SEATTLE - Gov. Chris Gregoire is remembering state Sen. Scott White as a hard worker who never took himself too seriously.

Gregoire said at a memorial service Sunday that everyone knows White could have eventually served in Congress or as governor. She recalled the 41-year-old's dedication to his job in the Legislature and how he enjoyed taking on challenges.

"He was not afraid to stand up to leadership, he was not afraid to stand up to stakeholders, he was not afraid to stand up to lobbbyists, and he made it clear to me he was not afraid to stand up to a governor," she said.

The governor was one of the political leaders who honored White during a public service on the University of Washington campus.

White died two weeks ago due to a cardiac issue. He represented the state's 46th District, covering northern parts of Seattle. He is survived by his wife and two children.
