SEATTLE -- A radio journalist from Chicago found himself stranded in Seattle after Canadian authorities deported him. And Martin Macias says he believes it's because he happens to be an anti-Olympic activist.

"Their main concern was, 'What kind of protest do you know about that's going to be causing to the game themselves?'" he said.

Macias, 20, and a friend flew into Vancouver from Chicago on Saturday, he said, to attend a conference by the Olympic Resistance Network.  The group attempts to highlight social issues, including aspects of poverty and environmentalism, that they believe the Olympic games ignores.

Macias said his friend was allowed entry, but after he identified himself as a radio journalist, security officers pulled him aside and questioned him for 2 to 3 hours, he said.

He said after they found a phone number for the conference scrawled on a piece of paper in his luggage, they asked him to admit what he knew "...that could have informed them about this protest that could possibly have caused destruction in Vancouver somehow, or stop the games, or do something to the Olympics," Macias said.

Macias said he was forced to pay for a plane to Seattle, and has been staying in a hotel.

"Never been here before, didn't know where I was going to stay, what I was going to eat," he said.

Macias himself is an a known anti-Olympic activist who actively protested the city of Chicago's bid for the Summer Olympics.  But he denies knowing anything about planned violence at the games, and said he was planning to leave two days before the games even begin.

As the opening ceremonies near, more and more anti-Olympic protestors are taking to the streets of Vancouver, including some who've implied plans to disrupt the games.

Macias said he plans to formally protest his deportation on the grounds that officers used unethical tactics when questioning him.

Canadian border officials say for privacy reasons they will not discuss specific cases. But they say their policies on admission into the country are not changing during the upcoming Winter Olympics.

"All persons seeking entry or re-entry into Canada must report to the CBSA and may be subject to a more in-depth examination," read a statement by the Canadian Border Services Agency. "Admissibility of all travellers seeking to enter or re-enter Canada is considered on a case-by-case basis on the specific facts presented by the applicant in each case at the time of entry."

"Several factors are used in determining admissibility into Canada, including; involvement in criminal activity, in human rights violations, in organized crime, security, health or financial reasons.

"Averagejoe" nailed the key issues. Good riddance.to Martin Macias and those in groups like the Olympic Resistance Network who have nothing better to do that find fault with an amazing international sports competition that brings together the very finest in athletes from around the world. Many Olympic protesters have promised a WTO style event .. one that turned violent in Seatle a decade ago. Canada doesn't need to make the same mistake Seattle did. If Macias really cared about making the world a better place he would be involved with organizations whose focus is doing just that. Red Cross, World Concern .. you name it .. there are hundreds of large and small national, social and religious organizations working to help the poor, sick and oppressed.. The Olympics serves a wonderful purpose and was never intended to get involved in promoting social issues. Lastly, does anyone other than "upzmtn" really believe Iran has a free press?

Maybe..just maybe..what brings this to a threshold of significance is the fact that a member of the press was denied entry to a democratic country based on their viewpoints - esp. considering he was going to leave two days before the games even began. This nearly happened last month to Amy Goodman - a radio host - when she was heading to Ontario to talk at a public library about a book she wrote. Despite the fact that she was on the wrong side of the country and had no intention of speaking about the Olympics at all, she was detained and harshly interrogated for hours. Freedom of the press - despite where you lie on the political continuum - is the last hope for transparency in this increasingly corporate-controlled world. Iran does it. Should we? Should Canada? Terrorists and violent threats aside, you should not be restricted access to any country based on your opinions alone. And yes - there are better and more productive way to call attention to poverty and environmental concerns

When will people understand that every event that takes place in this world does not need to address every social or economic ill of the day? this is the olympics. a lot of people have been training very hard to gain entry into this event, may be the result of a life long dream. Now people want to interfere with the games because they do not address poverty, or gay marriage, or aids, or some other point of contention of some group from outside the olympic event? I am glad they deported this person, and made him pay for his own ticket. now go home!

I don't understand what Canada has to answer for. Last time I checked there was not a guaranteed right to enter the country. In theory they could deny you entry because they don't like the way you cut your hair.

Way to go Canada!! It is true there is poverty and environmental issues, but those aren't the only things going on in the world Look how many people have opened their wallets to Haiti. Let's celebrate bringing people from all over the world together in the spirit of friendly competition for 2 weeks at the Olympics. The last thing we need is for another group of people to spew their hate. I say stay home, young man, and change your frame of reference from victimization to celebration.

With all the focus on depressing poverty and environmental issues, the olympics serves as a nice respite... I hope this guys slithers back to his hole sooner rather than later...

I am having a hard time getting too choked up about this guy. "...didn't know where I was going to stay, what I was going to eat" he says. Yeah...I am sure it is because we don't have FOOD or LODGING in Seattle! Besides, he is just a publicity hound anyway. Being denied admission so he can complain about it is probably his dream come true. Imagine how boring the Olympics would be if the games were focused on "aspects of poverty and environmentalism" instead of international goodwill and athletic excellence.
