AUBURN, Wash. -- The man who had 74 cats and one dog crammed in his camper will likely be charged with second degree animal cruelty.

Jerry Reynolds, who is originally from Oregon, has been living in his truck for the last five weeks while he visits his girlfriend at Auburn Regional Medical Center.

Thursday evening, someone reported seeing multiple cats in the windows of the camper outside the medical center.

King County Animal Control responded and found the camper to be unsafe for the animals.

KING 5 News was there as the cats were counted and examined by veterinarians at a makeshift clinic. The conditions inside the camper were cramped and unsanitary, with feces on the floor.

Reynolds helped animal control officers remove the cats from the camper as veterinarians examined them. He said the  name of almost every cat as he handed them to authorities.

Reynolds said he had no other choice but to take the cats with him in the camper, instead of leaving them to fend for themselves.

"It was better than letting them go," he said.

Officials say the cats are not available for adoption or for fostering because the situation is in its very early stages. They will post updates on Facebook and the King County website.

You can also donate or volunteer. Click for information.

Sad situation - I too am encouraged that most people "get" that he loves these cats. They have names, he did not abandon them, and he was really muddling through a situation. Ideal situation? Not hardly. Criminal? Get real. Historically in extreme hoarding situations, Animal Control is pulling out dead and dying pets. Not seeing that here. In over his head, certainly, but that can be remedied WITHOUT a hammer to his life. If there was even a little bit of bad news on their health, it would be all over the news, but they are just "monitoring their health", which sound excting and difficult, but is nothing more that MOST pet owners do every day. It was a bad situation, not horrendous, and certainly not criminal.

I am encouraged by the number of commenters posting sympathy and support for this man. As any cat-savvy person can see from the pictures, the cats are of a good weight, their coats are thick and healthy, and they are alert -- they are NOT starving or mistreated. From all I have read, Mr. Reynolds made what he felt was the best decision in an emergency situation. I suspect he never imagined that he would be keeping the cats in that tiny area for 5 weeks. I agree -- he has plenty of problems without Pet Nazis seizing his cats and handing them out to God knows who. Just because an animal is adopted out by an excellent rescue like RASKC, doesn't mean the new home turns out to be wonderful. Mr. Reynolds might be a much better owner than the next one some of these cats would go to. I suspect the "cruelty charge" is primarily to discourage others from putting animals in an overcrowded situation like this. There is animal cruelty in the world and it needs to be punished -- but THIS is not it!

The cats look very well cared for and healthy - in spite of the poor living conditions. i feel sorry for the man who obviously cared very much for the cats. i hope he is not arrested and hope that he can keep a few of the cats.

Sounds like some sort of mental health issue to me. I don't think prison is the answer to this case. I honestly think this guy needs therapy of some sort.

If this man *really* cared about the animals, he would immediately relinquish ownership--would have done it *before* the situation became so horrible--to rescues and shelters so that they could be properly cared for and homes found for them. He called himself a "breeder", showing he was trying to run a kitten-mill to make as much money as he could. No respectable breeder would have that many animals at one time. He would never be able to get a license to have that many animals at one time, not even as a breeder! I hope the Court severs his ownership ASAP so the kitties aren't in limbo at the Shelter any longer than absolutely necessary. The focus should be on getting these cats proper care, nutrition, and healthy and then placed into happy forever homes as quickly as possible.

He needs to be made an example and locked up for a long time so that other people look at this and decide not to act so stupid and crazy. 74 cats is ridiculous and nuts.

So many cases of animal hoarding, from rats to cats. The article says they are seeking donations. Maybe Duckling can donate the rats? At least that would be one hoarding case eliminiated, and very cost effective as well.

74 cats are a LOT of cats to cats to care for. I had a lot of cats at one time too, and believe me it was a lot of work. He has more than 3 times what I had. I understand the love one gets from the animals which sometimes is a lot more than from most humans sometimes. But I know I would never have so many ever again. One is enough. But lonely people who feel like the whole world is against them somehow when they are down and beaten turn to their pets who are nonjudgemental for comfort and companionship. All he wants is for them to have good homes and be cared for as much as he cares for them. If I were him I would pick out a few he just can't live without and let the rest go to good homes. Having peace of mind for them is important to him.

Last night when I read about this, I didn't read anything about the owner or situation., and I thought "how horrible".. Now I feel that this guy needs help, and not charges that he more than likely can't afford. He obviously loves the cats, and didn't just leave them...hopefully some organization or someone will offer help...the pictures of the cats didn't show them to be in neglected condition, and if he was spending time at a hospital, it's not surprising that the camper was "messy", cripes, 74 cats, I get a mess with far less than that! And don't take away his cats! (but spay and neuter them if they aren't already :)

These cats need homes and this fellow needs some help, last thing he needs is criminal charges for trying to do his best with his situation.

My point is I think sometimes our society overreacts to situations and seems to be very punitive instead of being understanding and cutting some people some slack. Doesn't mean people should get by with doing things either. Just means have a heart sometimes. I get the impression that we live more ia a "gestapo " state than a humane and civil society. Some people just have really soft hearts and I totally agree 74 cats are over the top, but some help instead seems to have been needed here instead of an arrest. Why is arresting somebody always the first response instead of the last?

