draw attention to their positions.
While we deeply respect the views of all our customers, Starbucks long-standing approach to this issue remains unchanged. We comply with local laws and statutes in all the communities we serve. In this case, 43 of the 50 U.S. states have open carry weapon laws. Where these laws don't exist, we comply with laws that prohibit the open carrying of weapons. The political, policy and legal debates around these issues belong in the legislatures and courts, not in our stores.
At the same time, we have a security protocol for any threatening situation that might occur in our stores. Partners are trained to call law enforcement as situations arise. We will continuously review our procedures to ensure the highest safety guidelines are in place and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement.
We have examined this issue through the lens of partner (employee) and customer safety. Were we to adopt a policy different from local laws allowing open carry, we would be forced to require our partners to ask law abiding customers to leave our stores, putting our partners in an unfair and potentially unsafe position.
As the public debate continues, we are asking all interested parties to refrain from putting Starbucks or our partners into the middle of this divisive issue. As a company, we are extremely sensitive to the issue of gun violence in our society. Our Starbucks family knows all too well the dangers that exist when guns are used irresponsibly and illegally. Without minimizing this unfortunate reality, we believe that supporting local laws is the right way for us to ensure a safe environment for both partners and customers.

Thank you Starbucks you are the voice of reason in the darkness and it could just be why you don't hear of Starbuck stores being robbed. Rest assured that both my wife and I will do all we can do to insure your stores are safe.

I surely think that latte's and coffee belong in the Starbucks Stores after reading the poorly written article. The guns and open carry don't bother me, but when I do pack, I do it under my clothing. "An armed society is a polite society," Ben Franklin. I however also believe in all the other amendments in our constitution as well. Something the Brady Group must just hate! Too Bad!! WAY TO GO STARBUCKS. Starbucks management are the true patriots here!!

American freedom is illusory at best. It is one thing, to have freedom of speech and ideals. That is great. Now shut up and leave me alone. Your ideals of life, are not mine. If I wish to keep a gun for protection, then I will. Do something about our justice system, that allows criminals to be on the street with a slap on the wrist. Leave guns alone. Leave starbucks alone. It is all we have to protect ourselves from criminals. Why is it, that there is always someone, sticking their noses into other peoples and demanding we live as they do?

By restricticing guns for the responsible population of people who have CWP - we are giving into the criminals - and giving them an easier chance with easier targets. Criminals are just that - criminals. They don't give a flying rats anything that any place has a "no Guns" policy. This is just ridiculous. Give me a break.

Has there been a sudden surge of people openly carrying guns into Starbucks? What's this hooplah about? These anti-gun groups sound like a bunch of whiners when they target an establishment that hasn't had any issues with citizens obeying the gun laws and they themselves are complying with the law!

I rarely carry a weapon. However if I choose too I do. If you choose to carry open which generally speaking I don't understand it is your right. Right being the operative word. People in this country have fought and died to preserve those rights the very foundation of this nation. I don't support Mr. Fascitelli's position. I do however support his right to voice it, however inane I believe it to be. I support the anti gun crowds rights. They will unfortunately need to learn to support mine including my right to carry a weapon. If I happen to be in a situation where an anti gun person needs me to intervene in order to insure their continued survival, after I have exhausted all other avenues, Calling the police, Can we flee? When I am out of options and make the escalation of force decision to draw a weapon and prepare to use deadly force to protect myself and you. Perhaps you could inform me that you would prefer that I didn't assist you. Then while you are being assaulted. I can flee.

What are these anti-gun groups worried about? Has there been a rash of shootings in Starbucks lately? Odd that they haven't made the news. Tell you what: we would save thousands of times as many lives if we banned swimming pools instead of guns. Why don't these people who are oh-so-concerned about public safety seem to worry about that?

