TACOMA. Wash. – Dep. Kent Mundell's first career choice was not law enforcement. It was a neighbor who convinced the father of two to join the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

His mother, Pat Stafford, says Mundell knew the risks and died doing what he loved.

"He knew someday he might have to give his life for others," said Stafford.

Stafford says she would receive phone calls from her son while he was on duty.

"He would say 'Whoops. I got to go. I have a call.' I would say 'What kind of call?' so I know if I needed to say an extra prayer for him and always tell him to be safe," said Stafford.

On Dec. 21, Mundell and Sgt. Nicholas Hausner responded to a domestic violence call in Eatonville that ended in a hail of gunfire. Both Mundell and Hausner were shot and hospitalized. Mundell was able to return fire and kill the suspect, David Crable.

Stafford had spoken to her son that morning.

"He was at the door with a 'Hey, mom,' which is always how he greeted me," said Stafford. "He came in, bouncing in, full of life and energy.

"That 'Hey, mom' is going to be hard not to experience at my door because he was always there."

For a week, Mundell remained on life support at Harborview Medical Center. On Christmas, Stafford gave her son a cross necklace as a gift.

"They were able to put it around his neck. It was such a pleasure. It expressed my sentiments. I just had 'My son, my joy' engraved upon it," said Stafford.

On Monday, Mundell died after being taken off life support.

"it was such a horrible nightmare for all of us, but we knew from the outset the prognosis was not good," said Stafford.

Mundell knew one day he may lose his life in the line of duty.

"If it was his destiny, if he was called to do this and he had to give his life, I am thankful it was for others because greater love has no man than to lay down his life for a brother," said Stafford.

This mother wants other to remember her son as a charismatic, caring individual who always saw the good in others.

"I am very proud of the man he turned out to be and I am really honored, very honored, to be his mom," said Stafford.

Stafford is considering speaking at Tuesday's memorial for Mundell at the Tacoma Dome.

Memorial details

The public is invited to attend the memorial and line the procession route.

The procession will begin at 10 a.m. at the Puyallup Fair and Events Center, 110 9th Avenue SW. The route will start north on S. Meridian, veer right to Third Street SE then Second Street NE. It will then turn west onto River Road, continuing through on Bay Street where it will head west on Puyallup Avenue and proceed north on C Street to the Tacoma Dome.

Parking will be limited at the Tacoma Dome. The public is encouraged to use alternative parking areas.

Several funds have been set up for Mundell's wife and two children. You can contribute at:

  • Any branch of Columbia Bank.
  • Any branch of Tapco Credit Union, or on their Web site
  • The Pierce County Deputy Sheriffs Guild Web site

The sheriff's department says it has already gotten complaints from citizens about bogus companies calling them trying to solicit donations for the Mundell family. The department says it does not support those companies and that you should not give any money over the phone.

Cards to the family or Police Department may be sent to Family of Deputy Kent Mundell or Pierce County Sheriff's Department, Mountain Detachment, P.O. Box 1489, Eatonville, WA 98328.

Justcommenting, you're right. People do die everyday. It just doesn't affect you unless you know the person or if that person is you. People do die every day. It is how they die that makes the difference. Do me a favor. Go back to the home page and see if you can find my name somewhere there. I'll give you a hint since you seem like you would need it. It starts out "Tory's Journey." Granted, I will die soon, but what am I doing until then? So please don't just run your mouth off. You may think it's funny, but it isn't to the people that death affects.

Mrs Stafford, I share your sorrow. We, as parents, are NEVER prepared for our children to preceed us in death. Regardless of our age or strengths we are never prepared. I can tell you time is your friend, but it takes a lot of that. Most important is if we live to be 150 we never will get over it, but you can, have to, learn to live with it. You are on the right track, listening to your interview, as what you are left with is memories. Cherish those fond memories and know he is in a better place. I wish I were there to help you cry because that is the most essential part. It took me years to learn that lesson, to cry. Big boys DO cry and its OK for big girls as well. I will cry a bit for you these next few days and pray you are able to accept this passing. Hopefully my words can provide you strength and comfort.

My apologies, I meant to type : "Un-naturally dying by violence, especially at a young age, is a traumatic, life changing EVENT for the surviving loved ones......"

Dying is a very natural part of life and something we all have in common. HOWEVER, dying a violent death by gunfire is exceptionally UN-NATURAL. Living a long life and dying of natural causes is sad, but can be understood and surviving loved ones grieve and go on with life. UN-naturally dying by violence, especially at a young age, is a traumatic, life changing even for the surviving loved ones, and while the loved ones will go on with life, the grieving and recovery process goes on for years. There is nothing normal or natural about the process, and as we can read by so many comments left on the various news sites, these recent law enforcement deaths have affected most of us deeply, down to our basic humanity.

Is that why many of them have that occupation? Please, I'm not a racist. A lot of white people commit crimes also. They usually commit crime during the daytime because they're invisible during that time.

Can anybody give me an input about capturing a black criminal's face at night? Man, they definitely have the advantage in committing a crime at night...

Oh, one more thing! If you see a criminal committing a crime, use your cell phone camera or video! It'll speed up the good process!

PROTECT OUR COPS! They protect us! Whenever you see a cop(s) on the street, keep an eye on him/them as long as you can. So that, if something happens to them, we can at least point other Law Enforcement officers to the right direction with the descriptions of the perp. and the vehicle. That's what I do all the time. Sometimes, it freaks out some cops, hehehehehehehe, but, hey, I'm watching out for you so that you can watch out for me when I need your help!

Justcommenting.... You must be one unhappy person. Probably alone and unloved. To be honest there isnt much there for anyone to love. You are a waste of human skin. It doesnt matter what the story is you make unkind remarks. More than likely because you have no life other than this website.

"justcommenting" has been making these disrespectful, insensitive and callous comments for quit some time. It is truly unfortunate he/she chooses to make these comments, I think when he/she grows up he/she will understand. I know if family and friends are reading these comments, they know that the vast majority support and respect their loved ones and are thinking of them during this difficult time.

"people die everyday. its a part of life". Would you please clarify this statement? Before I rip you apart on this careless statement? My inquiry is this: Are you justifying the murder of people? Are you being sarcastic? Are you somebody who believes his death was "justified"? Are you casually dismissing a tragedy? I'm sure the rest of us would like to know.