@His heart might be in the right place but his head is up his ***! Being an animal lover I can cut this guy some slack..He only deserves a lecture on people understand his heart was in the right place but what he was doing was not in the best interest of the cats and not to forget the dog.

Moses Lake, specifically Grant Co. code, limits the # of animals that can be kept on property just like King Co. does (no more than 3 grown dogs/cats/similar), but nice of people to try justifying the act of hoarding pets based on where he's from. by the way he handed them over politely but only after he was caught. If he had, of his own initiative, come to animal control to surrender them instead, then he wouldn't be faulted. anyway, i doubt he will be seriously penalized in the end....i think he just needs some mental help or something. so do the people on this thread who think 74 cats and a dog stacked on top of each other is alright

I can only suggest maybe that the court drop charges on this man- with the surrender of all these cats. I would love to adopt one :) give a little baby a good home, ,love and medical treatment.

@KING 5!! Why have you not given any heads up in the past few days about the missing hikers at Mt. Raineir..A weather report, or what is being done regarding the search..You surely seem to drop the ball a lot after you spend time covering a worthy news story..

I agree, give this poor fella a break. His heart is in the right place and he didn't want them to just be left to roam or fend for themselves. He wanted them to have good homes and now that he is getting help with finding homes for them and is willing and helping toward that end....drop the stupid charges. What honest good is there in just criminalizing this fella anyway? He is in need of help not condemnation. Why is that we have to be so punitive all the time?????? SCROOGES!

This truly breaks my heart. For the animals, yes. But also for this man, who clearly needs help - not jail time or stiff fines. There are lots of people who abuse animals intentionally, or simply through malicious neglect, but I do not think that's the case here. What a sad situation. I really hope that King County does the "right" thing here, get this man some assistance (mental, financial, etc.).

I'm a serious animal-lover and almost all of my (lovely and friendly) pet rats have been from hoarding and mass-abandonment situations, so I dislike hoarding and animal cruelty more than 99% of people. But I don't think this should be treated as a cruelty case. It would only teach the man that he should have abandoned his animals rather than try to care for them and get charged with cruelty. He just didn't have a good outlet for getting them proper care; being from out of town and without internet access, he might not know of all the rescue support out there or how to access it. He didn't realize he was going to be there so long. And how will he pay fines? Will he serve time??? This man only needs help himself and to reduce his pet numbers. I'm not convinced he is a true "hoarder" rather than just a less-than-responsible breeder that does love his animals. I think I'll send a message to King County Animal Control if they are the ones with the power over these charge

He obviously has a hoarding problem, and needs help -- not criminal charges brought against him. It's obvious he loves each of those animals.

All this poor man wanted was to be near his ailing girlfriend. Give him a break. This was only a temporary solution for his cats. Apparently he couldnt find or afford to pay someone to care for then while he was away. Yes, the camper was filthy. But those cats seem to look healthy from the pictures anyway. He knew all their names and probably cared for them the best he could given the situation he was in.

What a sad and tragic story. Is that all he had as "family" ? The camper looks so bad, but what needs to be done is help him... the cats don't look that bad off. Seen worse on "Hoarding".

He would have been better off to just let the cats run free because they will find food to eat. This nothing I lived next doot to a woman and she had over 100 cats and thought she was the only one that could take good enough care for them..They was crusted up with fleas crawling all over them, her daughter had flea bites all over her legs, the cats had pus in there eyes and many had diarrea. The trailer smelled so bad you couldn't even get close to it, all you smelled was cat urine. She wanted homes for them but when it came down to it she wouldn't part with them and would start crying. We tried trapping some and she even wanted us to trap them so we could take them to this farm out in the country to have a good life and then she would sneak over into my yard and let them out in the dark, and these were the wild ones. She would capture some herself and would never let them out, and they would be clawing her curtains to get out. This cat lady was nuts.

A sad story. he is from Moses Lake, and despite having this many cats, he choose to bring them instead of leaving them to fend for themselves and HE is charged with cruelty? Give it a rest King Co. your not a friend of animals as we all know. In all likely hood you will put to sleep most of these healthy cats with names!

Wouldn't it be nice to know the whole story? Why did he have 70 cats and what did he mean he had no other choice, but to take the cats with him? Where were the cats before he put them in the camper? Does he have property in Oregon or a home that was overcrowded with cats? Is there really a girlfriend in the hospital here? Why is his girlfriend in a Hospital in Auburn? What is the point of charging him with Animal Cruelty, unless it is to offset the cost to care for all these animals and the labor cost of the animal control personnel? I think someone needs to investigate where this guy came from in Oregon and see what the conditions might be like there.

Wait a minute, is this story about cats or a homeless guy? I havent read many of the comments but i'm guessing people these days care more about the cats then this older guy. Ok maybe he's not homeless just living in... Either way we done have the whole story here, the media sells sensationalizm. (sorry bad spelling, I got kick out of the seventh grade for selling my sisters cats for pot.)
