MERCER ISLAND, Wash -- The Mercer Island City Council voted Monday night to reject a development planned for a large estate known as the Coval House.
A developer wants to tear down the existing mansion and build 18 new single family homes on the 5-acre property.
The city council heard from residents at Monday's meeting, who spoke for and against the proposal.
Council members ultimately cited environmental sustainability, traffic safety, and potential drainage concerns for their decision to reject the proposed development. They also had concerns about the potential impact to nearby wetlands that are not on the property.
The developer is still able to appeal the rejection or come up with a new plan.
An attorney for the property said the owners do not yet know how they will move forward.