Does that mean the cops have to leave their guns outside too hm?! I mean just in case I'm being strangled or mugged or beaten over the head in Starbucks just what exactly am I suppossed to do - talk my attacker to death?! Sorry, I know that's unreal but if you have a free right to carry to weapon in the state does that mean Starbucks will have a check in counter for your gun on the way out hm?! Instead of badgering firms to stop people carrying a gun in the premises they visit look at the reality of it - as someone's already said by making this place a known gun free zone it makes it an easier target for gun toting crims who by the way aren't going to ask nicely, nor if they burst through the door with an AK47 is the security guard and a metal detector going to be much use to anyone!! It's not just the cash register they'll rob it's everyone in the store - so hang in there Starbucks and don't give into these anti-gun groups until they legislate otherwise!!

As a licensed pistol carrier, I applaud Starbucks. Others are right, this is not a constitutional issue. As a private institution, they would be fully within their rights to deny firearms on their property. However, they have looked beyond the fearful propaganda and focused on the reality that "gun free zone"s are a sham. They only keep the law abiding citizen defenseless and the criminals undeterred. Kudos, Starbucks!

The US is addicted to firearms, much the way an alcoholic or substance abuser is addicted to the drink or drug of choice. We live in a bubble and have lost any connection with reality on the gun issue. We need more and more people to stand up and say enough of this illness. Repeal the 2nd Amendment and restore sanity. Unfortunately, this won't happen because the US is an addicted society at its core: oil, guns, drugs, violence, reality TV, drama, food, alcohol, sugar, and on and on. We are killing ourselves and loving every minute of it! So pass me another Krispy Kreme and give me my gun!

@gjp2010. I really REALLY hope you are joking. Do you have a smoke detector in your home? Does your car have airbags? Do you wear your seatbelt? Why? These are all tools and means you use to keep yourself safe in the event that something that could threaten your life were to happen, right? So how does this differ from a firearm? It is a tool that I carry on a day to day basis. I hope I NEVER have to use it, but, if one day like many people do every day, I am walking down the street and feels they want to threaten my life, guess what, my smoke detector is going off, my air bags are getting deployed, I will go home and kiss my wife when it is all said and done, because I will be alive. You think just getting rid of the 2nd amendment and getting rid of guns will get them off the street? How many bad guys have followed current laws and put down the drugs, stopped robbing people? How criminals have stopped setting peoples houses on fire, or stabbing people? Answer that!

All you talking about supporting the Constitution are wrong, in a way. Any Starbucks shop is private property, as such, they would have the right to ban guns. Several chains have already done this. At least, open carry. There was nothing unconsitutional about it. (BTW, Although I don't own a gun, I don't care if you have one or not, it's your choice, not mine, so I do support gun rights, but this is more a arguement about what private property owners have a right to do on their own property.)

Would you put a shirt on that says, "I'm always unarmed and hate guns?" I sure wouldn't! When any store or business says that no matter what, no guns are allowed here, I'd rather stay away as a target has just been placed on the place. I see where people ask where were the gun owners on some of these killing sprees to protect people I have to ask myself, this person has some agenda that doesn't make sense. The police in any coffee shop or restaurant will always be targets of the criminal mind, especially those with some psychotic malady involved. I recall the Psychologist from the state of Texas, who at that time was not allowed by law to carry a firearm legally and so left it at home. She got to see her parents shot down in a restaurant that day and normally would have had a firearm in her purse and was unable to save her folks..This is what we're dealing with in this world. Governments and cities can't guarantee your safety, just ask!! Good luck without protection of your own.

pamby, aziza raises a valid question not an ignorant one. Dan McKown tried as you suggest to tell the gunman to put his weapon down and he was shot. Christopher Monfort, when conftonted by detectives whith their guns drawn, didn't drop his gun and raise his hands, he pulled the trigger. This isn' t hollywood, in real life the shooter's don't just raise their hands and drop their weapons. This scenario questions whether or not it is in the best interest of all for armed citizens to engage themselves in law enforcement activities. My guess is that the police would prefer that the law abiding folks just get out of the way in such a scenario. It would be interesting to hear a law enforcement reply to such a scenario.

