A man who lives on a boat at a Port Townsend marina was found dead in the water Sunday morning.
Port Townsend Police Department officers and East Jefferson Fire-Rescue personnel were dispatched to the Boat Haven at 7:59 a.m. Sunday after a 911 call was received reporting what appeared to be a body floating in the water.
The man was identified as Richard B. Finn, 49, who had been living on a friends' 26-foot sailboat moored in the marina.
Police say Finn was last seen alive around 5 a.m., when a police officer stopped to check on him in front of West Marine, near the Boat Haven. Police say Finn appeared to have been drinking alcohol, so the officer summoned a fire department ambulance for a medical evaluation.
No cause for medical concern was found at the time, so the officer and aid crew escorted Finn to his boat. The officer and aid personnel ensured Finn was safely in the cabin of the vessel before departing. It is unknown when or why he later exited the boat.
The cause of death is still being determined, but the Police Department has found no reason for residents to be alarmed for their own safety.
