SEATTLE - A local pastor encouraged his congregation to help earthquake victims in Haiti.

To motivate them to give more, he traveled with a video crew to bring back first-hand images of the devastation in that country.

Pastor Mark Driscoll says churches in countries like Haiti are an integral part of the community, not just for pastoral services. They are a conduit for food, community services, and healthcare. So rebuilding those churches has become the focus of his fundraising efforts.

Driscoll landed in Haiti with his video crew on a 32-hour mission. In order to truly motivate his parishioners to give to the cause, he decided to bring Haiti to them, showing them collapsed churches, some of the pastors who lead them are now dead and being dug out of the rubble.

"In these kind of situations many people will flock to the churches for safety, for prayer, for funeral help, for counseling. And the churches are destroyed, and many of the pastors are dead," said Driscoll.

During one of his taped interviews, gunshots rang out. Driscoll said he turned to look and a teenage boy was dead in the street.

"To see a teenage boy just bleed out in front of you is horrible. I've got a teenage daughter, I'm a father of five," he said. "What was amazing is that parents didn't show up, relatives didn't show up, nobody came."

With all the horrors to see in Haiti, there were still wonders to behold - signs of happiness among the young, like a group of kids dancing on a blanket on the grass.

"Seeing that was amazing because it's nothing you would expect," said Jesse Bryan, Creative Director for Mars Hill and one of the videographers in the crew.

So far Mars Hill Church has raised half a million dollars for the cause. Driscoll is using these images to get people to keep giving.

"Americans tend to think, 'I cried, I gave, are we done yet?' And the issue is not for many years. So there needs to be additional waves of support," said Driscoll.

Mars Hill Church has joined a larger national group called Churches Helping Churches. Altogether they have raised $1.3 million.

I have a question for Mark Driscoll - since you and many other pastors are busy building your mega churches and criticizing people for "not giving enough" - how much are you giving? Are you willing to give up your expensive lifestyle so you can give more? I doubt it. You sound greedy. In case you haven't realized it - hundreds of thousands of people in this country have lost their jobs, losing their homes. As a Christian, I have no doubt that the Lord feels they should take care of themselves.

To me, this is almost criminal, I would bet that this money is going to go first and foremost to rebuild churches (look at the website title)... What these poor people need most right now is tangible aid, not spiritual assistance proffered by people who are essentially missionaries... Organized religion never ceases to disgust me with its passion for capitalizing on catastrophe to recruit new followers... If your god is so great, why were so many of his churches destroyed... I have given to secular aid groups, but I will never give a dime to groups that would answer pleas for food and water with scripture...

Billiamervyman: Those churches are right now playing refugee camp to thousands of victims. Are you saying that it's irrational to give money to the churches that are providing food and water for them? I think Mars Hill Church is doing something amazing with it's money, and criticism from people like you is absolutely ridiculous. Halito: Where do you get off saying Mark Driscoll hasn't given enough? He went to Haiti for a couple days, stared disaster and it's consequences in the face and instead of walking away reached into his pocket and gave his own personal money. Not the church's money, HIS money. Not to mention the 1,000 pounds of food and relief supplies he brought with him to Haiti. You don't know what you're talking about. Listen to the sermon before you chew him out for no valid reason.

With many news stories, they tend to have a flashy though inaccurate lead, to make the viewer want to watch. Having been married to a (now former) journalist for over 15 years, I get how the game is played. Mark Driscoll did not go to Haiti after "rebuking" his church for not giving more. That is false. I know this because I belong to a church, halfway across the country, whose pastor called Mark, and together they went on a fact-finding mission to see what was really happening in Haiti, particularly with The Church. In regards to ignorant comments, IF one is really interested in knowing the facts, go to www.ChurchesHelpingChurches.com, and then comment. Having seen Mark's sermon he gave to his congregation on Sun. (which is available on the CHC site, last I checked under the Blog tab), as well as seeing my own pastor this Sun., I would not wish anyone to have witnessed what they and their film crew witnessed. Those images and smells will last a lifetime.

halito: you clearly know nothing about Pastor Mark; and from your comments I would question your love of Jesus, commitment to his teachings - and really if you are a Christian at all. Instead of throwing stones at Pastor Mark; go to www.marshillchurch.org and listen to the sermons; use the masses of free resources and read your Bible, see what God as to say on the matter. While you are at this go to the Churches Helping Churches site and read that verse - then think about what Pastor Mark is doing. I am appalled at someone who says "I am a Christian" would come on here and criticise in the manner you have. BTW: the above is said because "I love you, I care about you, and I want the best for you". And I am not affiliated in anyway to Pastor Mark, Mars Hill Church, Churches Helping Churches and in fact don't live in Seattle - although I would love to.

