ORTING, Wash. - A man died Sunday morning when he went back into a burning home to try to rescue his elderly mother.

Orting Valley Fire & Rescue and East Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire in the 17900 block of Pioneer Way E. shortly after 7 a.m., Lt. William Hash said.

Firefighters were told that one person was still in the home and one had been rescued.

Neighbors and passersby rescued the woman, who was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Lt. Hash said the home may not have had working smoke detectors.
