SHORELINE, Wash. -- It was a rough day on I-5 for some drivers after a massive chain-reaction crash resulted in 23 wrecked cars in the southbound lanes in Shoreline.

Amazingly, only one person suffered a minor injury in the accident.

The accident happened during the noon hour by the NE 145th Street onramp in Shoreline.  The accident blocked all southbound lanes of I-5 and traffic was diverted onto NE 145th Street for about an hour. Traffic was backed up for at least four miles to State Route 104. Three lanes of SB I-5 have since re-opened.

A Washington State Patrol trooper said rain, sunshine, and cars following the vehicle in front of them too closely likely caused the crash. He said he expects many citations to be issued.

someonewhocares. You are right. Coffee drinkers and people never use their blinkers anymore.Ridiculous how easy it is to get a license. I am never for raising restrictions on people but the madness must stop.1 year driving course in the snow, rain and sun with much emphasis on using turn signals as well as not riding on peoples asses.

The common "rule" of following another vehicle, is one car distance - per every 10MPH you are driving. I have yet to see that in my many years of driving in Washington State. I myself don't have any desire to see what you have hanging from your rear view mirror, but some people must find this a fascinating hobby, since they ride so closely to your rear end. Non-Blinkers and tail-gators, some say natural selection, some say aggressive drivers.... I say....the life you save, may be your own. If you want to be there that quickly, get up early, or lessen the caffeine.

I was literally RIGHT behind the accident today -- one of the few cars that got to drive past it before they detoured traffic; we definitely counted 20 cars ourselves, so KOMO was way wrong if they said there were only 5! There was a ton of debris on the road, too; lucky only one person had minor injuries!

"brewster" gets an A for his/her comment. "fleetkanani" Yes you should be able to avoid it, provided you leave proper distance, your speed is adjusted for the current conditions and of course your paying attention.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. Washingtonians are terrible drivers. They follow too close and refuse to move right after they pass. many often drive about with their fog lights on in broad daylight- both illegal and dangerous. Learn to drive and the accidents will be fewer and farther between!

brewster - sounds like at least 22 more "idiots" ruining the commute for thousands of others. More than likely everyone behind #1 will be cited for following too closely. Quit riding the bumpers of the cars in front of you folks! Whatever you're in a hurry for isn't worth a life!!! Slow down. Utilize basic common courtesy on the roads you're driving. Use your turn signals for changing lanes.

Let the state make the extra money by stronger driving requirements and more frequent driver's tests, maybe every 8 years or so. Being a daily driver that took drivers ed in this state, there are obviously lots of people who could use a driver's ed class. And if you move here from another country I don't believe classes are even a requirement, just the test.

I agree with brewster too, those peanutheads even make a complete stop on the highway just to switch lanes or they cut you off so you have to hit the breaks like there is no tomorrow. Sorry but there is a serious need for drivers ED .