When do criminals abide by our laws? Your protest are hindering law abiding citizens, not criminals. Criminals could care less about rules! I've never seen a gun inside a Starbucks from another customer (except for cops) in the past 8 years ( 3 of which employed by Starbucks) of being a Starbucks consumer. I have personally carried a firearm into Starbucks as I have a "License To Carry Concealed Pistol" in the State of Washington. This is my right as an American and Washington State resident. I'm a veteran of both the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army and a veteran of one of our police agencies so I think I'm more than qualified to carry a concealed pistol in this state even though I don't 99.9% of the time! Go back to work people and focus on your careers and quit protesting this! Your not going to win and that's just the way it is. Starbucks is not going to cave in to the minority, if you don't like it go to Tully's or one of the many drive up strip joint coffee stands!

I'm unemployed and don't particularly like McStarbucks coffee. The company does, however, support many community based projects, and in the case of them following the laws of the cities and states in which they do business, I fully support them. I'll go see if there's enough change in the sofa and under the washer to buy a cup of their coffee this week.

Way to go Starbucks!!!! I live in Kansas where we have a Concealed Carry law which states that the firearm must be out of sight. I am a regular customer of Starbucks and amazing as it might sound, I am fine with their policy. Most of the people who have "CCW's" are not cowboys. Most dress respectively and have an attitude that matches it. We do not want to take the law into our own hands, BUT if attacked by a Social Parasitic Predator we have the means to defend ourselves and our loved ones. God forbid if I ever have to use it, I will no doubt spend all my money (and possibly my job) defending myself in court against "wrongful death" lawsuits from the Criminal's family but the alternative is not acceptable. We currently have a serial rapist running around my town preying on single women. All we want is to be safe and enjoy a warm cup of coffee on a cold day with some good friends and laugh. Remember: "when seconds count, the Police are just minutes away".

The liberals only want to follow the constitution and equal rights if it works for them or fits into their agenda. Let’s face it, how many times have companies bowed down to these minority radicals. Thank you to Starbucks who is supporting the legal rights of gun owners in this country and supporting the majority. I only wish more would do the same. For the liberals, gun violence happens when criminals who don’t legally carry use them. By banning guns, you are only taking away the safety of the public by taking away the legal right of the good citizens to protect themselves and others. The criminals will still carry law or no law. They are criminals for a reason. I will see you at Starbucks, gun on my hip.

These crime loving fringe groups like Ceasefire Washington continue to miss the point. If they are concerned about law abiding citizens doing business somewhere they have the right to not enter that business. By the same token, those of us that love the constitution, the same one that gives them the right to protest like they do, do not want to violate the 2nd amendment rights and will not do business with any company that tries to deny those rights and indicates that they only want criminals, and criminal support groups like CFW, doing business there. I don't carry a gun, but will be forced to if these haters of our constitution get their way, but make it very clear that I WILL NOT do business with anyone that imposes a policy that violates our constitution.

Good for Starbucks!!!! All these city officials/politicians want to pass laws banning guns in parks, etc. Excuse me, but the people who cause problems with guns do not own them legally. Do you actually think that passing a law or gun restriction will make things safer? Of course it won't. It isn't the law abiding citizens causing the problems, so quit trying to punish us. Start throwing the criminals behind bars longer, and we won't need to worry about who is next to us drinking a cup of Joe.

Three people walk into Starbucks. Person A is an ex marine, person B is an average citizen, and person C is a criminal. All have concealed weapons. Two on duty policemen are sitting in a corner going over their notes. Person C makes his move- suicide by cop- and draws his weapon. Persons A and B draw their weapons in quick response to person C. The two police draw their weapons as well. A person fires but it is unclear who fired. Who do think the police are going to shoot?

He obviously doesn't care about the law so what makes you think just because they say you can not have a gun somewhere he will not take a gun in there. Same with all criminals. Why punish people that are responsible for the criminals stupidity. Honestly I feel safer knowing that somebody around me may have a gun on them and when a criminal does come around with a gun to open fire, the guy thats allowed to have a gun and does is there.

