A Tacoma boy died Tuesday night under the care of his mom’s boyfriend.
An autopsy by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed Terrick Davis, 3, died of blunt force trauma to his head and abdomen.
After his mother, 23, returned home, the boy complained he was having trouble breathing. He was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, where he died 20 minutes later.
“The initial examination revealed there were some signs of physical abuse on the child,” said Officer Loretta Cool, a spokesperson with the Tacoma Police Department.
Doctors notified police, who questioned the boyfriend, Derrick Myers, 28.
Myer was arrested hours later and booked into the Pierce County Jail on charges of homicide by abuse. A 2-year-old girl also living there was taken and put in protective custody.
“I’ve been pretty upset all day,” said Naomi Norwood, who lives in the same complex.
Neighbors say there were never any signs something alarming was happening in their home.
“No crying, no nothing. The kids would be outside and say hi and then they’d go back, but nothing that would indicate there was a problem,” said Norwood.
According to a website post, the boyfriend’s brother, Damon Myer, believes he’s innocent. His message reads “He wouldn’t do something like that.”
Derrick Myers will make a court appearance Thursday afternoon.