You Christians drive me crazy... "Listen to the sermon" you say... These people need tangible help, not missionaries trying to gain converts... Money should be donated to causes that will work to improve the palpable, physical conditions in Haiti, not to help save their souls... It is just like the "help" the church offers to combat the AIDS epidemic in Africa, money that could be spent on research being spent on spreading the gospel and eliminating AIDS through abstinence education... Your patronizing attitudes towards less fortunate people under the guise of "acting Christian" are both disgusting and shameful... Why can't you just help people without trying to convert them?

bill: it is simple: what is the point of saving your life here today if you go on to spend an eternity separated from God! - or as you may call it in Hell. That is why when a Christian saves your life they want to introduce you to Jesus - so he can save you too!

What is the point of saving a life if its not going to be converted? Did you really just ask that? Thankfully not all Christians are compelled to convert everyone they meet. What happened to people simply helping people out of kindness and sheer compassion? This "fact finding" mission managed to land in Port Au Prince with 1000 lbs of food, while Doctors Without Borders and hundreds of other fully stocked aid and rescue planes are wait listed. Even John Travolta made it with 12,000 lbs of MREs (albeit with his Scientology crew in tow). It doesn't matter how you slice it, people cannot live on prayer alone, period.

If Haiti is able to build again, it needs all aspects of community. It needs schools, orphanages, govt, police, hospitals..etc. Especialy in 3rd world countries where the govt just isn't able to provide assistance, often churches and other groups are who provide the orphanges, the education, the hospitals... because often the only groups who want to go and live w/out all the comforts of home are the faith based orgs (though there are other good ones) Very soon, Haiti is going to be forgotten, and the people over there helping the Haitians will be desperate for more help. That is where churches are important. To support the churches that are already in Haiti that will be able to rebuild, then provide the people with food. Those people will help haiti rebuild. Who was on the ground running first in Haiti? was it the US military? Or was it a lot of faith based groups? Even the Red Cross orginaly was faith based org. Even if you don't go to church, you can't deny their importance.

Halito I can answer your questions.. First off Mark Driscoll is not like the majority of the typical mega church pastors. His giving is actually very generous and he does not lead an expensive lifestyle as you may think. He gives the majority of the profit from his books back to the church and even in times when his income decreases.. his giving increases. Also, his teachings on stewardship are incredible. He does not teach tithing as a law but understands for some a little is still a large sacrifice. God knows the heart.. The story of the Widows Mite for example.. if you know that one. I believe his reason for rebuking the people for not giving enough is understandable being that Seattle is one of the least generous cities. Be careful not to judge my friend. I know it's hard to give people the benefit of the doubt in this day in age.. but you should try it.

Driscoll not only went to Haiti will thousands of pounds of supply's, but he also is a pastor serving thousands of people around an area that has been known to be the "least churched:" in america. If he wants to be angry that people arent giving enough then let him! WE ARENT. This country has a struggling economy and many jobs have been lost, but if anyone thinks we have it as bad or worse than the people in Haiti you are in fact delusional. If you think we cant even spare ONE dollar withought it affecting our lives then you too are in fact delusional. The point is, one dollar helps, and not even that is coming in to the church so people may want to consider repenting considering we are walking around dreading our lives and being angry that people are mad that we arent giving? yeah.. that's my definition of ridiculous, reach in your pocket and pull out that dollar u were wanting to spend on a cheeseburger at McDonalds and be a bigger person.

kevinsharp, How about if you cancel your internet connection and send the money you'll save directly to the church. Until you do so, you're the pot calling the kettle black.

Well personally, I think we need people of mature attitude talking about this subject, and If you are going to twist things around then theres no need in discussing. I never said lets drop everything and give all to haiti, I said we can CUT BACK and help improve things in our church to remain a LIVING church, as well as help Haitians slowly recover from devastation and rebuild necessary churches