I don't carry a gun, but not because I think guns are bad, wrong, scary, or the root of our violence problems. Yet, I think if a person has gone the steps our laws have set forth for them to carry a gun, so be it. As a few others have said, they are not the ones we should be worried about having a gun. It's those that buy an illegal firearm with the intention of never being traced to it after they've committed some crime. So, if I happen to be at Starbucks and one of the criminals decides to pull out their gun, it would be comforting to know that there just might be someone else there with training and knowhow to protect me and other patrons....just a thought.

forza would never have gotten that bad if the baristas had a firearm behind the counter and used it. It would have likely saved the lives of at least one of the cops that was ambushed and would have taken out the shooter at the scene. If more baristas had hand guns, fewer would be held up (one drive up barista in idaho a couple of months ago proved this)

People have to remember that our constitution is the back bone of our country our Forefathers put that into the constitution so that government can't have all the power. The groups that do this need to remember, the citizens that carry is the one that made it possible to brake from the crown. This subject would not not have come up if the officers had not fallen in a coffee shop. But it would of happened just the same if not there. The system failed us. Now its not the coffee shops responsibility to make laws. These people need to remember in, We the people. I feel deeply for the soles that have been hurt by gun violence, I too have had the pain of losing a loved one to a gun. I still will not give mine up. I believe in the constitution the bill of rights. I just wish all Americans can do the right thing and care for others as they care for themselves. This would stop the violence on all fields. Now, give from the hart. You are not the most important person you are a part of a whole.

WTG Starbucks! Stick to your guns and don't give in to the few who are paranoid about legal gun owners. If someone walks in with a gun on their hip, he, or she, is probably a law abiding citizen. Worry about the criminals with the concealed guns who will be the one to do something. I guess if Starbucks backs down and decides to go along with the paranoid idiots, then the cops won't be able to go into Starbucks either. Or any of the Baristas to have their morning coffee. You can't tell some they can't but it's OK for others. The poor policemen and woman, who were killed in Lakewood, had their guns in plain sight but the jerk who killed them didn't! I am a 68 year old great grandma who has a concealed weapons permit. I don't usually carry a gun where ever I go but I would like to think I could since it's the law of the land. Had someone been packing a pistol in plain sight at the coffee house, most of the public would have no idea who Forza is. When Clemmons walked in, he could have shot at the officers and got shot by the civilian or shot the civilian and had 4 officer holes in him. Or, he could have turned around and left in search of an easier target. There is no way he would have left under his own power, and he would have known it. Maybe packing in plain view is good. Naw, I still say put it away until you need it, but don't leave it at home.

I have legally carried a weapon since I was 21. I am now 57 and have never had to shoot anyone thank God, but I have had occasion to let someone know that I was armed to preserve someone else's life that I witnessed in serious trouble and about to be severely hurt or killed. Criminals use the gun as their preferred tool of choice. After all, they are criminals. Citizens who carry legal firearms may someday be a saviour to anyone in trouble, including random shootings and violence. I can only say that Starbucks in my opinion is doing the right thing here and their corporate leaders are truly patriots. My hat is off to them as they seem to know that the law of the land is the law. Maybe some of the people so interested in throwing our precious and hardwon rights with much blood spilled should go abroad sometime and stand on a corner with the 18 year-olds packing fully automatic rifles or have coffee with heavily armed people around. The real problem with this issue is that it is emotionally charged and fed by junk science on both sides. Increasing the number of people carrying guns will not reduce crime. There is little evidence that banning guns in any single location will have any effect on crime either. There is evidence that reducing the number of guns within the society at large will reduce gun-related deaths, however that is not shown to be a causal relationship, it is coincidental, and not all gun-related deaths are criminal acts (e.g. suicide, accidents). Guns do not cause crime, if they did, banning them would reduce crime but that isn't supported by the data. Mental illness and drug and alchohol addiction are complex problems not solvable by throwing people in jail, yet they are behind the majority of violent crimes in this country. If the money and effort spent fighting over guns were spent on these problems we could actually reduce crime and be less inclined to feel the need to be armed.

