OLYMPIA, Wash. -- An environmental attorney is asking Washington state's Forest Practices Board to adopt an emergency rule to establish a moratorium on logging around slide-prone areas in the wake of the deadly Oso mudslide.

Testifying at a Monday meeting called by the board, Peter Goldman of the Washington Forest Law Center said that recent review guidelines by Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark for proposed timber harvests near potential landslide hazard areas are a welcome step but not enough.

Under those requirements, applicants who want a harvest permit will need to provide a detailed site review by a qualified geologist if the state determines that a harvest near unstable slopes could affect public safety.