Reading the comments on this subject has impressed me I normally think the world is made up of 40% idiots that stand out like a sore thumb. I think 99 percent of what I read is logical well thought out and intelligent. I may need to join the NRA soon just knowing that I'm not very vocal about my rights being threatened so perhaps I should help fund the people that are. So the anti gun folks only want the law breakers to be allowed to bring a gun into Starbucks. That is exactly the support they are advocating. The case I remember is one relayed to me by a friend, a retired military CID person, which took place in Texas. A restaurant owner restricted firearms in the restaurant with exception made for police and military law enforcement personnel. A woman met her parents for lunch, she left her pistol in her truck. On this particular day, no law enforcement personnel were in the restaurant, when a person came in and began shooting customers. I can't remember if both of her parents were killed, but the point is who is going to prevent this type of event from occurring? Are all restaurants going to have to hire security guards like banks? The liberal anti-gun folks only know what the want and don't care about those of us who have to live with their liberal whims. Lawbreakers do not care about what laws we enact, they will keep breaking the law.

With the economy the way it is and more people are becoming criminals, and law enforcement officers are feeling the pinch of cutbacks, it takes longer and longer for help to arrive when you are being victimized. There should be no Gun Free Zones anywhere. I should be able to carry my gun whether it is in the open or concealed as long as I have a permit to carry it. If you abuse that permit, and do stupid things, then you should be punished to the full extent of the law. Maybe at least one of those officers would still be alive today and Maurice would have gone down even sooner. I promise you, I would have littered my table and mocha with brass had I been in that situation, and 4 would be lying dead, 3 police officers and Maurice. *Begin Sarcasm* Just think, if this gun ban works, we could outlaw all kinds of bad things, like drugs, murder, rape... *End Sarcasm* Criminals DONT care and if I want to carry my firearm to even the odds, then that is exactly what I will do. As far as open carrying, My opinion is, if you see it, the criminal is even less likely to put me in a situation to use it, because he KNOWS I will use it. If it is concealed, how is he to know if I am armed. That increases my likely hood of needing to use force when it could have been avoided rather easily.

Starbuck is having a knee-jerk reaction to a truly horrible situation that took place at a similar coffee shop in the greater Seattle area. Simple facts need to be considered. 1st, legally armed citizens are not the problem for coffee shops or the greater population. 2nd, You do not have to be an NRA member to legally carry a firearm. Legally armed citizens, that conceal weapons, must pass a stringent law enforcement background check. To purchase a firearm you must pass a similar background check. Law enforcement personnel carry firearms, when, and when off duty. They also drink coffee. For the record, the general population, carrying firearms or not, are not the problem. Criminals are the problem. Criminals don't care about Starbuck's gun rules. Starbuck's would get much better press by simply saying 'criminals stay out'. As for legal and licensed gun owners like me; Do you know I'm carrying a firearm? Do you really? That's why it's called a Concealed Weapons Permit.

If I am bent on killing a bunch of people, I will walk past the NRA convention room and stop at the anti-everything hall. The majority of crooks look for the easy target, and knowing that people may be carrying makes a target a little less vulnerable. Sure, there will be people like mr Clemmons, but they would use a car or hand grenade if they couldn't find an illegal gun to use.

Morons ! Why pick on Starbucks? I can guarantee that when I walk into Starbucks, no one will be able to tell that I'm carrying. The same holds true for virtually every other person w/ a cwp. Although this is an "open carry" state, I have never seen a person carry in this way in a large metropolitan area.

It's not about coffee. It's about Corporate America being able to operate within the laws of the country. It's about supporting the Constitution. All these are anti-American groups, to be sure. If you don't love our Country, don't love and support the Constitution, and for which it stands, then these groups are for you. After all, that's what it is all about.

I am not a gun owner and would like to see more gun regulation but I hope Starbucks doesn't give in to these antigun groups. Starbucks is following the law. If you want gun regulation petition for an Amendment to the Constitution. Gun regulation any other way is completely unconstitutional. I hate it when people try to circumvent the Constitution.

So like yeah is Starbucks going to install metal detectors in all their stores? You all act like you see people open carrying in this state everyday. I know when I carry my gun, no one knows I have it on me. I keep it concealed.

Good for you Starbucks! Don't bend a sensible policy due to pressure from any minority group, even if they are noisy.

I'm more worried about the criminals that are carrying illegal concealed weapons.
